Title: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: mr_scholes on June 04, 2009, 07:58:47 pm
since 21 hours have past, i'm sure by know everyone on the planet have taken the test

so how was it
By the way what was the mass and the fraction on the energy question
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: sweetie on June 04, 2009, 08:08:53 pm
i got sumthin like 323kg
and i mess read da fraction que but i got 0.77% so i found % instead of fraction
newayz i think its ok

wa was ur first ans???????
i rote micrometer guage!!!!!!!
and i scribbled so much in a que , but ans was clear
is scribbling ok??????

ya i said micrometer too

i wrote 1750kg or something like that, and the fracton was 1/16

I dont know mine was Physics 31
and that was easy !!!!!!!!
what about physics 32

my physics was the second variant or 32 .... it went good...the paper was pure new,but liked it

Post by: crypsAnity on June 04, 2009, 08:37:36 pm
I did PHY Variant 32 as well!! anyhowss.. i dont know what most of people were talking about the paper having hidden meanings.. i found it darn straightforward .. excluding I forgot to revise Linear Expanisvity! chek out.. I thought those stuff were basics .. lol .. technically therefore couldn't answer that steel aluminium thing although I did state which was stronger .. but my explanation made no sense or whatseover.. as far I believe .. I guess I lost 7 marks defintely but i bet there are more stuff which i am not aware of .. sighs .. i really do regret for not studying properly. it was an easy scoring paper..

for da diode i wrote C

hw did u get mass as 1750kg?????

i got 1/8 for the fraction thing....and wat did you get for pressure question when they asked wat the pressure would be if the area was doubled? ....i halved the pressure....and the diode i said D  ::)
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: q8ig on June 04, 2009, 10:53:09 pm
I halved the pressure too ! ;p
dnu how i thought about it though :P ..
i thought the paper was easy ..
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: emi on June 04, 2009, 11:13:01 pm
in liquid surface area doesnt affect the pressure , only depth and density do.

hmmm since 8 hours are left i dono if other mods will allow discussion now, but i also think every one must have done their exams by now arround the world .

Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: ghostt on June 04, 2009, 11:16:21 pm
the paper was easy i got the fraction as 1/8 and the pressure remained same as area has no effect on pressure!!and i wanted to ask about the frist question i wrote g.m tube act. almost everyone wrote gm in my school as the answer how can u say that we had to measure wid a scale???????
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: Wahab09 on June 04, 2009, 11:21:47 pm
The pressure question was first 540 000
then b)i) was 54000
then c was 3750
then the fraction was 1/8

the electricity question had 0 in the first 2 values and 0.33 A and 0.9 resistance..

the angle of refraction
i wrote was 21 or 22 but im sure its wrong as i forgot to divide refractive index by 1..
and the speed was 2 * 10^8
resultant force = 5600N

and the diode was A..

and i also wrote micrometer..

and choose steel instead of concrete + aluminium..

the force was also 84 N..
and the pressure 0.0 something
wat else is there??

im second varient By the way..

wahab i m having the same answers az urzz!!!!!!xcept the refraction part got it az 57 or 58 i dont remember!!!can someone plz tell me the answer for the first question and y iz it unwise to close the circuit in parallel ??? ???

Post by: Wahab09 on June 04, 2009, 11:30:45 pm
57 was 100% correct my friend!!
im the incorrect one.

i said i forgot to divide refractive index by 1 like u did :-[
but oh well.. 1 mark

hey wahab can u tell me how did u calculate the mass ? like what method you used ?

and one of my friend mentioned the way of using thread and winding the  plastic and such for Q 1 ,, will it be correct ?

what was the answer for the last last Question  it had one line with 2 mars

Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: Wahab09 on June 04, 2009, 11:54:53 pm
emi..
you just rearrange the equation to hald of everything u had in a but without the mass.. and make the mass the subject..
it becomes 3750
it was just 1 mark or 2 u dnt need the working for it..

and many people did the winding thing and i dont think its correct cuz they sed they wanted specifically the measurment of only one of the peices..
u cudve used calipers or a micro meter

the last question i wrote from negative to positive (aint sure)

i did evrythng as u guys dd and in da first q i used da alpha emitter and i said 2 put an alpha emitter and put infront of it a paper and behind it a detector and then i said depending on da no of alpha rays able to penetrate da paper and detected by da detector the thickness can b determined if too many rays pass dat means its very thin if nothing passed that means its very thick....is it right? did any1 do it like me ?

