Help me with OS
« on: March 03, 2010, 02:33:10 pm »
I have XP right now and i have not formatted since long time and my hard disk is kind of loaded heavily..
Specs
2.4 core 2 duo
2gb ram
xfx 9400 gt nvidia
etc etc...

my pc lags (as i have not formatted since long time and my hard disk is kind of loaded heavily..)(some sectors might be corrupted too)
i have to run applications such as MATLAB, and they are very laggy.

so i have 2 options

1) remove hard-disk load and format pc....   (edit: and put XP back again)
2) put ubuntu..
i want to put ubuntu...
but i have 2 probs...
     a) i dont know how to use     (is it easy?)
     b) compatibility..
i will need to use and run these drivers/softwares
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition
  • MATLAB 7.0.4
  • Nvidia xfx 9400 gt drivers
  • motherboard drivers (gigabyte g31m-s2c)
  • cd-rom drivers (lg dvd writer) and i might need nero
  • msn ;P
  • microsoft office
  • HP printer drivers    HP PSC 1410
there r some other small small applications, but that dont matter much
actually i choose ubuntu, because its better (so applications might run faster on my pc)
so what should i do??
give me some good technical advice, because i want a faster pc

I think you can install it over the internet and have it install as a dual boot pc. I would do that.

hmm that is a good idea....

what size would ubuntu take when installed?? (2gb or what ??)
and after putting ubuntu, i can run heavy applications such as MATLAB only on ubuntu... (would that help??)

so i can format completely...
put XP (and take care of my hard disk space)
and put ubuntu to run heavy applications...

how would this be???

Ubuntu is not recommended for you.

Try XUbuntu, a light, compact version of ubuntu, offering higher speed and performance than ubuntu. It is much better if performance is your preference.

XUbuntu requires 1.3 bare minimum HDD space. ubuntu requires 4GB minimum.

Lol, take it easy! :D . I myself dont know much. I dont know C++. Only Visual basic .net 2008. And I have never  heard of MATLAB. ::)

XUbuntu will be compact and therefore, less user friendly than Ubuntu. But it is the best choice if you want to get much higher performance out of your PC. Since you are expert in computer thingies, less user friendly shouldn't be much of a problem.

any idea what is a RPM based system??

i found out, that we can run it wihout installing it
i will try fedora later
now im trying x-ubuntu

1) i want to know tell me what is a rpm based system.
2) im download x-ubuntu, latest version, i read that u can run it without install it, (dual boot), but im kind of confused in that that thing (if anyone has tried, then tell me, if no1 has, then i will read instructions {which i dont prefer :P} )

ok clear all my previous questions
NO QUESTIONS

i resolved them...
if anyone is confused to choose his OS, i found 2 sites which can suggest.
http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
http://polishlinux.org/choose/quiz/

Then if anyone wants to read a review about a OS, he can do it on
http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

And finally, to compare 2 OS's together
http://polishlinux.org/choose/comparison/

I am confused in which one to choose

Linux Mint   (Least chance)
Ubuntu       (im not convinced with it, but i still have a feeling i will put this)
Kubuntu     (Moderate)
OpenSuSE   (Highest after ubuntu - it has really good graphics and installation options)
