Q1: A homeowner is concerned about several large cracks running across the back wall of his house. They seem to be getting worse, and he thinks they are cause by the tree roots affecting the foundations. He has done some digging and suspects that his neighbor's tree is the culprit. The neighbor denies this, insisting that one the tree in the homeowner's own garden is responsible. How could the neighbor establish who is right?
Q2: Basmati rice is more expensive than other types of rice. The name basmati can only be used for certain variation of long grain rice grown in India and Pakistan. The rice association says that basmati rice must not contain more than 7% non-basmati rice but cheaper rice varieties are often mixed with basmati and sold as basmati. In tests on 382 UK basmati sample, 46% were found to contain more than 7% non-basmati rice; some samples were more than 60% non-basmati.
DNA profiling is used to determine if samples exceed the 7% limit. Suggest how DNA profiling can be used to check the quality if rice samples.
Thank you.
