Title: IGCSE Maths doubt(paper 4)
Post by: @d!_†oX!© on October 30, 2009, 07:31:53 am
ok guys, here i come with yet another unusual question.... ;D ;D
seriously i haven't seen this anywhere else :o :o
(x:15-2x?7)?(x:5x-2>10-x)

i though maybe ":" sign implies ratio which is actually division
so by taking division(ex, x/(15-2x) i tried to solve it...but this is where i could reach ann dunno how to go about it now :-[ :-[
(x?7)?(5x²-47x+20>0)

PLEASE HELP GUYS!!!!!!

hey i dunno y but some characters are not coming
lke the intersection character and the greater than or equal to character
anyways i'll tell u now:
(x:15-2x>=7)intersection(x:5x-2>10-x)

which past paper is this?

and yea..

(x:15-2x>=7)intersection(x:5x-2>10-x)

is the above the only q?
Title: Re: IGCSE Maths doubt(paper 4)
Post by: Ghost Of Highbury on October 30, 2009, 07:42:51 am
ok..heres it..

that ":" means "such that"...its dere in the book..read it.

k..so..
solve the inequalitites in both the sides to get

(15-2x>=7) n (5x-2>10-x)

solve them

(x<= 4) n (x>2)

now the left hand side values can be... 4,3,2,1,0 and so on

right hand side.. 3, 4, 5 and so on

the intersection is (3,4)

dude it means x is a set such that 15-x>7
and another set is such that x 5x-2>10-x

hope you get it!!

dts the only question!!!
no link to any other part,....
By the way its from june 1988..
yeah i know its too old...but dude...dts a pretty confusing question!!

lol..wats the confusing thing

solve the inequalitites ..thats it..

and find the intersection..

is the answer (3,4)
Title: Re: IGCSE Maths doubt(paper 4)
Post by: @d!_†oX!© on October 30, 2009, 07:45:53 am
ohhhh!!!!
oh yeah i get it now
but i didnt take it as "such as"
because the whole thing was written inside the brackets....so thought maybe its part of the inequality
dude...they gotta make this thing clear in the question!!!

solve both the inequalities separately...

                     15 - 2x >= 7                              5x-2 > 10 - x
                     15 >= 7 +2x                               6x -2 >10
                     8 >= 2x                                     6x >12
                     4 >= x                                       x > 2

now put these inequalities together

                  4  >=  x   >  2

this is the answer.

solve both the inequalities separately...

                     15 - 2x >= 7                              5x-2 > 10 - x
                     15 >= 7 +2x                               6x -2 >10
                     8 >= 2x                                     6x >12
                     4 >= x                                       x > 2

now put these inequalities together

                  4  >=  x   >  2

this is the answer.

the intersection is asked..

so it wud be.. 3,4

By the way..whose b'day party?!?!?

ryt, the intersection can be anything between  4 >= x > 2
it can be 3.2 also,  it is not mention whether the numbers is a whole numbers ???

i don't i think the answer should be written in this way...

7 The position vectors of points A and B, relative to an origin O, are 2i + 4j and 6i + 10j respectively.
The position vector of C, relative to O, is ki + 25j, where k is a positive constant.
(i) Find the value of k for which the length of BC is 25 units. [3]
(ii) Find the value of k for which ABC is a straight line. [3]

l\just the last part!!!

rest is easy!!!

ok..

first. --> AB=OB - OA = 4i + 6j

--> BC = OC - OB = (k-6)i + 15j

BC = x(AB)

(k-6)i + 15j = 4xi + 6xj

k-6 = 4x
6x = 15

x = 2.5

--

k-6 = 4*2.5 = 10

therefore --> k =16

@nid - show how did u use the distance formula?

-----
BC = k-6)i + 15j

sqrt((k-6)^2 + 15^2) = 25

therefore

(k-6)2 = 252 - 152 = 400

k-6= sqrt(400) = 20

hence, k = 26

That's the first part! Distance formula is used in 2nd part...
Title: Re: IGCSE Maths doubt(paper 4)
Post by: Alpha on November 01, 2009, 02:38:28 pm
Hey... The Distance Formula is derived from the Pythagoras' Theorem... That's not difficult to understand.

Use the graphical method...

Draw any inclined line on a Cartesian Plane.

I have attached a file to this post. Refer to it.

Let A (x, y) and B(x1, y1).

To find the distance between A and B, i.e, the bold black inclined line, you will need to find the length of the two red dotted lines I have named x and y.

Using Pythagoras' Theorem,

Square of longest side = Sum of squares of the two smallest sides.

Send square to the other side...

>>> Longest side=  Sq. root of the sum.

And to find the two smallest sides:

        x = 3 - 0 [y1 - y]

        y = 3 - 0 [x1 - x]

Note that the triangle formed is a right-angled one.

And now substituting the values for x and y, you will come back to the distance formula given.

Actually, this formula is just another way of using the Pythagoras' Theorem. A diagram would help. But it takes time to draw... Maybe by Tuesday, I'll post the diagram here... It would be easy to understand then.

This formula is used both in Maths and Add Maths.

Good Luck!

Gradient formula should be used for the second 1....but for the first one i think we need to used distance formula....they did something else.....

so aadi....could u use the distance formula FOR the first one ??

@alpha-i know he asked for the 2nd one ans I know the stuff.....I was asking abt the first part cuz I used the distance formula for the first one and got a different answer
