46 Produce a new report which:
• shows a summary of the week 37 sales only
• uses only the Staff and Income fields
• calculates the sum of the Income field for each member of Staff
• counts the number of holidays sold by each member of Staff
question is from m/j 2009 paper 2 (igcse ict)
i know how to do it in access 2007 but my school has 2003; so if anybody could help me do this in 2003 it would be appreciated
-
hey i got this one..
in 2003 ryt...quite simple...
jus right click on the "query design view"
look for "totals"...click it n another row of totals will appear just below the "tables" row
once this is done the row automatically takes "group by"
let the staff remail grouped "group by"
now add two of the income and select "sum" or "count"
ur things done... if u wer able to do it in 2007 u'll surely get it in 2003
i feel 2007 if far better than 2003 for igcse :) :)
-
im not getting it
i got the totals row and left the staff as "grouped by"
now, what do u mean by "now add two of the income"?
-
got it at last
your absolutely right though, 2007 is much better and easier
Thanks a lot :)
-
ur welcome...
post ur doubts here pls..
-

30 In the stylesheet excerpt, amend the style for heading 1 so that the font size is 36
point. Change the stylesheet so that this is correct.
31 In the stylesheet excerpt, amend the style for a list so that it is italic. Change the
stylesheet so that this is correct.
32 In the stylesheet excerpt, amend the style for a paragraph so that it will accept any
generic sans-serif font as well as the specified fonts. Change the stylesheet so that
this is correct.

and Price is greater than £2
PLS TELL ME HOW TO DO IN EXCEL 2003

in the drop down menu there should be an option of "greater than or equal to" if not go to custom and select greater than or equal to "60"
now autofilter for price also...and select "greater than" and "2"
u get it???
to remove the filter jus select the cells/column and remove the filter option..hope u get it...

for example, if there is a table in the doc., it should not be half on one page and half on next page... same with paragraphs.. they want you to place them together.. you can do this by inserting break points.

-

Highlighter. And try to read well on what they ask for, unlike me, when they told me to highlight my name on the HTML printout codes, i instead went and highlighted my name on all the printouts by mistake because there wasn't much time left.

To put 3 slides in one page, go to print preview, and near the top of the page you are viewing, there will be a drop down box with different options on how to view your presentation and one of them will be the 3 slides per page with the lines on the side.
Hope it helps! I got my IT papers 2 and 3 on thurday and friday!

Please i need help < MAy / June 2007 Questions, 29/30/31/32 , please if any one have any answer , attatch and show me the steps!!!!!!!
-
paper 2?????...it should b because its kinda new...here..
p {color: #ff00ff; font-family: arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px}
li {color: #00bfff; font-family: times, “times new roman”; font-size: smaller; font-style: italic}
h1 {color: #0000ff; font-family: times, “times new roman”; font-size: 36pt}
its really easy..
"#ff00ff" is called the hexadecimal value of a colour..(it can b nythin besides metioned)
after the hash "#" there are 6 digits of number/text...like ff 00 ff ...they r always in a pair..each colour has a different code..
1st pair represents red
2nd is green
3rd is green...
so basically its like #(ff) {00} [ff]
(red){green} (never put these tho..jus fo ya understanding)
one of the ques say.....amend the style for a paragraph so that it will accept any
generic sans-serif font as well as the specified fonts....
u jus havta pput a comma after the font name and type sans-serif or sometimes evn serif depending on the ques...like ...
p {color: #ff00ff; font-family: arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px}
now u understand??
-
In june 2009 Q15 (frontpage);
-the red and blue components of h1, h2, h3 and h5 remain the same and there is no green components in any of these styles
-the paragraph style has no red components and the green and blue components are set to 50%
i cant understand how to do it please help!!
-
@saroona
if u've read me previous post u might no that every colour has RED GREEN BLUE components...
like this 1 fo instance..
#FF0080
FF- is the red component
00-if the green component
80- is the blue
once u get this each code FF or 80 means something
FF - 100%
C0 - 75%
80 - 50%
40 - 25%
00 - 0% (or no component of the colour)
now u figure out how to do these tasks...u'll remember better..hopw this helps.. ;) :)
-

