Edexcel unit 5

What is the difference between adaptation and habituation?

Thx in advance

Habituation is an extremely simple form of learning, in which an animal, after a period of exposure to a stimulus, stops responding. The most interesting thing about habituation is that it can occur at different levels in the nervous system. Sensory systems may stop, after a while, sending signals to the brain in response to a continuously present or often-repeated stimulus (Cohen et al. 1997). Lack of continued response to strong odors is a common example of sensory habitation. Habituation to complex stimuli may occur at the level of the brain; the stimulus is still perceived, but the animal has simply "decided" to no longer pay attention (Rose and Rankin 2001).

Example:- "You are sitting quietly, reading a book. Suddenly, a tap on the window startles you. Your heart rate rises momentarily and you glance at the window to see if someone is there. But you see that the wind has strengthened and the branch of a tree has touched the glass. As your interest returns to the book, repeated taps of the branch on the window evoke progressively smaller reactions, until they hardly intrude into your reading at all."

Excel-erated Learning, page 38:

"I sometimes hear habituation and adaptation used interchangeably. Adaptation is quite different because it does not involve learning. Adaptation refers to the physical process of tiring. Perceiving a stimulus requires that the animal uses its senses. The sensory neurons can tire and when they do, they actually stop working."

Example - Overworked police dogs losing sense of smell
Madrid's police dogs need time off after train bombing
MADRID - Madrid’s police dogs and their trainers have been so overworked since
the March 11 Madrid train bombings that the dogs are losing their
ability to detect bombs, a police union official said.

Thank Amelia,

What's the purpose of increasing heart rate after the stretch receptor send impulses to cardiovascular centre in respond to the increase volume of blood that enter the heart during exercise?

Edexcel unit 5

haven't done unit 5 yet so I am not sure if the answer will make sense to you.

Anyway, Here:
Habituation is a longterm physical change whereby an organism becomes unresponsive to an unthreatening stimulus. What happens is the calcium channels close meaning that the vesicles containing neurotransmitters cannot travel to the presynaptic membrane

Adaptation is when your receptors are being exposed to a steady and unnecessary stimulus over a period of time, your brain tends to "ignore" this and free the CNS from irrelevant information.
Example: when you wake up after sleeping infront of the T.V because an explosion happened or so, till then your brain ignored all the other talks chit-chats etc.

Hope it helps

A larger amount of blood is pumped with each beat to replenish the muscles with Oxygen and nutrients during exercise, this increases heart rate(amount of beats per minute). Exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system. Increased sympathetic output to the heart causes an increase in heart rate and stroke volume and that increases the Cardiac Output.

Under the specification point, it says-

Analyse and interpret data on the possible significance for health of blood cholesterol levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDLs) and low-density lipoprotein (LDLs). Describe the evidence for a causal relationship between blood cholesterol levels ( total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol ) and CVD.

I dont understand what does it wants us to know about??? Can any one of u tel me wat does it wants and explain me in details.  I didnt get wat does it mean by?? Please help me.

As best as I can understand, they're asking you about HDL's and LDL's and their relationship. which is basically that LDL's are bad and HDL's good...LDL's cause atheroma's and whatnot, HDL's transport LDL's to the liver(??) for breakdown.... something like that...
The second sentence is asking you to describe evidence to support a causal link i.e. how taking in/eating those HDL's and LDL's is related to CVD's. I can't really do any better than that, so forgive me if you still don't understand.

I hope you are not over with the exam. Will tell ya, they are easy.

By definition, hypothesis is "A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.", simply meaning that it's 'guess' you make about a particular experiment. You will further investigate (or carry the experiment) to prove if your hypothesis is true or false.

In Null hypothesis; you basically have to basically deny the association between two things, while an Alternative Hypothesis does state an association.

Check this -  http://www.null-hypothesis.co.uk/science//item/what_is_a_null_hypothesis for example.

PS - I dont think in ALevel, you require to know about the null and alternative hypothesis - just get the idea  ;)
