Gee apple pie...u seem desperate. Did u even have a look in the booklet (i sent a link for it!!) ??
Which country u in?? Others will just be able to brief the paper, rest is up to u  !

Check out the last pages in the booklet...cos chances are that some experiments given there will come in question 1.
In fact one example already came in question1 O/N 08 paper 5!!!  ;D

Dude...thats the latest one u can ever get...they haven't changed the syllabus since 2007!!
If u want specimen papers then get them of the download site :www.freeexampapers.com (http://www.freeexampapers.com)
Hey which city u in india??

Ahmedabad  :P
I didn't know mumbai students would come for help here!!
I thought there are amazing schools there! Which school u in? Which subjects u giving?
What other problems u got with paper 5??
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: evildevil on May 15, 2009, 04:01:28 pm
ya ther are some gud skools but it all depends upon the teacher and how they communicate with us..
we got a 60yr old professor who cant speak properly and never listens to us...he thinks we know everything......

well in p5 basically i get confused on q1..the thought experiment...mainly on how to prove or the relations with the right kind of graphs...and the diagrams to an extent....and in q2 the last 3-4mrk question..sometime it gets hard to relate...

well u seem quite confident...how r ur preparations goinn on n from wher r u studin???

lol  :D
I'm external student! What did u get in AS level physics!
By the way i'm not confident...i'm sorta repaired for paper 5 and still want to know what will come b4!!
See for question 1 and 2 check out the booklet...u know 1 example exp. from there came in q1 O/n 08 paper5!
u could also see http://www.rit.edu/cos/uphysics/graphing/graphingpart1.html#Glossary (http://www.rit.edu/cos/uphysics/graphing/graphingpart1.html#Glossary) for q 2-but some stuff in this link is not needed! There are specific requirements in answering q1 do u know 'em?

What other subjects are u taking?

dude, I don't know if you are aware of that, or if you are doing 2004 just for practice, but the syllabus changed in 2006 or 2007 not sure. better do the most recent one, aswell as the specimen

yes but the q2s of 2001- 2006 paper5 are similar to question 1 of nowadays paper5s!!
Now they mostly provide an equation (but dunno if they will this time  :-\) ; back then they didn't, but the diagram, procedures, safety prec. and additional details (good design features) were/are still needed.

So it might b helpful if v look at those too, they may repeat something... ;)

Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: taha12 on May 19, 2009, 09:17:20 pm
Ok man this is how you go
in question 2 p5
suppose
I/V         V/V          lg(I/I)       lg(V/V)
2             4+/- 0.1
3            7+/- 0.1

you can simply calculate values of Log I example log 2 =0.301 write it in the column
lg(I/I)

for log V you calculate value  Log V example log 4= 0.602 write it in the column under lg(V/V)

absolute errors in lg (V/V):
error in V/V is +/- 0.1 thus absolute error in lg (V/V) would be *
take the first value in the group V/V which is 4
(log 4)  - (log 3.9) = 0.01 to 1 sig fig
       or
(log 4.1)- (log 4) = 0.01 to 1 sig fig
note that 3.9 or 4.1 value comes from subtracting or adding 0.1 from actual value which was 4 see column above of V/V
both ways are correct

same for the second value 7 +/- 0.1
log 7.1 - log 7.0
or
 log 7 - log 6.9

another example

100 +/- 20

you do for absolute errors

log 100 -log 80

or

log 120 -log 100

just remember to either add or subtract the error from actual value
tricky
if its square of distance

suppose d/cm = 2 cm+/- 0.1
the errors in "d square world be"
(2.1 square ) - 2.0 square
  or

2.0 square - 1.9 square

this would give you error
in this case d square = 4+/-0.4

hope it solves it all for every one

Post by: bilalar on May 19, 2009, 09:27:18 pm
I/V         V/V          lg(I/I)       lg(V/V)
2             4+/- 0.1
3            7+/- 0.1

another way of calculatin the errors is :

lg 4 = 0.602

take (lg 4.1 - lg 3.9)/2
this will give  error +/- 0.01

this is easier and faster method
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: taha12 on May 19, 2009, 09:30:30 pm
the method is same just a small tweak with the rule
just remember to take into account the upper and lower limit ;)

da Q1 of P5 was same as p5 in 2005...except then da p5 wz a practical and now its written and dey used da steel ruler than and now they used the wood ruler
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: naveed1234 on May 20, 2009, 02:07:36 pm
p5 was kinda ok....minimum 25/30.. ;D
By the way the gradient shud be multiplied by 10^5

and did anyone get their y intercept positive???then its WRONG 100% cuz the x-axis starts from 1.5...it doesnt start from zero...dats da only mistake i made.... >:(
Title: Re: A2 physics p5

Just wanted to know,
incase if anyone has any idea,
I wrote to answers for gradient, and i guess the right one is 1.29 x 10^5, and thats one of my answers.
So will i get the marks?