I guess thanks for the help guys, either no one got me clearly or no one knew how to solve the Excel part in 2007 Paper 3. But anyways, found out how to solve it on my own.
-
hey as the ict exam is over can v discuss it here with the permission for the moderators.??
im jobless right now..:P XP
-
hey um can u guys help me?
1. describe a router and its purpose
2. describe the use of WIFI and bluetooth in networks
3 intenets and intranets
4 how to setup a small network involving access to the internet, understanding the need to set up the use of a browser, email and an ISP
5 and um 3 examples of expert systems
-
1) A router is a hardware device which takes and analyzes data, then directs them to the appropriate location.
2)WiFi is a enabled device (in phones, laptops, iTouch etc) which can connect to the internet via a wireless network, you can create a Hotspot to allow one or more devices to connect to the internet wireless. Bluetooth use in a network is to allow users to exchange data, it's useful because it overcomes any synchronization problems.
3)Internet is a global system connected by various computer networks (not as secure as Intranet). Intranet is practically the same but used in huge firms (I.e Microsoft) to securely transfer information, whether they are in the USA and have to send volatile information to a sub-firm in Asia.
4)Not sure about the small network thing but I think you are talking about needing the use of dial up. You have to have a dial up, internet browser such as Google Chrome (anything that can access the WorldWideWeb). Yo also need access to a Internet Service Provider. All this comes when you buy a computer. Not sure if I answered this part.
5) Medicine expert systems, Car engine fault expert systems and Agriculture expert system.
Hope this helped :)
-
gee thanks snake
+rep :D
hey and i got a few more questions, sorry :(
1 flat files, relational tables ( relationships, primary keys. and foreign keys)
2 difference between analogue and digital data
3 file, record, primary key
4 what are the capabilities and limitations of ict
5 web 2.0, wikis , blogs, digital media uploading websites, new types of social networking websites
6 phishing, pharming, SPAM
-
6- Phishing: its when u try to hack or rob people by sending them messages which tells them to right their passwords or whatever (for example a bank) when you are not the bank...
Spam: useless messages, advertising, bla bla
By the way ur signature is awesome xD
-
1)Not sure about this one (it is kinda late here sorry :P)
2) All you need to know is that computers can't 'read' analogue data and can only read Digital. So if you want a computer to read data off of a sensor then you need a Analogue to Digital converter (usually a modem).
3)File consists of data, Record is a single structured data item in a table, Primary Key is a unique record (such as Bar Code or Civil ID Number) that is unique to each field.
4)Don't actually understand this one.
5)Web 2.0 is the name given to recent development of interactive websites, allows you to share info (Facebook, Notes) Interact (Chat comment) Collaborate (Create web pages) Create (Youtube vids is a good example)
Wikis are pages edited and allow people to collaborate information. Blogs are personal websites of people that post about various things (like war, fashion, games). Media upload sites are sites which allow you to upload and share Media such as videos or pictures (Youtube,Flickr). Social networking sites are sites which allow you to connect and interact with other people/friends, they allow you to share pictures videos and other (Facebook, Myspace)
6) Phishing is when some one is trying to gain personal information by acting as a official and stealing your information (an example of this is hotmail. You sometimes might get e-mails claiming your e-mail has been hacked and they require your info, once you send it they hack your e-mail). Pharming is when a hacker redirects a sites traffic to his own to gain either views or steal info, for example you open facebook and you go to a site which looks like it, you might think they updated it or something so you enter your info and get hacked. Spam is unwanted information, or e-mails etc.
By the way thx for the rep but it still says 0. Hmm glitch?
Any way I hope I helped, keep em coming!
-
whole lot of hard word there... :) :)
check ur profile ur rep is "41".. :)
-
Oh ok thanks lol.
Yea they asked for it ;)

hey , can u please educate me on verification and validation in ICT theory! :)

but thx for the info

Verification is when another person checks if the data entered had any mistakes, there is two ways to do this. Compare data on screen with that on paper or get two people to enter the same data.
Validation is when a computer checks if the information entered is valid. Examples include validating e-mail and password enters(i.e. if your e-mail username match's that of your password)
If you need anything else just ask
-

