SGVaibhav:
I have XP right now and i have not formatted since long time and my hard disk is kind of loaded heavily..
Specs
2.4 core 2 duo
2gb ram
xfx 9400 gt nvidia
etc etc...

my pc lags (as i have not formatted since long time and my hard disk is kind of loaded heavily..)(some sectors might be corrupted too)
i have to run applications such as MATLAB, and they are very laggy.

so i have 2 options

1) remove hard-disk load and format pc....   (edit: and put XP back again)
2) put ubuntu..
i want to put ubuntu...
but i have 2 probs...
     a) i dont know how to use     (is it easy?)
     b) compatibility..
i will need to use and run these drivers/softwares

* Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition
* MATLAB 7.0.4
* Nvidia xfx 9400 gt drivers
* motherboard drivers (gigabyte g31m-s2c)
* cd-rom drivers (lg dvd writer) and i might need nero
* msn ;P
* microsoft office
* HP printer drivers    HP PSC 1410there r some other small small applications, but that dont matter much
actually i choose ubuntu, because its better (so applications might run faster on my pc)
so what should i do??
give me some good technical advice, because i want a faster pc

I think you can install it over the internet and have it install as a dual boot pc. I would do that.

SGVaibhav:
hmm that is a good idea....

what size would ubuntu take when installed?? (2gb or what ??)
and after putting ubuntu, i can run heavy applications such as MATLAB only on ubuntu... (would that help??)

so i can format completely...
put XP (and take care of my hard disk space)
and put ubuntu to run heavy applications...

how would this be???

Ubuntu is not recommended for you.

Try XUbuntu, a light, compact version of ubuntu, offering higher speed and performance than ubuntu. It is much better if performance is your preference.

XUbuntu requires 1.3 bare minimum HDD space. ubuntu requires 4GB minimum.
