McDonald’s Worker Spits in Tea: How Gross is Fast Food?
By Sarah B. Weir, Yahoo! blogger | Healthy Living – 21 hours ago
Police in South Carolina say that a McDonald's worker spit in two customers' cups of iced tea after they returned them because they weren't sweet enough. A video shows the employee,19-year-old Marvin Washington Jr., leaning over the open cups before giving them back. The fast food chain patrons claim they discovered phlegm in the drinks when they removed their tops. He was arrested Wednesday and charged with malicious tampering with food.

Eating out can be an exercise in suspended disbelief. Wide eyed, we assume the food is fresh and wholesome and that workers have followed the "employees must wash hands" decree posted in the bathroom. Nevertheless, the McDonald's incident is so sickening because it actually bears out the urban legend that a disdainful waiter can and will contaminate your food if you tick him off.

Kitchen Confidential
Chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain's bestseller, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, exposed the grungy side of the culinary world over a decade ago. Not only is the book a rollicking memoir about coming of age in the 1970s and 80s, it's a veritable primer for how not to get food poisoning on date night. Bourdain rudely threw open the kitchen doors and exposed restaurants' dirty little tricks such as filtering cigarette ash out of used butter to make a sauce and serving old beef to the customers who ordered it well done.
Chicken scandals

There are many more recent examples of restaurants serving contaminated food and having unsanitary kitchens, especially by fast food joints. Most recently, a lawsuit by the former manager of a Kentucky Friend Chicken franchise in Oregon alleges the owner fired other employees for refusing to serve chicken that had turned green and passed its expiration date. According to the lawsuit, he resigned because he "couldn't stand serving rotten chicken to families anymore."

The website kfcmademesick.com chronicles a not-so-finger-lickin'-good list of other health code violations associated with the fried chicken franchise. They include rodent infestations, salmonella contamination, and foreign objects such as bandages and c**k roaches showing up in cooked food.

Fast food dangers

Not to single out one business, an undercover NBC Dateline investigation revealed that 60% of restaurants in the nation's top 10 chains had received critical health code violations in the year-and-a-half prior to the report. Caroline Smith-Dewaal who works for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food safety watchdog group, explained, "A critical violation is something that happens in a restaurant that may result in the food becoming contaminated."

Some of the recurring problems at franchises such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendy's, and Burger King were rodent droppings, insects, food borne illnesses, debris and grime on counters and in prep areas, and poor employee sanitation. Given that about 25% of Americans eat fast food everyday, that's millions of opportunities to be exposed to something nasty, or worse, a pathogen that could make you sick.

The Huffington Post catalogs a revolting list of items reported to have been found in customers' fast food. Some of the gruesome highlights: maggots in Wendy's fries, saliva on a Whopper, a bloody band-aid in a Pizza Hut pizza crust, and a fried mouse in a basket of Popeye's chicken.

As for independent restaurants, Bourdain claims that kitchens are more sanitary than when he was working on the line. "Things are much better now—with fish markets, with the quality of food handling in general," he told WebMD. "There is a sense of pride and raised expectations in kitchens now that didn't exist when I started out." The availability of restaurant inspection reports online may also be pushing owners to clean up their acts.
Nevertheless, restaurant report cards have no control over the impulsive nature of human beings. Maybe it would be better just to sweeten that tea yourself.

Next time, before eating, just 'press' the food in between your fingers and watch magic: it produces oil just like honey goes down a beehive!

Before you get too old, it'd be a good idea to go on a raw diet. Just a matter of habit, anyway.

Oh come on, consider both +ves and -ves.

+ves: 1) No need to cook. 2) Readily prepared within minutes, ideal for working people 3) No need of wife or anybody else to prepare food for you, ideal for singles. Less hassle for families 4) Great to eat with your friends and relatives in a resturant. 5) Quick source of energy due to a high fat/oil content. 6) Tastes great! 7) Cheap compared to cooking for some items.

-ves: 1) Occasionally, there are reports such as spitting in food etc. 2) Some reports of serving rotten chicken.

Fast food ftw! 8) 8)

^ Add more positives.

Thanks to Junk food (and these foods do really live up to their name, Junk) Dietitians, Nutritionists, Physicians, Psychologists are never going to lack patients ( or their money); patients suffering from Obesity, Diabetes, Atherosclerosis, High blood pressure, Stroke, Depression, (occasional) food poisoning, and much more.