Heyy guys. In paper 1, there is a question
"The systems analyst will also design a medical staff record system. She will need to
produce a screen display which the hospital administrators could use to read details of
a member of staff.
Design a suitable output format for displaying the details of one member of staff."
In the marking scheme, it says that it should "clearly" look like a computer output screen. What does a computer output screen look like?

INPUT/HARDWARE .. Motion sensor , pressure sensor , Pressure pads ,light sensors , contact switches ,proximity sensors ..
PROCESSING : processor always monitors the input/environment , if any traces of pressure (on the plates) or movement or light or any vary in temperature .. micro processor sends a signal to an output device ..
OUTPUT : alarm light with alarm sound

..
False. "Any traces" wold be insubmissable.
For instance if it is a five marks question, the model answer would be as follows.
- Microprocessor constantly monitors the analogue signal.
- Analogue signal is compared with preset value at real time.
- If pressure reading on the pressure pad is less than preset value, no action.
- If pressure reading on the pressure pad exceeds preset value, signal is sent to the output device.
- The output device in this case would be a silent alarm sent to the police (buzzer / light) - You can gain two marks by writing two different outputs.

my questions are
(b) Describe how three output devices would be used to control the growing conditions.
1 motor for shutting window - light sensor
2 water sprinkler - moisture sensor (notice that it does not have to be corresponding with the ans in part a)
3 air conditioner - temperature sensor
(c) Describe the computer processing which would be required to maintain the necessary
growing conditions.
Conditional :
- Microprocessor constantly monitors the analogue signal.
- Analogue signal is compared with preset value at real time.
Any three will do:
- If temperature is higher than preset value, turn on the fan.
- If temperature is higher than preset value, turn on the air conditioner.
- If temperature is lower than preset value, turn off the air conditioner.
- If light intensity is higher than preset value, shut the window.
- If light intensity is lower than preset value, open the window.
- If moisture level is higher than preset value, turn on the water sprinkler.
- If moisture level is lower than preset value, turn off the water sprinkler.

Batch : Data collected over a period of time, processed at one go. Examples include producing utility bills.
Online : Contacts the server computer, updated real time. Examples include booking tickets.
Real time : Responds to input straightaway. Examples include monitoring a patient's condition at a hospital.
An ordinary DVD disk has a capacity of 17 GB. A Blu-ray disk has a capacity of 50 GB.
Thanks for reminding me about Blu-ray, did not realise that they have introduced it this year. But then since I own a PS3 I am aware of this LOL.
-
what is the difference between verification and validation with the examples
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? answer me please
Verification - Checking to see if data has been copied correctly from one media to another (e.g. inputting data from a printout). Examples include double entry of data and visual comparison.
Validation - Checking to see if data inputted is acceptable. Examples include range check, format check, check digit, presence check etc.

Likely to appear as a 5 marks / 6 marks question.
- Interactive input screen
- Questions about the car / patient's condition asked
- Rule base
- Knowledge base
- Inference engine
- Output showing probablity
If required to talk about evaluation :
- Doctors are interviewed to identify whether original task requirment has been met / possible improvements / limitations.
-
by the way thanx for telling me

Question 2
- Encryption - Data during transmission are jumbled up.
- Digital signature - Website of the bank verified.
- Firewall - Prevents hackers from intercepting the transmission by hacking into domestic terminal.
- Password - Only those that how knows the password can access the account.
-
can anyone brief me on internet telephony services?
Don't persume that it would appear in the examination, did you mean video conferencing instead?
-
no,i meant internet telephony services(VoIP)...it says something about this in section 7.2 of the syllabus so i just wanted to ask.
-
Yeah I noticed that as well ... However the endorsed textbook did not mention a thing so I presume that it is ... exempted?

perhaps...well thanx!

