A plane flies from an airport A to an airport B. The position vector of B relative to A is (1200i + 240j) km,
where i is a unit vector due east and j is a unit vector due north. Because of the constant wind which is
blowing, the flight takes 4 hours. The velocity in still air of the plane is (250i + 160j) kmh–1. Find the
speed of the wind and the bearing of the direction from which the wind is blowing.

this quesiotion has stuck me up!!!

help!!
ans is 112(app.)
at 333o acc. to ms

to find the speed = 1200i + 240j/4 = 300i+60j

250i  + xi + 160j + yj = 300i + 160j

xi = 50i

yj = -100j

refer to the diagram

angle XON = 90 - XOZ

XOZ = tan-1 2 = 63.4

therefore XON = 26.6

the bearing wud be the reflex angle i.e 360-26.6 = 333.4

no need to explain everything!

u already have one equation for OQ which u found out in ii

now..u know that OQ = OA + AQ

substitute the value for AQ in this eq.

now, u have 2 values for OQ in the form of a,b, lamda and u

compare the co-efficients of a and b to find the value of those 2 constants

i) OA + AP = OP
   AP = 1/3 b -a
  OA + AB = OB
  AB = b - a
  AM = 1/2 b - 1/2 a
  OA + AM = OM
  OM = a + 1/2 b - 1/2 a
  OM = 1/2 a + 1/2 b

ii)THEREFORE, OQ = (i dunno how to put dt symbol here[M TAKING IT AS y])(1/2a + 1/2b)

iii)AQ = (another symbol[M TAKING IT AS x])(1/3b - a)

iv)OA + AQ = OQ
   a + x/3 b - xa = y/2a + y/2 b

dude even m confused wat to do next????

dude!...didnt u read wat i just said

COMPARE THE CO-EFFICIENTS!!

FIRST REARRANGE

a(1-x) + x/3 b = y/2 a + y/2 b

now

1-x = y/2

y = 2-2x
--
bx/3 = by/2

x/3 = y/2

2x = 3y

2x = 6-6x
8x = 6

x = 3/4

substitute to find the value of y/ i am bored~
