Chemistry question
« on: June 06, 2010, 05:00:03 pm »
Please open O/N 06 paper 3 question 5c.). Why is water produced in this reaction? Would anybody be so kind enough to explain this point?

Thanks!

Look carefully at the products and the reactants.

CO(NH2)2

Notice how Urea (above) seems to be very familiar to a combo of NH3 (ammonia) and CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) ??

But notice that the one Hydrogen from Ammonia and the One Oxygen from CO2 are missing ?

Where did they go ? Thus, you can make an informed guess that a water molecule was formed in this reaction.

I believe this reaction was part of the syllabus for 2006 but not for us.

It was formerly included under "Air and water - NPK fertilisers", it has since been scraped and all we need to know for the examination would be that adding ammonia to nitric acid and sulphuric acid would produce ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate respectively.
Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Scientia Est Potentia - thats my signature (look below this post).

Knowledge Itself is power; its Latin.

I believe that knowledge conquers all. If you know all EVERYTHING is achievable.

One of the greatest gifts is knowledge; I wish my peers shared that belief too.....