Basically you should say something along the lines of "considering the respective advantages and disadvantages, I think that online banking is the way to go because its benefits outweights the possible shortcomings etc."
Yes, the examiner is instructed to give credits to answers that demostrates understanding of the topic.
-
princess12 : you have forgotten the magic word ... do say please.

-
Questionaire : A form filled in by respondants which helps the system analyst to identify the problems with the current system. The main advantage of using questionaire over the other methods is that it takes much less time for the respondant to complete the questionaire instead of sitting through an interview.

thanx ;D

Best thing about ICT is that u just scan the book in ur mind, go to exam and print everything on paper ;D

ISBN IS INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER MY TEACHER TOLD ME LIKE THAT
-
Regarding the designing an input screen bit I think it has been phased out since 09, at least that's what my ICT teacher told me ...
The order does not matter, in order to attain full six points, you must include the book title and 4 optional items (data of issue, date of return, additional book details - synopsis ?, author name, genre, number in stock etc.), also the screen should look like an input screen, that means incorporating input mask and drop down list as required.
-
U R TELLING ABOUT THE INPUT SCREEN
TELL ME YES OR NO
-
CAN U REPLY ME NOW FAST ??? ??? ???
-
Yes, I am referring to the section which requires you to draw out the design for an input screen, it is no longer required.
-
do i have to put previous or forward button in output screen like records or in input screen only?
-
Like I said it is highly unlikely that you will be asked to draw out the design of an input screen / output screen tomorrow. But yes, you should include the previous / forward button in both input screen and output screen.
-
if i get 2A's in practicals and C in theory.. what's the grade i am expected to get ???
-
u get A
-
Hey what is the difference between Type Check and Format Check in data Validation??
Thank you.
-
formate check
Some things are always entered in the same format.
Think about postcode, it always has a letter, letter, number, number, number, letter and letter e.g. CV43 9PB. There may be the odd occasion where it differs slightly e.g. a Birmingham postcode B19 8WR, but the letters and numbers are still in the same order.
A picture or format check can be set up to make sure that you can only put letters where letters should be and numbers where numbers should be.
type check
Sometimes you only want data of a certain type entered into a field.
For example, in a clothes shop, dress sizes may range from 8 to 18. A number data type would be a suitable choice for this data. By setting the data type as number, only numbers could be entered and you would prevent anyone trying to enter ‘ten’ or ‘ten and a half’.
Some data types can perform an extra type check. For example, a date data type will ensure that a date you have entered can actually exist e.g. it would not allow you to enter the date 31/02/07.
-
okey thanss

And I think "ISBN/bar code:" would come the first on the list as a key field...
You can have any suitable fields .. I dont think the order of the fields matters too.. its jus that you should hav at least 4-5 of them ..
-

Sorry, i didnt get what you meant by "input mask" and where do we insert the "drop down list"? Do we draw in the drop down list beside the field name?

You don't have to know the advantages and disadvantages of bulletin boards.
You just have to know what they are, and that its one of the benefits of using the internet

A bulletin board (pinboard, pin board or notice board in British English) is a place where people can leave public messages, for example, to advertise things to buy or sell, announce events, or provide information. Bulletin boards are often made of a material such as cork to facilitate addition and removal of messages or it can be placed on the computer so people can leave and erase messages for other people to read and see.

