Many people have been asking about the new grade policy. In fact this is the most frequent qst that i'm coming across. I replied many pm's too but here is an example for those who still have confusions after reading my earlier topic on the new grade policy.
Assume there are 2 papers of subject X. P1 has 40 marks. And p2 has 60 marks. If in July CIE sets the minimum number of marks required for an A in p1 as 32/40 and for a B as 29/40. Likewise it sets A at 52/60 in P2 and B as 48/60 in P2. So, you need a minimum of this to achieve the required grade in each paper. Now, CIE will total your number of marks. One thing is for sure the minimum required to get A* will be set as many marks above the sum of the Grade A minimum as the grade B is below it. In this example:
for B: 29 + 48 = 77/100
FOR "A" 32 + 52 = 84/100.
Now CIE will subtract the minimum for a B from A.
Hence, 84-77 = 7 marks.
These will be added to the sum of A grade marks i.e. 84 + 7 = 91 marks. Therefore, 91/100 will be the minimum for an A*.
So, you can see it is not necessary to get a minimum in each paper. If you got say 31/40 in P1 it'll be given grade B according to our assumptions above. And if you got 60/60 in P2 you'll get an A in p2. But the total will be 31 + 60 = 91 marks. Hence, you've achieved the minimum for A* .
The minimum for A* that is 91/100 in our example will be mapped onto a percentage uniform mark of 90%.
The minimum for A in our example 84 will be mapped onto a percentage uniform mark of 80% .
Thats how it will work.

Thanks 4 the clarification!! lots of ppl hv been asking :)

ok thanks for that explanation, i have a question though. so i'm taking the entire CIE A level this year in one sitting, and I've already done P1 and M1, P1 i did really well on and will most probably get above 70/75, M1 i misread a question and have probably lost 7 marks :( can i still achieve an A* grade? i'm hoping the minimum grade for A in M1 will be less than 42-43!
-
Dont worry. u can still get an A* even if you get a B in M1. but try to increase ur chances by doing well in other components of maths. BEST OF LUCK
-
if u people hav any Questions regarding grading system, feel FREE to ask.........
-
this is for igcse too right???
if it is u jsut made me a happier man !
-
the cie dudes set the thresholds before the examination? like there is a set threshold for the phy p4 coming on the 28th?

hey buddy no thresholds are set afterwards.....after receiving all da entries.......dey analyze and calculate the percentile according to how each student has done as a whole.......and then set the grade thresholds accordingly...........
so if there are gr8er no. of stupid ppl appearin for xam threshold can be lower :p ;)
;D ;D ;D
-
NO ima_shah, Before 2010, grade threshholds were set after checking all the papers by the examiner but now this is nt the case. now they will set the thresholds before the checking of papers and then grade each student accordingly so better watch out!............ and this is inclusive of IGCSE also

WHAT. SO THERE'S NO CURVE???
-
are you sure?
-
wait, how do you know all of this? D:
-
I dont think there's curves in edexcel..my teacher said they set the thresholds before marking!! so it's tough in edexcel!!!
-
my friends live in england whom i contacted. they asked their teachers about it and their teachers askd for an explanation from CIE. here i m with all that explanation. u can also see the CIE website.......
-
But this doesn't make sense .. how will they decide who'll get an A if very few candidates scored above 85% as an example?
-
Thaaaanx....Now Its Clear XD
-
will der be a curve thingie this year?
alotta ppl i know keep telling mee that there wont be a curve this year..like the threshold
-
THATS the game my boy. due to their decreasing reputation and increasing competition, they hav done this. but mind you they r experienced examiners, obviously they wont set a threshold to which only a few students can reach. being examiners by decades, they hav a crsytal clear idea of how to set a threshold........ GOT IT

is there going to be a curve? y/n ::)
-
WTH !! no gradient accord 2 others !!!!! thats horrible in a way !!! :(
i wish this is not true
-
yes this is horrible. u hav to work hard to get A

you're right about the curves but really edexcel exams are much easier than CIE

hey ketone, could you pls help me on how to calculate the marks for Math as i'm taking P1,P3,P4 AND P6...i want to get at least a C..plsssssssssss...

yeah, i'm curious too.
-
u guys there will dfntly be a curve, the only difference is that we will get a percentage along with our grades..the percentage will only appear on our school certificates and not on our official CIE result ..ok?
-
how are u so sure about the curve ???
-
can u please tell me what is the threshold level for physics, chemistry, biology for may 2010 on CIE.I need it immediately........
-
they set the thresholds after the paper...
for A, its normally about 80%..
-
no one can be sure about the threshold
cuz it depends on how all other candidates have performed !
but on an avg u can say 85% n abv is an A grade in AS level
n 4 ig and A2 80-90%= A
90-100% =B
-
no dude...
even for AS, its 80% and above..
dont freak me out man!
-
i dont know if its from this yr
but previous yrs it was 85%
sorry 4 freaking u out :P m myself m :P