Why would you divide refractive index by one?? I did
R.I = sin i/sin r ...
1.49 = sin 35 / sin r
and my answer was 23. something
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!

i wrote the fraction 4/5.......... :(
i didnt take 10% for the 2nd day............o crap!! :-\

Well that's kinda like the thing. I did that first too. and then i realised that the ray that's coming out of the medium A is bending AWAY from the normal  :-\
So I decided to switch the fraction. I think you can use 1/refractive index, OR sin r/sin i... i remembered that cuz i saw it in the mark scheme of some old paper
yes and i think it was 57 or something like that...  :D

The paper was actually QUITE challenging...   :(

I think i must have lost 10 marks on the question of the kinetic energy. i did loss of potential energy is gain of kinetic energy so instead of using a half mv squared, i used mgh!! someone help am i completely wrong?? i also wrote A for the diode question. Question 1 first variant paper.. who knows the answer..

hey guys i had a few doubts and was hoping any1 could answer them about the phy p3 yesterday-
1)micrometer screw gauge working explanation
2)the milk question especially the last part
3)fraction of the energy question
4)the road forces question-direction of the force.
5)the last question beta particle deflection and the second part.
thx guys.Take care all.

because they only require 6v so closing the circuit in parallel would mean that they both get 12V which is way more than what they ned and they'll burst.
can anyone tell me what they got for the damp cloth question...i said that the cloth uses the heat from the milk to evaporate the water on it...and i didnt really explain the evaporation part as there was already a question about it...

I dont think micrometer is right!
Micrometer is used to measure the diameter of something not the thickness of 6 plastic plates!!!

they wanted to know the thickness of ONE peice of paper not 6..

By the way micrometer is absolutly fine...u just had to mention divide by 10 and my teacher said u couldve used a ruler!!! the formality of the question just confused us all

yeah im sure vernier calliper would be alright..they don't *have to* follow the mark scheme if they think an answer is correct n deserves marks u get them (as given on the front of the mark scheme itself) ---sum1 i knw even wrote radiation...but im not rly sure if they'd award marks for that..

what did u guyz write for how that bottle of milk stays cool cuz it had 2 b strictly in terms of molecules! ???

i wasted a lot of time on that question because like a retard i forgot that the diagram is to scale... so i started doing cosine rule until i realised that i can measure with the ruler!
and after i discovered that, i forgot to multiply my answer by 5oo N!

The fraction question .. I got 1\2! I first wrote it as 1\8 but then I recognized that wind becomes slower when it is heavier.
But that makes sense if the speed is half less then the mass is then more which makes the output half less. [ Blowing slower , less output ]
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: omar777 on June 05, 2009, 12:53:22 pm
guys just by looking at the ray you can see it is bending away the from the normal... its impossible that the answer is in the '20s' it was 58 point something :)
and i think the critical angle was a bit more than 42 because when the incident ray was 42, the refracted ray was a bit less than 90... so i wrote 43 :-\

hey i wrote pressure on finger = force\ area which wre 48 over 0.003 or smth like tht and as for liquid it was Dgh which is 1000 X 10 X 3 i thnk...
Can anyone tell me about the turbine question...was the fraction 1\8??? :-\ did we need to use 25m i th ques?? :-\
And one thing...the brdge rectifying ques..was it C??
The Fraction was 1/8....but the rectifying one was A
i got the same, 1/8 and A...:D

I THINK IT WAS C

A" IS IMPOSSIBLE
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!

Even i thot it was C first but i changed my answer to A cuz even tho it DOES go from the left resistor to right, i think red to black right....it also lets current go from black to red! A was the only one that made sense!

anyway huever chose the wrong diagram but got the arrows for conventional current right still gets 2 marks ECF...the 1st part was only 1 mark so it shud b fine :)

guys just by looking at the ray you can see it is bending away the from the normal... its impossible that the answer is in the '20s' it was 58 point something :)
and i think the critical angle was a bit more than 42 because when the incident ray was 42, the refracted ray was a bit less than 90... so i wrote 43 :-\
same

thats exactly how it was, less speed, less mass...so 0.5mv2 would have a smaller m, and a smaller v, thus less output..

wat i did was first using the mass of the second air i found its kinetic energy then using that value i found the power output after which i found the fraction.

Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: Bani on June 05, 2009, 03:15:44 pm
hey guyss
to find the mass in the turbine question, i just used cross multiplication....they had given the mass in the question when the speed was12m/s so therefore:
12m/s     7500kg
6m/s         x

ihope this is right...
for the graph question (where u had to show the variation of CURRENT, what did u guys draw??? cuz in my notes the graph for OUTPUT VOLTAGE was only given,,,not CURRENT       ???
for the diode i chose B :(
for the milk question, I said that the kinetic energy ofthe milk molecules won't increase enough to allow any molecules to escape as gas, so  the coldness od the dampl cloth would prevent the K.E from increasing, thereby keeping the milk bottle cool......I had no other way of explaining in terms of the molecules

I chose Aluminium instead of Steel, because, if you noticed, the expansitivity of concrete and steel were the same, so if u chose steel, when you embed it in the concrete, it won't be able to expan/stretch anymore than the concrete, thereby less strength.....

For the direction of the resultant force, I wrote Right.... :( and for the part where we had 2 mention somethin thts a vector and is not a force, I wrote velocity...

For the first question, I wrote micrometer first, but then since I didn't know how it worked, I wrote a metre rule instead and then explained that first record the measurement with the rule, using a set square (for greater accuracy)for n number of palstic sheets (10 for example) and then divide by 10 to get the thickness for one palstic sheet...

I got 42 for critical angle and for the angle of refraction, I don't know what on earth u guys are talking about dividing by 1 :( ; our teacher never told us any such thing about the reversibility of light :( :( :( Im sad and in my class Im the best one in Physics :( and everyone said the paper was horrible, thanks to our Physics 'teacher' >:(  Can you imagine doing Electricity (LEDs, LDRs, thermistors, capacitors, transistors, FRHR, FLHR, effect of current, a.c motor, d.c motor, Logic gates, potential divide, variable resistors) in 3 lessons only, with our Physics 'teacher' NOT knowing the use to transistors in an LDR+pd circuit and her constant blabbering tht she needz to revise her Electricity facts and then explain to us!!! Dude! ur the teacher and we pay u to KNOW ur facts already nd then explain 2 us! >:(  :'( :'( :'(

Back to the questions....whatelse...mmmm ohhh yaaaa for the last last question, I said field is perpendicularly out of page and i have a feeling tht it is WRONG
 :'(

I really want 2 get A* :-[ :'( :( Inshallah
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: MR.BooMBastiC on June 05, 2009, 03:23:36 pm

THEY R NOTORIOUSLY ILLEGIBLE......

Bani,

I chose Aluminum as well because the metal with higher expansion is placed under the metal to reinforce it. For resultant force I wrote North-east HAHA...
I got C for diode... No idea how.. and I even forgot to tick the correct answers in the last page even though I knew them. I'm pretty sure that I screwed up on some questions.

I only slept four hours before the exam, I couldn't concentrate well.. As a matter of fact my brains were so spoiled that I couldn't calculate the speed of light in the medium, nor Critical angle.

Whenever there was a question with "State" ... I wrote for example... More than 47N LOL!

I really wanted an A* in physics, but I don't think that it's obtainable anymore.. because you'd need at least 90%, but you never know! the system this year changed a loooooot... thus an A*'s percentage has probably changed  ::)

Oh well, A* & A has the same credit when you apply to Universities :P

i think they wanted the angle of the resultant with reference to the road, as the downward force of 1 car is south...so u hav to write 30 degrees, or whatever u guyz got it may b a lil diff..

and thers no way it could be aluminum! cuz it expands more than concrete so it will cause the concrete to crack!
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!

i chooose aluminium as the metal, and for the diode, the answere is A, the last question, the electric fiel i wrote it should act downwards to cancel it out. for the direction of the force i wrote diagonal to the road!! i didn't know how else to express it. did any1 get the Piston question 1? Cause on my paper there was nothing like Gm or Micrometer???

That's why it's placed at the bottom of concrete? because its expansion is more... as I know the metal placed below should be the one that has higher expansion.