My teacher said that you HAVE to use paragraphs
No IGCSE exam accepts for you to answer in bullet points
Unless they said something like this
Statement 1: ___________________________________________
Statement 2: ____________________________________________
-
my sir told me "brief" .. as in para i guess .. i texted him today ..=)
-
Plus if you use bullet points, you'd be wasting space.
And if you do that, you may have to answer out of the lines, and I heard that some examiners won't correct your work that way
So just to be on the safe side, write all your answers in one paragraph. ;D

in system analysis and design:investigation or analysis
It goes like this
Fact finding
Feasibility study
Analysis
System design
testing
implementation
Documentation
evaluation
But you don't have to know it in great detail, so dont worry about it
Just go over past papers and see what type of questions were asked about it, and concentrate on those
But also study it in general, cause they might get some new questions

Knowing what they are.
And a bit more detail on multimedia presentations
-
difference between pin pads and numeric keypad
adv and disadv for both???
They are two different things.
- The credit card is inserted into the chip reader
- Card is checked for validity
- If card is valid, transaction approved
- If card is illegimitate or reported stolen, transaction refused
- Customer is prompted to insert PIN
- If the inserted PIN matches the PIN on the card, transaction approved
- If the inserted PIn does not correspond with the PIN on the card, transaction refused
-
how r u ppl studying for this part of the syllabus:
ie -->"communication applications (such as newsletters, websites, multimedia presentations, music
scores, cartoons, flyers and posters);"
We studied this:
What is multimedia?
The main ways that the computer can feed the user's senses is through the use of:
colour
motion of areas of the screen as appropriate
a range of standard shape tools such as rectangles and circles
sound
motion through the use of motors
Games on computers first started out without any sound at all, and many people thought that the inclusion of sound to a game would not make much difference. In fact it was soon found that adding even simple sounds enhanced the overall experience of the computer user.
The use of multimedia also allows the possibility of user input to make selections and choices. This is called interactive multimedia, because the user interacts with the material in some way.
Examples of multimedia
If you send a CD of digital photos of your party to a friend, and you add some sound clips, you are preparing a multimedia presentation because you are using more than one type of media.
Video is a good example of multimedia in that it uses colour, onscreen motion and sound. However on a computer it can also have the user interact with the material eg:
stop the display
go to various places on the video
answer questions that are posed
select from various options that are presented by the interactive package
an educational type of package can ask for help or extra information
A virtual reality application - eg a cockpit simulator that's used to train pilots on the ground - is an example of multimedia. In a virtual reality simulator the pilot, though not actually in the plane, feels as though he/she is.
A wide range of multimedia programmes are available on other formats, for example, educational training packages to learn a foreign language or a CD ROM/DVD encyclopaedia.
I've got a bit more on that if you need it
-

And a bit more detail on multimedia presentations
When comparing multimedia presentations to desktop publishing, include the followings :
- Can add video / animations
- Can add audio
-
You don't have to know anythign on the last two
Other than knowing that you have to check if something is wrong, and why

ya i need n Thanks a lot
:) :) :)
Multimedia and the Internet
The Internet is a massive source of multimedia content. By this we mean that we can access various sorts of media. These include:
sound - e.g. MP3 files. MP3 is an short form for MPEG layer 3.It is the standard format for compressing a sound sequence into a very small file, up to 12 times smaller. The good thing about MP3 is that there is no or very little loss of sound quality from the original file.
still digital pictures
moving digital pictures or "streaming video" such as DVD downloads to play on the computer
Multimedia sites that combine text, graphics and sound to display on your computer such as revision websites with video and audio clips, games and written tests.
What you need for multimedia
In order for a computer to cope with multimedia, it needs to fulfil certain requirements:
It needs to be powerful enough to display the presentation e.g. a palmtop needs a powerful enough processor to display pictures on its screen and be able to play good quality sound.
A pc needs a reasonable graphics (video) card.
A pc needs a lot of memory - both RAM and hard drive space.
A method of producing reasonable sound (sound card plus speakers on a pc) is needed.
An output interface is needed if motion is to be used e.g. force feedback motion on joysticks to make them shake in games.
Appropriate software to run the presentation is needed eg software that will display the video and sound files properly
Good Luck you guys
Don't freak over ICT.
Just get a good nights sleep
And don't forget to practice past papers

Seriously? We are not allowed to write in bullet points? But I thought that is allowed. I mean I did that for mock exams and still got high marks.
Is it really a must to write in paragraph? Because bullet points are more concise and easier to read.

