CIE Chemistry
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:34:14 am »
Hi guys, my sister is hoping to do chemistry. I will be tutoring her but I'm not sure which paper she needs to sit. Looking at the syllabus it says all students must sit paper 1. And for the last paper she will be doing paper 6 - the alternative to practical.

My query is about paper 2 and 3. It says paper 2 is appropriate for grades C-G, while paper 3 will be of a difficulty appropriate to the higher grades. When I did my exams we didn't have this so I am not sure which paper she needs to sit. Obviously she wants to get an A, so does this mean that you cannot get an A for paper 2? Or is this similar to say doing maths or further maths?

If we go with paper 2, will she still be able to get an A? If we go with paper 3 - does it mention that it's extended on the certificate?
She doesn't do chemistry at school only combined science, so paper 2 looks like a better option since she will be writing in nov 2010 and we only have the rest of this year to cover all the material.

Paper 2 only covers the Core material and the highest mark you can achieve is a C .. Paper 3 covers the Extended material and highest mark is an A.

No the level of paper does not show .. but if your sister's aiming for an A then Paper 3 is the one she must sit.

Best of luck! :)

i think you guys should definitely go for paper 3 though it is hard but if you study properly or help her study nicely she can easily score an A in her papers...!!
BEST OF LUCK..!!! :) :) :) ;) ;) ;)

She should sit paper 3, not paper 2. (So paper 1,3, and 6).

IGCSE right?

Anyway, just make her do topical past papers after each topic and make sure she does loads of yearly past papers before the exam.

Good luck. :)

She aims for an A, this means extended which includes paper 3, as long as paper 1 and 6.

Best of Luck.! If you need any notes/resources for chemistry please let us know, I will post them for you.

Yes, Paper 2 is core. She will not have to sit it BUT it would be a good idea to make her do some of those paper 2's (past papers) for practice. :)
