Title: How were the exams?(Edexcel)
Post by: Darth Austrakast on May 13, 2010, 09:23:00 am
I hope the restriction for exam discussion of Edexcel 6BI07 and 6PH07 is over  :)
how were the exams? Mine were pretty much okay..........I found the Bio paper tricky but consistent to the new syllabus questions. However the physics alternative to practical was a total pain..............

u can discuss unit 3 bio & phy papers

i did phy , it wasn't hard

In bio a question was asked regarding the modification of bibliography. What change did you guys made in the bibliography?

there is no unofficial mark scheme

Yeah, u're right, u're talkin about the international written alternative to practicals for as?? I did it as well, it wasnt that hard......However, I had a few doubts, u thnk u can clear them for me??

1. 1st MCQ...the current answer was 20 mA??
2. 3rd MCQ i think....the LDR one...what was the dependent variable?
3. What would be the 3 precautions 4 measuring reaction time?? I've written avoiding paralax error, and keeping the device vertical, but could u clarify this 4 me?
4. How would you draw the ray path through the glass block??
5. The sini/sinr does pass through the origin, right? But how would you explain why?
6. I got the refractive index as 1.59..Some others got it like me, while others got quite diff values like 1.39, 1.48, etc...U think tht's right??

I know its gonna be a pain to ans all this, but jus be concise....Thanks....

for the FIRST  MCQs  i answered B which is 20 m , and for the 3rd one the answer is light intensity

for the precautions, i wrote , repeat/ take average , avoid parrlex  error , make sure the ruler is vertical

for the line , u have to say that u make two marks on the block where the light is passing into the block
and out of the block , and then remove the block  ,and draw a line between the two marks

also , i said it shouldn't pass , because refractive index will be zero their

i got the refractive index = 1.4

i wrote 20 mA
dependent variable would be resistance
well my precautions matches with yours........
rays can me drawn by tracing the light and marking its bath with crosses and then by joining the crosses
my refractive index was 1.46
Title: Re: How were the exams?(Edexcel)
Post by: T.Q on May 13, 2010, 10:55:02 am

dependent variable would be resistance

independent was the distance

dependent was the light intensity

tq i dnt kno if repeat n take average is corret cuz it is reaction so every time it may be diff i said check for zero error instead :p

ya , because every time it will have a different reaction time, so u have to repeat and take average

Dependent variable was resistance cuz da question clearly said ' ohmeter acts as a light indicator' so an ohmeter measures in terms of resistance which is directly proportional to light intensity...but u cant literally see da light intensity varyin rite? i dunno if this is ryt but dats my logic..hehehe  so i agree wid Austrakast! :D

Hey hold on i made my graph throught da straight line n got my refractive index  as 1.46 which is close 2 da real value of glass (1.49) but why is every1 sayin not thru da origin cus i made a best fit line by missin da first point! also my reason was dat sin 1 is directly proportional 2 sin r!

im confused :S

As for the above rest, I agree with y'all...But I still think

1. The dependent variable for the LDR should be distance probably
2. Any correct sini/sinr graph must pass through the origin....Check this out.....http://www.thealy.com/LCPhysics/exp/exp06/snell_values.htm
3. As for my value of 1.59, that too should be just right as the previous mark scheme guidelines tell the examiner to allow for the ans between a max diference of 0.3........
Title: Re: How were the exams?(Edexcel)
Post by: Darth Austrakast on May 13, 2010, 04:25:22 pm
the independent variable is distance-the one which you can control and change; the dependent variable is light intensity which changes as you change the independent variable, in this case resistance

fr the 1st mcq...iv forgotten what i chose hehe..bt fr sure it was one outa the 20 or 200..
then i chose the independent variable as distance while the dependent i thot it shud b resistance cz u cant measure lyt intensity so ultimately resistance cz thats what ur gna measure..
then i got the refractiv index as 1.5....n i wrote the graph should pas thru the origin..but tqs got a point..if it duz the refractiv index is zero...really confused abt that...
ok lets discus the 1st q frm sec B...my 1st confusion ther is what was the q askin...one of my friend said it only asked the advantages n disadvantages of n xperiment conducted with beaker thermometer n blah...
as for me..i rote the disadvantages n advantages of both usin a datalogger n doin the xperiment usin a liquid-whatever-method-they-wrote
after i rote my paper i was rly happy bt then after discusin im nt the same...proly a tiny lil dot of getin a lil more than jst 'happy':( :|

Hi..sorry im new here..i dont know why the line shouldnt be going thru the origin..for refraction to occur, the incident light should hit the block at angle. if it doesnt hit it at an angle , the no refraction occurs. By the way this qs..? is bcasically yr 10 stuff right? like pure ig.
I wrote that it should pass thru the origin..

NOOOOOO it was easy!!! i mean it was good...and maybe yes the questions seemed prolly scary but u really gta keep ur cool ...they wer prty strait!!
thats what i thot..
n yeh...im positiv the graph in phy shud pas thru origin...
cz its like all graphs that hav a gradient that measures a kinda property..like fr young modulus...they all wil ofcourse giv u a zero if pas thru origin...light duznt bend when the angle is zero...its only the speed that changes...n refractiv index is more like sth that measures hw much bendin -um thats what i think....!!:|

n wat abt the test 4 OH- ions in chem ? :S

N da colour of da starch indicator?

n which flask did u guys use?

n wat were da 4 things on da diagram?

test frr oh- : add methyl orange(color change: orange to yellow) or phenolphthalein(color change from colorles to pink)

starch color change- blue to white..
standard flask
n 4things-i made only the condenser wt the corct arows of water goin in n comin out
um others nah:( thou they gta b the beaker n...um...duno hehe

for test for OH- i put use red litmus paper nd it turns blue .. shouldve put methyl orange or phenolphalein..
Starch indicator goes from blue-black to colourless! not white!
You use a Volumetric Flask to make up the standard solution...

ah ok volumetric flask. i cudnt rmbr the name:D.abt the colorles thing..actualy many of my mates too said its colorless..but acordin to the notes given by my teachers its white...

Well everybody how was the Chemistry Unit 1 exam?
mine was ok though  i might lose 2-3 marks in Mcq
hey wat did u guys wrote in that question where you have to compare the conductivities of CaCl2 and MgCl2?
Title: Re: How were the exams?(Edexcel)
Post by: mash49 on May 22, 2010, 02:55:01 pm
Hey I was confused about the conductivities, too. i just wrote that Ba ion is more ionic, as it was 1 mark..
And I read a couple of posts about the phys 3b paper, and u people gave the first MC Question 20m? I gave 2000micro, i did some calculations and the current came as .027A, so if we want to get a proper current reading, we should go for the one which goes upto .002, i.e. 2000micro, which would give a reading of the .027A properly.
And did anyone give bio u3b? I couldn't ans. the 4 marks about changing the bibliography...

Seriously? i found M1 and Phy 1 Both Verrry Easy........But Tricky and By the way is it me? or tht Mechanics Helped us alot in Phy1 and if the Threshold is wat u r saying...then lol isA i will score the 120/120
Phy1 i found the mqs hard... the one about the train moving to the right.....
i answered C but when i was in the bus going bak me and frnds tried it
we threw a pencil when car was moving but the pencil fell at the same postion ???
But El 7amdilAllah i did in all of my Exams Great except in 6PH07 i found rlly diffcult maybe cuz our teacher didnt concentrate on Unit 3 tht much compared to unit 2
By the way...Im excepting Unit 2 Phy to be hard