Hi can someone help me out here.
Im still very unsure bout the A* grading for the CIE A-Levels Board. I have read this thread over and over again and realized that the 80% overall for A-Levels and 90% overall for A2 merits you an A* but does this really apply to CIE A-Levels as well? Im very sure it applies to Edexcel and a few other A-Levels but to CIE im still doubtful as I cant find any solid link or evidence that its true. For CIE, does anyone know if I have to get 90%+ for my AS to get an A* or only require an average of 80% in AS but 90% in A2?
*Note, im not very familiar with the terms of C1,C2,C3,C4 as i think this is from Edexcel. In CIE its P1 & S1 for AS and P3 & S2 for A2(pls do correct me if im wrong). Because of the differences, im very unclear with the CIE A* grading policy.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!
-
i am here taking CIE AS level so i only refer to that
getting an A * grade in A2 means the total avg % being about 90
for the A level grades all papers of AS and A2 are combine in the weight age of individual subjects to give a total A level grade . hence ur total should be above 90% 4 an A*
-
I know this is just for CIE but to all those Edexcel people commenting...
Curves are set after an exam - after they see how people have done worldwide, so don't worry too much.
Also to get an A*...an A grade (240/300) must be attained in AS and a 270/300 in A2.
If you score a 290/300 for instance in AS, congratulations. Of course universities in UK will look at module marks but be like 'w00t' but those extra 50 marks wont help you to attain an A*.
Hope this helped Edexcel kids :)

thats totally wrong where did u get this from ???
for an A* in ALs CIE u have to get a grade A in both A2 and AS not an average of 90%
so if u got in each (AS and A2) 80% or above which is considered an A u get the A* in the whole AL ;) :D
-
As for now, CIE has not officially set the criteria to achieve for an A*.
But from other sources such as The Student Room Forum, it is evident that you do not need to score 90% for all your A2 units to get A*.
The confusion mainly arises from "UMS" and "raw marks".
UMS stands for Uniform Modular Score, which is the score converted from raw marks (the actual marks each paper contains) based on published threshold. You can find every details here http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=649874
So far we've been arguing the 80% to get A and 90% to get A*... actually all these are UMS. So, you need not to score 90% out of total available raw marks in a subject to get A*. This depends on the thresholds published. You'll find more information in the website above.
Hope that clears doubts!

oh then my bad i wrote what my friends told me :(
-
to achieve an A* in any subject, u hav to get an A IN ALL COMPONENTS OF THAT SUBJECT. thats full and final............................

i think ur a little wrong there, cuz i got AAC in my bio igcse and i still got an A* and the also for chem AAB and i still got an A*

igcse isn't like a level though. >__>

The 90% thing are SCALED score.. Not Scores like 90% in every paper ( e.g. 36/40 and so ).
If some of u guys have taken SAT, you will understand this thing.
Usually Sciences for A2 is only 70% for A.
-
I m not only talking abt GCSE not IGCSE........ ok
-
As i said in one of my topics earlier that the threshold required for grade A* will be set as many marks above grade A threshold as the grade B threshold is below the grade A threshold. If statistical evidence suggests, they would lower it but never raise it! The grade A* threshold will then be mapped on to a uniform mark of 90%.
Note: Only the statement of result will show the uniform percentage. And if a student achieves a uniform mark of 100% it will not be the same as getting full marks across all papers. Similarly, a Uniform mark of 90% does not indicate that the student actually achieved say 90% marks out of 300. They will obviously depend on the thresholds, which in the present case will be decided in July.
Get ur ideas clear abt it. and any Questions?
-
one more thing
A* wont be awarded at AS level. it will be given in A2 .........
-
one more thing
A* wont be awarded at AS level. it will be given in A2 .........
A* is not awarded for A2 the highest grade in A2 is an A
then when the AL is graded as a whole then there will be an A*
-
ofcourse stupid joseph, overall performance is taken into consideration in A2

sorry

wutz wrong with ketone u don't curse
and go check ur data next time A2 highest grade is A
so when they calculate the A* in AL u must get A in both AS and A2 and not A* in A2
they consider A2 in AL as u said but still highest grade for A2 alone is A

totally right !!! cie site shows this !!! :D :D

honestly ppl!
baseline: 80% overall = A
90% overall = A*
now comprehend this in whatever way u want to.

Guys if u want to know more about the system in depth
you guys will have to learn how the uniform mark scale works
only then will u understand how grades are awarded..
and By the way there was misconception that there would be no curve
firstly there will be a curve because if there aint a curve then it will be too economically and statistically difficult for the examiners to give a percentage on ur statement of results
secondly the thresholds are given of freeexampapers so check em out
there is also a link on fb about the cie where ppl have asked questions similarly...
the grading system hasnt changed for A levels and Cambridge IGCSE but ppl in A levels can get A* now.
I take igcse By the way...
-
oh thanks destructor. u cleared ny misconceptions. thank you

Hey...i gave accelerated maths this year, june 2010...i calculated my score to be 71 in p1, 42 in s1 , 46 in m1 but i messed up in p3...i think i'll get 55...is it possible that i get an overall A*
-
But on ask.cie.org.uk, they still mention that the threshold will still be available. If the paper harder than last year, they threshold will be lower, otherwise it will be higher.

ofcourse u will get an A* if u get the expected marks mentioned by u. dont care abt m1 and s1. ur scores in p1 and p3 should be high to get A*