Yes, Junk food FTW  ::)

Regardless, you are taking it too negatively and generalizing. You are talking as if those problems (diabetes, atherosclerosis etc) only occur due to fast food. That is not the case. In a country like Bangladesh, many people suffer from such disease though most of them do not eat fast food regularly. What do you have to say about that? ::)

People suffer from malnutrition as a result of having a deficiency in nutrients. Fast foods do not come to lessen the problem—people suffer from bad nutrition because they eat fats and cholesterol and salt and sugar in excess. Vitamins and minerals are in scarcity in such foods. You need fats, yes. But you need the right fats which many fruits and veggies already do provide.

You have to walk 3 hours at 4 mph to burn the calories you eat in a McDonalds Big Mac. You overconsume calories even if you eat small portions of junk.

Junk is cumulative. It’s just like smoking cigarette and taking drugs. You feel the effects after in life at a time when regret is the easiest thing to do, and you become so dependent on it that you think it impossible to get rid of.

‘Gluttony’ (i.e. over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything) is placed by God in the seven deadly sins just after ‘lust’. Well predicted, with very good insight.
Aquinas listed six ways to commit gluttony:
•   Praepropere - eating too soon.
•   Laute - eating too expensively.
•   Nimis - eating too much.
•   Ardenter - eating too eagerly (burningly).
•   Studiose - eating too daintily (keenly).
•   Forente - eating wildly (boringly).

People, do your Maths well. When eating, it's not 'food' one should count. It's calories.

Relationships do not work out well when either of the spouses is fat. The tendency to cheat is greater.

Except for people with hormonal problems, fast food is what causes common skin problems that force its victims to live in rejection and despair.

Before, buses could carry 65 people at one go. Now, they can barely carry 40 and need to burn extra fuel to support the weight. The world is going to be overpopulated very soon. Now, with fatter people, imagine the burden on it.

Obesity is the number one killer in Britain; it will soon overtake smoking and become the number one killer in America too by 2019.
“According to the American Heart Association, 910,000 Americans die each year due to cardiovascular disease, that’s the death-toll equivalent to a 9/11 every 27 hours or a Hurricane Katrina every 17 hours.”

Fast food outlets do not use fresh ingredients to prepare foods because this will be too costly for them. Everything canned, processed, and preserved that you eat speeds up your ageing process. You look and become much older than the years you have lived with all the junk that you fill in. Perhaps this is also one reason why it’s called ‘fast’ food?

Don't assume 'defamation reports' are occasional. It's just that fast food makers are the most cunningly deceptive criminals out there.

Fast food outlets survive by exploiting the stupidity of people. You will sue a thief who steals your money. But you will overtly spend this money on junks that openly steal away from you, your youth, beauty, and the years of your life.

Taste is psychological and is a matter of habit nurtured by culture. A French will find Indian food too spicy just like an Indian will find French cuisine too bland.
Aggressive advertising has enabled major fast food producers in convincing people they taste good even though they're disgusting and dirty as hell.

Congratulations. 'Good taste' has successfully sugarcoated a time bomb in your body.
Fast foods are not for the world. They are for the tomb!

Read Case studies, even in countries like Bangladesh Fast food chain is rapidly growing. And even if it didn't, Bangladeshi's have more oil then real food in their plates, and they have extra large sweet tooth.

KFC ordered to pay $8.3 million to Australian girl

Fast food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken has been ordered to pay Aus$8 million (US$8.3 million) to an Australian girl who suffered severe brain damage and was paralysed after eating a Twister wrap.

Monika Samaan was seven when she suffered salmonella encephalopathy -- a brain injury linked to food poisoning that also left her with a blood infection and septic shock -- in October 2005.

Several other family members also fell ill and they claimed Samaan's injuries, which include severe cognitive, motor and speech impairment and spastic quadriplegia, were caused by a chicken Twister wrap from a Sydney KFC outlet.

The New South Wales Supreme Court ruled in the family's favour a week ago and on Friday ordered KFC to pay the girl Aus$8 million in damages plus legal costs.

In a statement, the family's lawyer George Vlahakis said they were relieved the battle was over.

"Monika's severe brain damage and severe disability has already exhausted the very limited resources of the family," he said.

"Monika is now a big girl and they are finding it increasingly difficult to lift her and to look after her basic needs as well as look after Monika's younger siblings.

"The compensation ordered is very much needed. KFC have to date been determined that Monika does not receive a cent."

Last week KFC indicated it will appeal the decision but is yet to do so.

During the trial, Justice Stephen Rothman said the chicken became contaminated "because of the failure of one or more employees of KFC" to follow proper preparation rules, which he described as "negligent".

Salmonella, is a gram-negative bacteria, that can cause severe infections and impairment. We refer it as the "boss of all bacteria's". The above, is just one of the cases, there are many more.

Thanks, Alf :)
