Words and hearts should be handled with care
For words mis-spoken and hearts when broken are the hardest things to repair

All Day It Has Rained

All day it has rained, and we on the edge of the moors
Have sprawled in our bell-tents, moody and dull as boors,
Groundsheets and blankets spread on the muddy ground
And from the first grey wakening we have found
No refuge from the skirmishing fine rain
And the wind that made the canvas heave and flap
And the taut wet guy-ropes ravel out and snap.
All day the rain has glided, wave and mist and dream,
Drenching the gorse and heather, a gossamer stream
Too light to stir the acorns that suddenly
Snatched from their cups by the wild south-westerly
Pattered against the tent and our upturned dreaming faces.
And we stretched out, unbuttoning our braces,
Smoking a Woodbine, darning dirty socks,
Reading the Sunday papers - I saw a fox
And mentioned it in the note I scribbled home; -
And we talked of girls and dropping bombs on Rome,

And thought of the quiet dead and the loud celebrities
      Exhorting us to slaughter, and the herded refugees;

As of ourselves or those whom we
For years have loved, and will again
Tomorrow maybe love; but now it is the rain
Possesses us entirely, the twilight and the rain.

And I can remember nothing dearer or more to my heart
Than the children I watched in the woods on Saturday
Shaking down burning chestnuts for the schoolyard's merry play,
Or the shaggy patient dog who followed me
By Sheet and Steep and up the wooded scree
To the Shoulder o' Mutton where Edward Thomas brooded long
On death and beauty - till a bullet stopped his song.

by Alun Lewis

it is a poem about military life during the Second World War

i love this one...

Hello everyone, I'm new here!
The poetry here is so good!  :o ;D

*applauds everyone*

I feel so inspired by all the great work here.. ;) ;)
I love writing, though with AS levels, I barely get the time to brush my teeth now, let alone write  ::)...

But here's one I wrote a couple of months ago...it's about war  :P.

Please tell me what you all think!
*waits in nervous anticipation  :P*

A Single Red Poppy

“Hold on,” she says, grasping my hand,
The sound of gunfire—noticeably gone.
“Stay with us, be strong,” she pleads,
“It’s over, the war is won.”

“No more fighting, no more hurt, no more death.
No more facing enemies unknown.
Don’t leave me, Father and Brother are no more-
I cannot face this world alone.”

A single tear drips down her face
And lands on my cheek, dotted with mud.
I cough weakly and once again her hand comes down
To wipe away the bubbling blood.

With shaky fingers, I lift my hand to her face
And run it over the features I have long yearned to see.
It is too bad we will not be together much longer,
Too bad she must live on without me.

I tremble, knowing I’m running out of strength.
And bring my fingers to the pocket on my chest
And pull out a starkly vibrant red flower,
Slightly wrinkled, but still fresh.

“Remember me,” I whisper,
My voice quiet, clear and calm.
“Remember me,” I whisper,
And I place the poppy in her palm.

“Keep this always – as a token of my love.
Keep it, and keep me forever in your heart.
Don’t fear death, my love, it is but a word,
Nothing will do us apart.

I will wait for you in the heavens,
I will watch you always from above,
And one day we shall be reunited again…
And that one day I await, my love.”

I lie still, my life spirit draining away
Onto my uniform; now a blatant, sticky red.
Her hand is clasping mine and between us the poppy,
Barely visible against the soiled scarlet bed.

My fingers grow slack and my vision fades-
I pull in a final shuddering breath.
And all the time my eyes are trained on the single red poppy,
It’s poignancy and color haunting me, even in death.
