Butter is rich in both saturate fat and cholesterol while margarine is made from vegetable fat with no dietary cholesterol, so margarine is a more preferable choice.

The calories from both butter and margarine is usually the same or have 10-20 calories of differences. What you've to look for is the type of fat they contain (for a healthy heart and overall health). Saturated fat and cholesterol while margarines contain vegetable oil, low in saturated fat and no cholesterol. (Even here, it's recommended to go for the liquid margarines rather then the solid stick ones because of trans-fatty acids  ::))

P.S - Saturated fat are the 'bad' fats  ::) and nutrition aint easy  :P
