But it's conductivity is still higher than Mercury. Mercury it is if he's talking about the thermal conductivity.

why do u say mercury is the poorest?

both of ya are debating for the poorest heat conductor.

I am asking electrical conductor??? ???

Experimentally it has been found that it's conductivity is lowest. The reason behind this all its electrons fill up it's s,p,d,f orbitals and resists electrons from being removed. It has the tendency to behave as a noble gas.

This sounds fair enough for me. Though being in Group 4 it should have 4 electrons in its outermost shell and i doubt it will be as stable as a noble gas with that.

Am not here to prove you wrong.......i just want to understand :)

It won't be as stable. Ofc not. But it's a d-block element and has no empty d orbitals.

The electronic configuration of Hg is [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2

Hence it usually exhibits an oxidation state of +2.

it is much stable compared to other metals.

How come it is a d-block element when it has 6s2 as outermost shell??

Yeah i understand it will be much stable than other metals.......although not like noble gases  ;)

If you're doing A levels, make sure your basics are clear mate. You don't want trouble in the long run.

I just said it comes close to noble gases, resisting removal of electrons. Ofc it's not one. It tends to be.

Does that explain why it is used in thermometers? Of course along with the fact it's a liquid at normal temperatures.
The temperature of the body is not 'conducted' therefore giving accurate results for the measurement of temperature...? :-[

Poorest electrical conductor as I told u, Tin (Sn).  :D

Fine no argument, but if the shells s,p,d,f are wholly filled, then too it has the charge +2, and if it behave as a noble gas, compounds containing noble gases are introduced by psychics (i mean the scientists). i.e. XeF6.

Continuous efforts matter more than the outcome.

I said it tends to...it resists removal of electrons

XeF6 is just as SF6.
i mean the same electron arrangement.

It's also a liquid at room temperature. Conduction is higher when particles are closer together.

@masterkey- yup same structure.

@Vin-I didn't get you :\

@deadly king- You're welcome  :)

For SOLID - Lead
and
For LIQUID - Mercury!
