hello all! =)
can some1 define Ka,pKa and pH for me :S im confused!!
Hi Assi, it has been a long time since we last heard from you.
pHpH is a measure of the concentration of H+ ions in aqueous solutions. It is calculated as shown :
pH = - log [H+]
Acid dissociation constant KaThe acid dissociation constant K
a is applicable to weak acids
only.
It is a measure of the strength of an acid. The bigger the value of K
a, the stronger is the acid. It is calculated as shown :
Example : CH
3CO
2H <=> CH
3CO
2- + H
+Hence K
a of ethanoic acid is =>
Ka = [CH
3CO
2-][H
+] / [CH
3CO
2H]
pKapK
a is a measure of the strength of an acid. The smaller the value of pK
a, the stronger the acid. It is calculated as shown :
pKa = - log Ka
Now, there is also K
b which is the base dissociation constant. It's similar to K
a except that it's for bases.
Hope it helps
