Here is my article on getting your wbsite to the top
Making a number 1 website
All our websites have pretty high search rankings and most of the work in getting those search rankings is just common sense. Your website has to have good content and be as original as possible, having material that no other website has, and frankly, doing it better.
It took me about three years to design astarmathsandphysics.com. For the first two years I thought I could rely entirely on optimizing my website for the search engines. The most important parts of this are
a)Having a good title. Compare these titles:
From my website
Private KS3/GCSE/IB/Degree/A Level Physics/Maths tuition in London
From fleet-tutors.co.uk, the largest UK tutoring agencyPrivate Tutors & Tuition - Fleet Tutors - Home tutoring, private tuition, home tuition for children, maths and english tutoring and private tutoring for students and adults in London and UK
Fleet's title is long. It is stuffed with keywords – bad for your search rankings.
It took 2 years to get my title right. Fleet are still working on theirs.
You need to apply the same principle to the description of your website. Keep it short and punchy.
Then I came to the conclusion while on holiday that content is king. I worked out how long it would take me to create a complete set of maths and physics notes for every major maths and physics qualification in the English speaking world. I worked out how fast I could work. Then I started. Search engine rankings from content are built up over time, but once you have them you are miles ahead of your competitors. It also has the advantage that I can charge premium rates for tuition because people can see the knowledge I have. They might even find the notes uxeful.
But even this is not enough. A website must undertake several upgrades a year to stay ahead. Each upgrade needs to be planned and bugs need to be ironed out.
Finally there are these simple tips.
Submit your website to the open directory project – dmoz.org. This a the most important directory of websites on the internet. Google has it own version of the directory. Acceptance into The Open Directory will mean a massive boost for your website.
Insert a link to you website into your signature or profile of every forum you are a member of.
Design your website to have lots of attractive internal links. This will lower you bounce rate so that people click on links within your website and don't see one page and go to some other website.
Have a blog on your website, and be a little bit rude to the world. Update it regularly.
After 3 years of work my website is on the front page of google for maybe two thirds of terms that people type when they go looking for a maths tutor and I and getting over 300 hits a day.