Oh no please don't do that. It will drain all your energy out. The syllabus has changed so try to solve from 2007 till recently ;) Good luck & know your theory well.
Can somebody please answer my question Is it really a must for us to write in paragraph instead of bullet points? Thanxx

I think its impossible for you to do them 'all'.. im doin from 2006 .. like proper solvin .. n prolly jus goin through the rest with the markscheme in front =P

now there is one problem remaining ......... >>>>>>>> if you take your past papers .... you only can practice on papers from M/J 2007 to O/N 2009 !!! that is not enough is it ??? what to do !!!
I think that's fairly enough :D. To be precise, that's a lot already. As I said, CIE has added in more stuff for ICT syllabus this year so it's compulsory for you to know your theory well, not based your revision on past papers solely.

Yup thanks .. it says
"Avoid giving a list of points as an answer to a question. This is rarely a good answer. Usually you should write linked up sentences for a description or explanation"

i mvr got wat is a fire wall !!!!
cud any 1 xplain me n wat do i need 2 noe abt fire wall
<thou i noe it is som kindof security to ur computer--- but i want further info>
Thanks :) :) :)
A firewall is a device, or a piece of software that is placed between your computer and the rest of the network (where the hackers are!)
If you wish to protect your whole LAN from hackers out on the Internet, you would place a firewall between the LAN and the Internet connection. A firewall blocks unauthorised connections being made to your computer or LAN. Normal data is allowed through the firewall (e.g. e-mails or web pages) but all other data is blocked.

thanx every one

ICT limitations:
Hardware is pushed to its limits:
-Processor speed, disk capacity, bandwidth
-Think about video calls on MSN etc.
Software “bugs” and design flaws:
-Can make a system fail or behave in an unpredictable way
-Systems may be poorly designed and don’t achieve what they set out to do. There are many examples of failure covered in ICT4
Computer output can only be as good as the input

what are the most important subject that i have to concentrate on ? that are most likely to be in 2moroz xzam !!!!!!!!!! :-\

in the ms it's written that the prevention from electrocution is using RCB device but RCD (residual-current device) or RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) makes more sense than RCB maybe it's a typing mistake in the ms !!

Three differences between Internet And Intranet?
-
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks.
but i don't think we have to know this !!
-
1.intranet is used in an single organisation while the internet are used in world wide web.In intranet if me and you want to access the information of any company or university and you can take any example of big organisation so it is not possible to access any information about the company by us.If we want to access the information about any organisation so we first of all athenticate to that company for access the data then you can access the data from an particular organisation.
2.intranet can access the internet but the internet cannot be access the intranet.
3.Intranet provide security to much higher than internet because internet are access by any person from anywhere any anytime but the Intranet can access by only the person of that organisation.

^^ Thx :)
One more :P
Name and breifly describe the most approprate validation check which would be carried out on the bar code number.(3 marks)
I knw its check digit...But i dnt knw how to explain it..So anyone ??
thx
-
one single digit is calculated by the other digits and entered at the end of the number
hope this helps :)
-
can u naame all de cards we need 2 noe abt
credit card-has a magnetic stripe
smart card-has a micro processor
debit card??????
_____ card???
_____ card???
Thanks
-
actually i got a better comparison between internet and intranet
first u got to say what does internet (international network) and intranet (internal restricted access network) stands for
then say what each uses internet uses WAN (wide area network) while intranet uses LAN (local area network)
internet has unlimited amount of information
intranet has limited amount of information
internet users are more vulnerable to viruses and
intranet is better protected from viruses and scams
internet has unlimited access and can be accessed by anyone
intranet has limited access and usually requires a password and username to access it
if searching for information internet can waste time looking through millions of resources and may visit undesirable websites and can be biased or misleading
intranet information is more reliable

