Title: CIE A LEVEL GRADES
Post by: falafail on May 15, 2010, 08:51:22 pm
does anyone how AS and A2 grades are combined?
do they add up the actual number scores from AS to A2? or do they just use the grade results like A/B/C, and if so then HOW THE HELLLL??????

just curious.

Da grade threshold, r marks obtained by a ideal candidate, but Overall % which is important.
4 A* its not da same, although da overall required is sme as A, v shud get 90%+ 4 da A/level papers,if u require 80%+ 4 an A.

what do you mean, ONLY 80? for some years the grade threshold was so that 60% gets you an A. we're f**ked. -_-

are there any thresholds??or is it just 80% A,70% B
that's what i wanna know.

also, i found this:
In the current system, A levels are graded from A* to E.[12]  The raw mark in papers are converted to marks on a Uniform Mark Scale (UMS), so that every A level subject has a maximum of 200, 400 or 600 UMS marks, and every AS-level subject 100, 200 or 300, depending on the number of units. Each grade requires a specific percentage of the UMS points available in both the A- and AS-levels:

Grade    Percentage of UMS marks
A*           80%+ overall plus 90%+ in A2 units [13]
A            80%+
B            70% - 79%
C            60% - 69%
D            50% - 59%
E            40% - 49%

I think the fixed threshold posted by Falafail has just been put into use this year, since we now have the A* grade.  :-\

Indeed. What I believe is that They will grade everything based on the UMS. So its like, almost hte same really. You cant generalise and say 80 will be enough for A. Thats a risky move to take. It could be higher based on the exam paper. Also, if youre really aiming for A*, then my advice is to just take the difference between the A marks, and the B marks, and just add them to the A marks, to get the threshold for A*. Thats what I believe. Also, a person with a UMS of 100 may not get Full correct in all the papers. Thats important to note

And Mr. Falafail:

I think that A* is plain 90% according to the UMS. And since the weightage is 50-50 AS A2, Im not really sure if the criteria is also 90% in A2 units. For CIE im sure i read that its 90% UMS.

And, what they do is to take the 50% of our marks from AS and and 50% from ur A2 if im correct. They do not take the grade results only no. They take your marks into consideration. Thats why you shld aim as high as possible in AS exams. Obiviously different papers contribute different weightage to your overall marks. FOr Example in Chemistry CIE, Paper 4 if im correct carries like 40 % (not too sure ) or like 35 % of your Overall A Level marks.
Check on their website for more details
