Suggest an explanation why Butan-1-ol cannot form long polymer molecules but ethane-1,2-diol can.

very hard

Look
ethane-1,2-diol can has two -OH
while Butan-1-ol has only one -OH
when polymerization occurs, for Butan-1-ol, only one -OH is replaced so it cannot continue in a long polymer
where as in ethane-1,2-diol, two -OH are replaced so it can continue in a long polymer
basically the ethane-1,2-diol will form the similar monomer to polyethene
I'll post a picture in a minute... for explanation
Hope that helps
