AS physics practical question(s)
« on: November 02, 2009, 05:29:46 pm »
uh, i posted this in the physics practical thread but i'm worried no one's gonna notice it before tomorrow sooo i'm just gonna post it as a topic (is that allowed? yes? no? whatever?)

right, quick question.
in one of the past papers, a ruler was suspended from strings, and one of the questions was to explain how you ensured that the ruler was horizontal.
i checked the examiner report, this is what it said:

"Most candidates stated that they would measure the distance of the rule from the bench top at
each end of the rule, and that the values would be the same if the rule was horizontal. This was
accepted for one mark. The more able candidates went on to give further detail, usually involving
the set square, to gain a second mark.
"

could someone explain what that last part means? the set square?  ???

A set square is 2 rulers at right angles.

i hpe this cld help
n nyw if u want to ensure a ruler is horizontal

Ef it. I'd post a picture of the experiment if I was on my pc.

Stupid phone :(

hah, get on from your PC?

but for the experiment i got that from, the ruler was held up by a string on one side and a string connected to a spring on the other side. the spring wasn't the pivot, i don't think..
i just skimmed through it though, so i don't quite know what we were supposed to do :P

Yeah that's the experiment I think. What year is it? We need to hang a mass or something

it's a newton-meter though, not a spring* .. my bad.