What did you people get the value for min force and the distance between the fringes?

guyz naveed1234 mentioned dat we had to multiply the gradient wid 10^5....i was abt to do the same thing in my paper but i think it is rong.....
U see....the table was smthng like this (i am not sure of the value but they were around the ones i rote)

(10^-5) ... lg d(10^-5)              And to calculate gradient we had to subtract two lg d values(of course) and this value was the
31                1.49                     denominator....any way the point is 1.49 - 1.15 = 0.34.............There is no need to do anything with
.                                              10^5.... i tell u why. if u use 31 X 10^-5 and use this full value to calculate its log, then it is -3.51 and
.                                            similarly for for 14 X 10^-5 we get its log as -3.85. If we subtract the two...-3.51-(-3.85) we get the
14                1.15                   same answer which is 0.34........

So dats why i THINK dat there is no need to multiply the gradient value wid anything....cuz we'll get the same answer either we use full value or the other. Anyway my gradient value was 1.27....and the constant p was smthng around 2.4 (and its postive) to get the value of p we had to do the inverse log of y-intercept......Neway.now next is Pure Mathemaics... :-\

Yeah i totally agree wit M4@li...
They had mentioned (10-5) jus to confuse us...
Whoever used 10-5, has made a big mistake...
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: sahi1990 on May 20, 2009, 09:11:44 pm
ya me 2 ................i also agree , they made us confused . ....my gradient was also 1.27 ........most of the student wrote 10^5 with their gradient .........which is wrong ............but dont worry  try to make ur next paper better.................. best of luck  .
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: mac on May 21, 2009, 04:50:46 am
:o OH CRAP!!!!!! Haha...u know when i calculated the gradient i ended up with ~1.27 and remembered about the o/n 08 paper since it had d^2/10^-4 on the y-axis. So in yesterday's paper i saw the lg(d/10^-5)  in the graph's x-axis. Then i scribbled the gradient +/- error  and put down 10^5 after the entire value of gradient!!!!  Do u think they are going to penalize POT (power of ten)? In O/N 08 P5 mark scheme they say don't penalise POT! it will prob. b just 2-3 marks lost, right??? :-\

I really regret this now!!!! They def. would hav confused a lot of ppl who done the O/n 08 paper!
I shud have remembered that 0/n 08 paper didn't  hav logs...  :-\ :P :P
I hope Q1 takes care of this mistake!

Is the grade threshold gonna b higher this time?? In O/N 08 it was +22/30 for A!!!
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: M4@li on May 21, 2009, 12:00:43 pm
yeah... these cie ppl try to play evry trick in the book to confuse us....

anyway can smone tell me dat in the last part what were we supposed to rite the values of p and q....the value of q was the value of gradient itself which we calculated earlier or we had to do smthng else to obtain q....

The gradethreshold will prbly be arnd 23 this time...(most of my class mates including me found q1 easy...)
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: iz on May 21, 2009, 04:26:26 pm
yeh q was gradient and p was 10 inverse of the y-intercept cz the y-intercept was log p..and are u sure abt not ultiplying by 10 to the power of -5?
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: khagga_926 on May 21, 2009, 05:29:15 pm
yea it will around 20-23 cz Q1 wz ez and kinda some dificulty in Q2 but overall it wz ez...Q1 wz same like in M/J 05 P5 excpt P5 w a practical then and they used a steel ruler then
Title: Re: A2 physics p5
Post by: M4@li on May 21, 2009, 07:54:10 pm
yeah iz....i am sure that we didnt had to multiply the gradient with 10 to the power of 5 or anythng else.

Anyway it is over now....study hard for the upcoming exams.... ;D
