Thanks...is it necessary dat v count frm the rite...if not then above is my doubt...
my actual doubt..
for example if we have to write the isomers of pentanol:
how will we name this one:
OH
! ! ! !
H-C-C-C-C-H
! ! ! !
-C-

look here the OH is either on 2nd and the alkyl group(methyl) is on 3rd.....or OH is on 3rd and the alkyl grp on 2nd.......how to name this???
god i hate this soooo much!!!!

there is a problem with the rep system, so at times it goes low automatically.
We will try to bring it to +ve by doing +rep like how i did now.

It doesnt matter which one you choose, or whether u count the first carbon from the right or left, but what does matter is that u count from the same direction for all the questions concerning the hydrocarbon. For example if you count from the left, then for every question that concerns the same hydrocarbon you should count from the left. What im saying is u cant change directions.
For ur actual doubt. In the isomer, a brach with 1 carbon and 3 hydrogens is sticking out. Thats methyl.
So its 3-Methylbutan-2-ol, because the methyl branches out of the 3rd carbon (counting from the left.) The general formula for alkyls like methyl, ethyl, is Cn H2n+1
