Thanks you guys! ;)
Id also like to know which elements react with cold water, water, steam and at what state. thanks again
-
i'm a bit not busy so i'll tell uwhat i memorized a few hours ago :P
cold water, water, steam
potassium,calcium,sodium,lithium all react with cold water vigorously making metal hydroxide
as for magenisum and metals under in the reactivity till carbon (ex: Zn,Al) , they all react with steam
as for water , no answer ::) , i wanna kno too ???
um as for the states , i didn't get u :-[
tips .. solve as much past papers as u can ....i ised to be terrified when i hear pp1 chem ...but now i'm like nah it's easy ;)

Fluorine
Chlorine
Bromine

u kno in the reactivity series the reactivity decreases down the group , so what happens is that ...Br is more reactive than I hence it'll displace it
as for chlorine it's more reactive than Br hence it'll displace it
got it? ::)

Theres this question in oct/nov 04 Q11, that says:
' A substance X is heated in an evaporating basin until there is no further change.
mass of basin
before heating 25.52g
after heating 26.63g
What could X be?
A copper
B copper (II) carbonate
C Copper (II) oxide
D Hydrated copper (II) sulphate'
ms says the answer is A, i dunt get it, i thought substances decrease in size or breakdown when heated :-\

Heating copper will cause it to OXIDISE - ITS MASS INCREASES

y doesnt copper react directly wid hcl to form copper chloride?

y doesnt copper react directly wid hcl to form copper chloride?
cuz copper is below hydrogen in the reactivity series ...it can't displace Hydrogen ..therefore ..no reaction ;)

i know im asking too much, im just panicking real hard :-[
so can anyone please tell me the products when:
Acid + Metal -->
Acid + Base -->
Acid + Metal Carbonate -->
How metal nitrates breakdown
and how the boiling and melting points change down group of group VII
Really sorry for the trouble :(

as we go down the group of halogen , m.p. and b.p. is increasin
metals of group 1 , well they give u following:
metal nitrate ( exceot for Li)--> metal nitrite + oxygen
metals for group two (and Li) and transition metals give u :
metal nitrate --> metal oxide + nitrogen gas + oxygen
(remeber group TWO means TWO gases ...group ONE means ONE gas given off ;) )
don't panic ...relax and have faith and god and have sonfidence in urself mate ;)

oooo......nuther question!!!
how do you know which gases are soluble or insoluble??
and my textbuk said dat Phosphorus pentoxide is soluble, while on anuder page it said dat most oxides/hydroxides r insoluble xcept foh
ammonium,sodium,potassium n calcium!! how wud we be able to tell whether stuff like this is soluble or not?

i have an important question :D
if lead is above hydrogen in the reactivity series then why is lead formed instead of hydrogen in the electrolysis of aqueous lead nitrate ????
-
I thought group 2 means group II in the periodic table and same for group I ???
Also could u give me the products of:
Acid + Base -->
Acid + Metal -->
Acid + Metal carbonate -->
Sorry for all the trouble :(

i have an important question :D
if lead is above hydrogen in the reactivity series then why is lead formed instead of hydrogen in the electrolysis of aqueous lead nitrate ????
By the way when u have any AQ solutions then what u do is that u gotta kno the followin rules
1. when the metal is Cu or Ag then they go to the Cathode but if other metals hence they form metal hydroxide
2.if the gas is a halogen then it goes to the Anode ...if not a halogen then OH- goes to the Anode givin out Oxygen .i'll give u the formula , wait
4OH- --> 2H2O +O2+4e-
-
your right....group I is 1, group II is 2, and so on
acid + base = salt + water
acid + metal = salt + hydrogen
acid + carbonate = salt + carbon dioxide + water
-
Thanks dude ;)
-
welcome :)
-
is there anything for Acid + Salt ?
-
Most salts are ionic, formed by strong base and acid, and are almost indestructible, so I guess nothing will happen
On the other hand, acid MAY dissolve part some insoluble salt (like carbonates)
However, what happen mostly depend on the acid that make the salt. If it is weak (like H2CO3), the salt are dissolve by the stronger acid (carbonates make bubbles when dropped into HCl, for example).
Salt from strong acid doesn't react, even when put into an another strong acid (like BaSO4 doesn't dissolve in water)

