Grade threshold different for every country?
« on: June 06, 2009, 07:38:52 am »
I read it in some other topic, it is. Is that true? if it is, than the grade boundaries for A on the IGCSE site doesnt apply to us living in the middle east, does it? Would really appreciate help in this matter, as I am starting to panic.

i noe that grade boundary for A, C, E,  are set for worldwide. n top in each country for each subject gets a certificate... im not sure but i believe its not for every country but like business paper 11 and 12 are there rite, so there will be different boundaries for each, and half of the world does p11 n hald does p12

Yea, but after having looked at the threshold , the boundaries for both the papers are same :S.

i dont think its different for every country. when you look at a markscheme for example, and you see the grade boundaries, do they say

A 63 for middle east?
A 65 for east asia?

nope, they put you 1 number for A, 1 number for C and one number for E. so i think the grade boundaries are the same worldwide, and you get that certificate i think , by getting one of the 10 highest marks, not just in your country. imagine your country had only one centre for IGs, so your just going to be competing against your centre? doesnt make sense...

they have a certain minium number of entries... n if they r met in the country, then in that subject in that country, the top guy will get a cert... for eg. in malaysia onli 3-5 skools do igcses... but still in june session ppl get top in country cert (not in nov session since not enough entries)

http://www.acsnz.org.nz/Cayley.pdf

above link shows how they grade it (it is a complicated process) n one thing that caught my eye is that- they usualli remark papers that are just below the boundary mark like if A is 90% and somone got 89%, thy probabli will rremark that paper...

So I guess it not done by individual countries after all. They take average for each country, eg'85/100 A in UAE, 30/100 A in america (:P) , etc.. And than calculate the average. Did I get that right?

There is a centre number written on your Paper man, and there is also the region number, which is written in barcodes, so obviously they know where you are from.

Am glad now, its just kind of hard to imagine in subjects such as Business and accounts 65 is an A, when for our year 10 exam and mocks, it was 85.
