Kashmir quake - do Indians care?

By Jill McGivering
BBC News, Delhi

Two major aid agencies in India have told the BBC they have seen a significantly smaller initial response so far from the Indian public to the recent devastating earthquake in Kashmir.

Earthquake zone
The initial response to the recent earthquake has been small

They say the public response to the quake has been much smaller than to other recent disasters such as the tsunami last year and the Gujarat earthquake in 2001.

In the aftermath of the Asian tsunami and the Gujarat earthquake, there were widespread reports in India of an outpouring of public support.

It ranged from personal donations to volunteers heading for affected areas to give practical support.

Justify this..... :P

you've made a terrible mistake. The kashmir quake happened in Muzaffarabad, that is part of pakistan's Kashmir. and for ur information, during that earthquake, the border between the two countries was opened to allow food and relief to pass through.

the article does not say that kashmir wants to be an independant country or annex to pakistan. i agree many kashmiris are unhappy, but it is not because they are being mistreated, it is because they want to be freed from the extreme terrorist groups that are making their lives hell. the militants are the problem because they poison the minds of the young children against india.

ya sure
i heard it on the TV that a lot of indian armed agencies were controlling the drastic situation in Kashmir b4 the elections
the kashmiri politians declared a march
so all the known famous kashmiri muslim politicians were kept captive at homes 4 two or three or...something like that , days

"Authorities said at least 45 people were killed in the violence, including a senior separatist leader, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who was killed by Indian security forces."

it's an anti-election protest, not an election campaign. these people were trying to prevent the elections from taking place
