MissDE:

Hello..
I have a very big problem, and really need your help, IB students!

I'm now doing my IGCSE and was in two minds...
I didn't know wether to do A-level or IB..

Finally...I decided to do IB...

The problem is that I don't understand anything
I have a lot of questions about everything....!

First,,

How do u choose your subjects?
Can I choose more than 6 subjects?

I have no idea about what to do in the future (university)
so... I don't know what subjects to choose..

...........and I need some 'Extended essays' and 'Theory of knowledge' examples..

My other question is about languages..
For language A1. can I do something other than English
Arabic, for instance?

and for language2,,,
Im thinking about learning a new language
can I do a language that Im very beginner in???

these are my questions at the moment but I will probably have more...

Waiting for your answers....

Hi, im also an IGCSE student but ive already been to some IB meetings and im also thinking about doing IB.

-How do u choose your subjects?
-Can I choose more than 6 subjects?

You usually choose subjects that you are willing to study in university and would be needed in ur work, if for instance u are wanting to study engineering it would be best to do maths and physics.

Nope u cant choose more than 6 subjects but you can choose to do 3 SL(standard lvl) or 3 HL(higher lvl) {must be 3-3}, but to do higher level u really have to be good at it  :P (This also depends on what u are willing to study later on)

- ...........and I need some 'Extended essays' and 'Theory of knowledge' examples..

Extended essays are basically essays up to 4000 words which can be in anything really,.. Theory of Knowledge is tests that show ur knowledge abilities inside and outside the classroom about different stuff.

-My other question is about languages..
For language A1. can I do something other than English
Arabic, for instance?

-and for language2,,,
Im thinking about learning a new language
can I do a language that Im very beginner in???

Yep u must do another language and u can choose it at SL or HL, i choose arabic cuz im arab and it would be easy, but if u want u can also choose others like French or Spanish.

Yes there is something called Spanish ab initio which is spanish for begginners at SL only.

Note that u need atleast 5 C grades to enter IB but if ur struggling i wouldnt recommend IB cuz u will have a very hard time.

Hope that helped :P

Well just to clarify:

1) All subjects must be in different 'areas of knowledge' i.e. group subjects. Its all complicated and theres many loopholes so don't worry too much. But basicly, you have to do a science, a humanities subject, english, another language and maths.

2) when learning a new language you get put into 'ab initio' which is something I strongly recommend against, because its pretty much a crash course through the language. You basicly go through the entire IGCSE syllabus in 2 terms.

3) EE is 4000 words on anything you choose. Do it on something you're interested in and you'll see the word limit whizz by.
ToK is incredibly weird and incredibly stupid. I call it "T-O-Gay" because its just a pile of nonsense. Sure it teaches you how to think open-mindedly, but oh god I can't for the life of me get good marks on it. Its mainly the people with more abstract minds basicly.

4) IB is tough for engineering. Higher Physics, Higher Chemistry and Higher maths (ESPECIALLY higher maths) are the toughest High School subjects IN THE WORLD, with HL maths going to second year university maths (art and DT are, on the other hand, most demanding. Their tests are easy for anyone who has an interest in art, but the courseworks take a sh*t load of time). But on the other hand, the IB is practically worshiped by the everywhere in the world besides the USA (because they think their SATs are soo good...pffft.) A score of 38 can get you to anywhere besides oxbridge, and they generally want about 41/42. In fact my friends are offered 38-40.
