I think Yes , my answer might not be reasonable but it might as well help your sister.

I think it's because MOST children whom I know use the internet for games , some of them even have a Facebook account o.0 ...etc  , these children might unknowingly Play a game that has very bad ideas about it which kids are not supposed to be exposed to .

WRONG things  and rumors etc can spread as easily as the good things and hence it should be policed .

last but not least ; stalkers and hackers who bring nothing but HARM to this generation should be policed certainly .

I hope this helped.
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest(13:28)

It's the right place. ;)

Yes, because cybercrime is there. I mean, hacking, pirating, pornography, money swindling, drug/ human trafficking, information leakage, etc.

The virtual place is a world, just like the one we have in real--- full of the good and the bad. That is why it should be controlled.

I think it shouldn't. This world is full of bad things, hiding them from our young only puts off the inevitable.

They will always find ways to circumvent such controls.

Once you start policing the net, where does it stop ? What is considered bad and good anymore ?

What is the definition ? In shor, here isn't any clear cut one.

If you feel the need to protect yourself or your children from the 'evils' of the internet the by all means go ahead and buy one of hundreds of programs out their that block such sites.

Just dont impose your desires on me/everyone else.

If I want to play a game on the internet its up to me to decide whether or not its bad for me and whether I should/shouldnt play it. Not you.

The internet like Alpha said is like the real world.... are you gonna stop people gossiping in real life too ? And may I ask what so wrong about having a facebook account ? Besides the time wasting aspect....

Dont disagree with that last one..... but once again it doesnt call for major policing. In the UK they have a convicted child offenders list available to the public.

I think it all comes down to our own personal definitions of right and wrong. Yes, the internet does have a lot of negative influences ; porn, stalking, hacking, you name it. These are black and white areas...

but when we move to the gray where opinions differ, like Facebook for example, some people hate the concept whereas others live on it…in these gray areas wouldn’t policing bring about infringement of personal rights and freedom?

We are our own police. God gave us a sense of what’s right and what’s wrong, and as humans we should be able to follow that. And if you’re a parent, I think it’s just your duty to protect your child from harmful influences ( vast amount of software available for this). So no…NO INTERNET POLICING!!

Then, why do we have courts, armies and the police force in real life?

I would say censoring is a form of policing.

You have a point definitely, but policing the internet will bring about lot of questions with no answers? What's right? What's wrong? Who makes the decisions? Maybe policing of the black and white regions can be accepted (refer to my previous posts) but what about the gray?

P.S Alpha :P is my english better? LOL I'm too used to texting girl, n IMs...I'm making an effort here!! :P :D

Just like we determine the wrongs and the rights in reality.

And about the grey, like FB, if the sites cannot be policed, the activities and contents can.

P.S. Yeah, I recognized the SMS broken English. It's a wonderful attempt. Well done. :) +rep

Lets be honest here. Does Pornography hurt you or me ? No. It is a vile, disgusting thing, but if a person sits down and watches it he is causing no harm to me.

It may be morally wrong but constitutes no harm to me, so why should I care.

I agree you may want to protect your children/youngsters of the next generation. Then go out and buy a program that blocks such sites.

Once you begin policing the internet you encroach on the freedom of expression of an individual.

Take China for example. Do you know what happened after the Tienanmen Square riots ? Hundreds of students were publicly executed.

Till today, if you type in the word Tienanmen Square into Google in China you will see a blocked page.

Policing the internet may bring about certain benefits (I wont disagree with that) but its potential for misuse is far greater.

I agree...Information is an extremely powerful force...and trying to control that will bring many problems...

@Alpha I don't think we can equate the real world with the virtual world because whatever it is, you clicked!! What I mean to say is, we have huge control over our virtual activities on the net, be it privacy settings on Facebook, or Anti-Porn software for kids, and as such I think policing should be personal...

But, (lots of buts in this argument), I agree that some sort of, for need of a better word, "policing", is needed...(I'm thinking of porn, drugs, and abuse of kids) but we need to come up with a system that allows for personal freedom as well...which quite honestly, I dont see happening anytime soon! :(