The pressure question was first 540 000
then b)i) was 54000
then c was 3750
then the fraction was 1/8

the electricity question had 0 in the first 2 values and 0.33 A and 0.9 resistance..

the angle of refraction
i wrote was 21 or 22 but im sure its wrong as i forgot to divide refractive index by 1..
and the speed was 2 * 10^8
resultant force = 5600N

and the diode was A..

and i also wrote micrometer..

and choose steel instead of concrete + aluminium..

the force was also 84 N..
and the pressure 0.0 something
wat else is there??

im second varient By the way..

hey guys for the water and damp cloth question, is it because water have higher thermal capacity than air so when its hot weather it will not heat up much keeping the milk cool?
for the diode thing in paper 32 i wrote a
but ppl i did a huge mistake in da kinetic energy thingy i wrote mv2 but i forgot to square da value so i got 45000 alll calculations i did were rytt but bcoz of da first value i got all othr values wrong n da last one i still got 1:2 bcoz u get 1.5 so will i loose complete ten marks ny idea how many marks can i get for da question

pls repllyy

since 21 hours have past, i'm sure by know everyone on the planet have taken the test

so how was it
By the way what was the mass and the fraction on the energy question

i got 1/8 for the fraction thing....and wat did you get for pressure question when they asked wat the pressure would be if the area was doubled? ....i halved the pressure....and the diode i said D  ::)

yeah i think i put D for the diode thing, but apparently it's wrong...idk!  :-\
oohh...for the pressure thing, they said the area was doubled, but the depth was the same yeah...so the pressure should be double too, i guess, odds are i may be wrong! :P
the fraction is 1/8 but i didnt get it... >:(

hey whch xpands mur ice or water?

I put water...because technically, when the ice is in the freezer (o-4c) it gets bigger, so when they are both melted..ice will be less water (becasue it only looked bigger) and water will stay the same... You get mah flow?

i did not get 1/8 i got 11/2 according to me wen the wind speed is half the mass displace will also be half so that brings it to a ratio of 1:2

OK!!!!!!!!

NOW POWER=WORKDONE/TIME TAKEN

SO WORKDONE=KE

HENCE 54000/1
CUZ TIME WAS 1 SECOND!!!!!!

SO ANS=54000W OK

they accept efficiency rule too  instead of power= energy\time ??? ??
for th fraction part , i calculated kinetic energy for half h wind speed and calculated output energy by muliplying by 10%
second answer\first one = 0.125 which is 1\8...
what fractions dd u get??

Erm, man the windmill question was a little depressing  :'(

Anyway, what I did was.. erm

It's hard to recollect  ::)

I guess there was a question before the one where we had to find the mass, where they asked us to find out the power... shwoing all your calculations
Using the efficiency percentage they gave as 10%, I calculated the Energy as 54,000 Joules.
THEN, the E=Pt P= E divided by T. 54000/1 = 54,000 W (watts)

Then, erm, I was really confused for the next one.
I thought about using the Energy formula itself like KE= 0.5 mv2
but then i thought.. if the velocity is halved, how would the mass increase  :-\ cuz technically if the velocity decreased, then the mass of air passing through the turbines should fall...
... So I just used a ratio and got an answer I can't seem to remember  ???

BUT I think I'm wrong. As they said earlier, probably a heavier mass would mean that speed has decreased  :-[
BUT I DID get the fraction as 1/8... These two answers were really difficult   >:(

most people got 1/8... i guess it the correct answer.. hopefully.. or maybe we all are wrong and examiners have something completely different to amaze us wen freeexampapers get the question paper and mark schemes lol ;D

why do you think that those wind mills (i can't remember the real name) are built in places with a lot of wind (with a high speed)? because, the faster the wind is, more air passes through the windmill... so, when the speed of wind is halved, than the mass of air is halved... so 1/8 is the correct answer!

I dont think it said it worked reverse or anything like tht.. it jst mentioned tht it shod go from red to black and its normal diode. They were very very trickly placed in diagrams.. I got D as answer.. many ppl put A and C.. no one did B so i guess B is definately wrong.. or possible we are all wrong and B is correct :P who knows.. lool.

the answer for the Diode is C. 2 diodes facing each other wouldn't make a current flow. C was from black to red, and D was from red to black. A and B would have no current because the whole point of the diode is to make the current flow one way, and if the two are facing each other then where the hell will the current flow? xD they say common sense is not common, i certainly agree. -.-

so I guess they also say that good teachers are not common, to which I certainly agree,-.- ;)

hey guys

You know, in all year 9, we had the worst teacher ever he started the year WITH ELECTRICITY!! HAHA IMAGINE AND WE WERE LIKE WTH IS HE TALKING ABOUT!! Looool

So this year a real expereienced IGCSE physics teacher starting teaching us, we started from the begging and it took us only 4months to finish the whoooole thing, thats by feb!!, then we did past papers like 6 years and everybody was just amazing at physics :)

I found the exam very simple and straight forward, most of it was general physics, no motors no generators etc, :)

Guy what did u get for the diode?? was it A??

