All Mumbaikars/Indians !!! I need your help for Geography !!
« on: April 06, 2010, 04:02:51 pm »
There is this question in Paper 1 geography that keeps coming up VERY FREQUENTLY !!

It is a 7 mark case study question. Here it is:

For a named urban area, describe the impacts of its growth on the environment

Basically its asking how the growth of a named city has impacted the natural environment. I have done some research but cant come up with anything substantial for 7 marks.

Now some people (Nid 404 I am talking to you !!) who live in Mumbai/Delhi should have some info on how a recent expansion of their city has affected the NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

Please post it here with DATES !! Just Bullet points will do I am prepared to elaborate/research more.

In the markscheme this is what they say :

Uses named example (e.g. Delhi).

Comprehensive and accurate statements which describe impacts of growth on natural
environment, with some place specific reference.

(e.g. pollution of river Yamuma by sewage from residential areas, air pollution from
factories/exhausts, deforestation when land cleared for building housing areas at Shahdrara
etc.)

actually i stay in Ahmadabad but i know about how these mega cities effect the natural environment.
firstly the major thing is the pollution which takes because of the growth of the industrial sector all their waste is thrown in the rivers or any water bodies near to their factories.
The gas released from these go in the air again effecting the surroundings.
For the uptake of these industries many animal's natural habitat is snatched away as all the tress and all is cut off.
Secondly the garbage collected from everywhere is thrown and burnt at one place releasing a lot of carbon dioxide.
there are a lot more but after even nid has given i guess these a re enough
