Title: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!
Post by: sanity_master on May 04, 2009, 07:43:17 am
A simple electronic calculator is allowed in the exam.

The following should be taken into consideration about the calculator:

    * The calculator must be of a size suitable for use on the desk
    * The calculator must be silent , with a small visual display only
    * Calculator cases , instruction leaflets or formulae printed on the lid or cover of the calculator must not be in the possession of the     candidates
    * External storage media i.e. card , tape , disk , smartcard or plug-in modules must not be in the possession of candidates during the examination
    * Programmable calculators may be used but no prepared programs may be taken into the examination room.

Calculators with any of the following facilities are prohibited:

    * Graphic display
    * Data banks
    * Dictionaries
    * Language translators
    * QWERTY keyboards
    * Manipulation of text or formulae
    * Symbolic differentiation or integration
    * Capability of remote communication with other machines

Thank you.

The casio 991 ES does not symbolically differentiate or integrate. The sticking point will be manipulation of formulae. We need to check on this specific point.

Title: Re: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!

about graphic display:: there is that kind of calculators where u just enter the equation u got for a graph...and it simply shows u how the graph will look like....with the coordinates and all......i friend of mine was disqualified before from a math exam cuz he used one of those  :o

i guess he got over it by now :D

when my calculator usually stops in an exam i keep hitting it till it work again...but i dont know if we can replace it

Title: Re: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!
Post by: sanity_master on May 04, 2009, 10:19:16 am
i've done some research but im not sure of the results.....on MS and ES

MS are the calculators that are developed from the ordinary calculators (the not scientific ones) so i guess MS= Modern Scientific

the ES are the newly made calculators, so i guess ES = Electronic scientific

P.S:: those conclusions are mine, so if they r wrong blame no one but me (LOL)
Title: Re: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!
Post by: SGVaibhav on May 04, 2009, 10:21:38 am
anyone who has done his studies and can donate his time, plz do this

write down the models which are allowed (there might be around 10) and just paste a link to them
that will be kool

thanx for the conclusion
i have never used ES, and i personally prefer MS, because i have been using that from quite a long time (from around 3 to 4 years)
i have to betray my 991 MS  :'( :'( :'(
Title: Re: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!
Post by: sanity_master on May 04, 2009, 11:55:35 am
i've been using ES and MS since the first minute i bought my first scientific calculator (about 5-6 years from nw) :D

y dont u just compare the calc u got with the prohibited rules up there.....if any of the stated ones is in ur calc then u cnat use it....if its clean.....then no need to betray it :D

Theres also a Casio calculator, cant remember the name, the one that has the little solar panels on the top right side, can be used to calculate formulas that inclued X in them like similtanious equations. they help alooot but im not sure if they are allowed in the exam even though i think they are, and will prob be used here. my math teacher didnt really say anything bout it even though he is very fair and quite strict.

Breakin news....

my friends say that their older brothers entered the exam with the fx-991ES.......and nothing HAPPENED!!

so i think anything like this one is OK....i wonder how its ok though, cuz this calculator can do matrices, simultaneous equations and other few things that i dont know yet...but COOL!!

so i guess that ur calculator sweetsh (fx-350ES) is allowed cuz its like the fx-991ES
Title: Re: The type of CALCULATORS that should be used!!

i think yea it is allowed.....i noticed that anything below 100MS or ES is ok...cuz they have no extra options as doing equations or graphs and so........so i guess any thing below

100!! is ok....

astarmathsandphysics....u didnt answer my Q....wt do u think about the whole prohibited stuff and about the types of calculators ppl were posting earlier....r they ok?? from ur experience i guess u almost know wts ok and wts not
