In the first scenario you will EVENTUALLY get a 2-hydroxy carboxylic compound. Think in terms of nucleophilic adittion of a CN- ion and hence you should be able to determine the structure.The second scenario is straight forward oxidation of an aldehyde to a carboxylic acid.
