Try XUbuntu, a light, compact version of ubuntu, offering higher speed and performance than ubuntu. It is much better if performance is your preference.

XUbuntu requires 1.3 bare minimum HDD space. ubuntu requires 4GB minimum.

lol im a kind of good computer user (the things which i know, i know them extremely well, and things i dont know (I DONT KNOW ANything about them) so i need to learn)

and i cant put in much time learning..
i have college  :-[ :-X

which is more user friendly??
hmm, im thinking of only running C++ and MATLAB in Xubuntu :D

Xubuntu = xubuntu    (xu bun tu  :D :P )

Lol, take it easy! :D . I myself dont know much. I dont know C++. Only Visual basic .net 2008. And I have never  heard of MATLAB. ::)

XUbuntu will be compact and therefore, less user friendly than Ubuntu. But it is the best choice if you want to get much higher performance out of your PC. Since you are expert in computer thingies, less user friendly shouldn't be much of a problem.
