Best approach: the funnel approach.

Start with the subject in general and then, come down to your specific case.

E.g. Capital Punishment should be abolished. Discuss.

Proceed > Talk about criminality and punishment in general. And then, come to the specific case you have to discuss, i.e. capital punishment.