Thanks

no it is steel, they have the same expansivity because aluminum expands more damaging the building and as for the diode yest the ANSWER IS A :D

well it is correct ... i asked my tution sir and he has the paper .... he said its A ... and besides its got to be A cause A gives the only direction for red ..... so basically its A
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!

r u sure its A like completely completely absolutely sure its A......
but if u put steell which has the same expansitivity as concrete, then wuts the point...its gna expand as much as steel....so it wont lock into the concrete....whereas aluminium will lock into concrete and besides concrete is much more stronger than aluminium so aluminium cant harm the buliding....

yeah we are sure

it doesn't go that way, the point is that when concrete has to expand, steel will expand by exactly the same amount per meter, so this means that there is no negative effect on the structure, but if aluminum was used then, if concrete was to expand by 1cm for example, then aluminum will expand by 2 cm for example, meaning that it will pop out of the concrete block and haha maybe into the above floor!! get it!! :P

If the concrete doesnt allow the exapnsion of alumnium, the aluminium will possibly shatter. And besides, the metal doesnt have to "lock into place" or anything. Its just reinforces the concrete. The way our bones reinforce our legs. If our bones expand more than our legs when heated, they would soon pop out through our hip.

i am just doing all the pastpapers over again....from 2003 till now...it wud be good if u do them over agian and try to get all 40s and if u get mistakes..then write em on the front page of the ppr also write the correct METHOD and answer and also write the number of the question....and then before the exam revise the pprs...writing all tht down will make it easier to revise cuz u wont have to look thre the whole ppr and u will noe ur mistake from the first glance...good luck...i am just looking forward to writing on tht OMR sheet...hehe.... ;D

guys cie dont expect the candidates to be engineers and wknow what is used to reinforce concrete... i think its just common sense....
they mentioned that the expansion of steel is the same as concrete, and aluminium isnt, so if u use aluminium it would expand at a different rate than concrete, and it would cause problemes to the structure.
and plus... its known that steel is used to reinforce concrete :P  ;D

since 21 hours have past, i'm sure by know everyone on the planet have taken the test

so how was it
By the way what was the mass and the fraction on the energy question

i got 1/8 for the fraction thing....and wat did you get for pressure question when they asked wat the pressure would be if the area was doubled? ....i halved the pressure....and the diode i said D  ::)

yea so did i get the same answer. hope its right?

i did it like that. duno if its write or not =/

Erm, guys how are you preparing, like, COMPLETELY for Paper 1?... So far, I only practiced many papers and I know now that I have to sleep early on the exam night.  :P

can sum1 explain thermal capacity(high and low)
Title: Re: Physics Discussion HERE ONLY!
Post by: susman on June 10, 2009, 05:27:53 am
high thermal capacity means that
more amount of energy would be needed to change the temptertature of a body by 1degreed

for example
2 kg of aluminium has less thermal capacity than 2 kg of water...
aluminium loosoes and gains temperature faster than water..
thus the low thermal capacity
in this case water has high thermal capacity

IMHO it actually depepends on the mass
in the question
BEST OF LUCK everybody

thermal capacity can be different for 2 objects of the same material, but different masses. Its SPECIFIC heat capacity that has to be same for similar materials.

I got the Fraction 1/8..Cause u divide 1/2 the mass and the speed too..I'm pretty sure it correct but why the heck they gave us the diameter of the
thingy??the turbine or whatsoever? For the Diode I"M SURE 100% its A.I did the experiment in Sec3.

For the PD ACROSS S WHEN THE SWITCH IS Open is 0 volt and the same goes for the next question.

Pressure should not be halved for the swimming pool thing.

FOR THE MICROMETER, you should mention Datum line, ratchet and thimble..Well, that my opinion..

Wow Wahab09..You're good!

^ the pressure of water at that point remains unchanged as the density, height and g are the same=> pressure= d x h x g.......

Physics paper 1 was soooo easy!!!  ;D
I might even get full!!
Im amazed at some of the people's mistake. They kinda fell prey to CIE's tricks.