i need help in 0620/01/M/J/07 question 31..plzz explain ...
Thanks in advance...
-
i hve a few Qs......
1) Are metal oxides more reactive dan metals demselves......eg copper oxide???
2)some1 in this forum said da 2 anions NO3 is below OH in reactivity.....but in da (chem)guide it has been mentiond above OH??
3)can some1 answer this Q again plzzz....
Q...If lead is above hydrogen in the reactivity series then why is lead formed instead of hydrogen in the electrolysis of aqueous lead nitrate ???
-
u hv to know the solubility guide
its given here https://studentforums.biz/index.php/topic,7663.0.html
thanks foh your efforts but the solubility guide and the guides in textbuks dont actually talk bout non-metals!!!!they only refer to
metals!!!!plus they dont talk bout oxides either so much!!!i tried lukin foh answers on google but didnt find nythin nd sum solubility tables were kinda biased!!!
oh!! is ther a way of knowing which gases are heavy? ....or do we jus stik to wat's given in textbuk?
-

You mean the density? ???
Cuz i thought were only meant to know how the density differs from one group and another, and down the group.
-

not exactlyy!!!i meant like when you make and then collect the gas thru downward or upward delivery or over water.
eg. chlorine is lighter than oxygen evn though it has a higher proton and mass number!!
so...my question is dat how wud we noe this for oder gases?? or do we just have to stik to the gases mentioned in the textbuk??

That is density ;)
if the gas is less dense than air, you can use upward delievery to collect it, cuz itll be above air, its lighter=less dense.
But if a gas id more dense than air then you use downward delivery cuz the gas will not float above air itll sink to the bottom of the cylinder.
Same thing for water. ;)
Get it now?

hi one question. is bitumen a fuel?
Its residue, they use it to make roads, not as a fuel ;)
If u did chemistry paper 1 today, then i know what you mean ;)

So.. did anyone do the exam today?
How was it? ;)
I thought it was easy ;D

hello weaam. ;D
sorry...haha.. act, i also cant remember everything but i do know
they gave a list of information about water
: chlorine kills bacteria in water
: water in house hold contains mineral ions.
cant remember the 3rd one.but im sure its correct!
but wat im not sure about is the forth one.
: filtration is used to remove soluble impurities from water.
is the last one right?

ya .. u kno y ...cuz read this carefully : filtration is used to remove soluble mpurities from water. .................meaning we need distillation not filtration

i think the third one was: Water is used in industry for cooling :P
But i picked 1,2,3 cuz 4 is just dumb :P
you cant filter something thats dissolved! xD

How can it be the last one? :O
The last one had filteration TWICE.
I dont think that was it :-\

and also did you get 5 As in the begining of the test, for qs 6,7,8,9,10?
I got all As for those! :P

i act changed the answer at the last minute. and i was confused by the filtering to!
but...you filter it once to remove the excess copper. then you concentrate it. you filter it again to dry it between folds of filter paper and to obtain the crystal.
:D

maybe it was straight A's...but i really cant remember though! ;)
wat did you do for the methane ques?

Yea, it would be cool to look at the exam, hahaha
For the methane one, i picked the one that said 'it is a liquid fraction of petroleum' or something like that..
Even though, only one seemed right to me, the last one, the rest were all wrong xP
or were they...
Hahaha

I dont think that was it :-\
We can eliminate "heating the crystals" at the very beginning as the crystal would then be removed of any water molecules, which is not what we wanted. This leaves us with D, and I must admit that the filtering twice bit is somewhat confusing.