Hey you guys, I have a question
For the ICT practical exam
A while back after I did it, my cousin tried to forward to me his exam (after we BOTH already did it), to see if our answers were right, and it didn't work
But it was already 24 hours after the exam
Would something happen to him???
Can't ANYONE help me with this??
-
Can't ANYONE help me with this??
Maybe because ICT practicals were not on the same day but separated days depending on the school and were you live. To stay on the safe side don't do it, but i see that its already too late. But then again, im not really sure but im giving my honest view on the matter at hand.
-
loool dnt worry cie knows that there practical exams are given out each year the papers are stolen and given out to students in most countries and noone can deny that so dnt worry
-
i remember someone asked about blue ray here is a full explanation which gains full marks if asked in exam http://www.igcseict.info/theory/3/optic/index.html

Guys can you please tell me what's the difference between input form and output form .. and how to do both ??
And for the protection rules and all that , i've solved most of the past papers , no questions came about them ... i'm not sure though ...

can anyone pleease describe what hubs, bridges, switches and proxy servers are and what are they used for
pleease reply quickly
thanks
-
ok this is wat i m sur abt for laws part u asked:
DATA PROTECTION ACT
8 principles:
some terms dat u must noe
Data Subject:
This is the person that the data is being collected from or stored about. This could be you!
Data User:
This is any person who needs to access or use the data as part of their job. This could be a secretary who needs to look up your address so that they can send a letter home to your parents. It could be your doctor who needs to know what allergies you have before prescribing you medicine.
Data Commissioner
This is the person who enforces the Data Protection Act.
This is the person that organisations need to apply to in order to gain permission to collect and store personal data.
for laws i wud prefer u 2 go thru this websyt
http://www.teach-ict.com/gcse/theory/dpa/miniweb/pg4.htm
dere r other laws as wel bt i dont noe which ones

can anyone pleease describe what hubs, bridges, switches and proxy servers are and what are they used for
pleease reply quickly
thanks
HUBS: a device dat can have a no. of other devices or compu ters connctd to it usually it has 8-16 ports it does not read any of the packets which arrive frm a compu , but jus sends dem on to all the compus on network including the 1 dat sent it
-
can anyone pleease describe what hubs, bridges, switches and proxy servers are and what are they used for
pleease reply quickly
thanks
A hub is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN.
The typical use of a hub is at the centre of a star network (or as part of a hybrid network) - the hub has cables plugged into it from each computer. A hub is a ‘dumb’ device: if it receives a message, it sends it to every computer on the network. This means that hub-based networks are not very secure - everyone can listen in to communications. Hubs are pretty much obsolete now (you can't buy them any more), having been superseded by cheap switches.A switch, like a hub, is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN.
The typical use of a switch is at the centre of a star network (or as part of a hybrid network) - the switch has cables plugged into it from each computer.
A switch is a more ‘intelligent’ device than a hub: if it receives a message, it checks who it is addressed to, and only sends it to that specific computer. Because of this, networks that use switches are more secure than those that use hubs, but also a little more expensive.
A proxy server is a computer setup to share a resource, usually an Internet connection.
Other computers can request a web page via the proxy server. The proxy server will then get the page using its Internet connection, and pass it back to the computer who asked for it.
Proxy servers are often used instead of router since additional software can be easily installed on the computer such as anti-virus, web filtering etc.
A bridge is a network device that typically links together two different parts of a LAN. Whereas a router is usually used to link a LAN to a WAN (such as the Internet), a bridge links independent parts of a LAN so that they act as a single LAN.
-
can anyone pleease describe what hubs, bridges, switches and proxy servers are and what are they used for
pleease reply quickly
thanks
evn i dnt noe abt bridges????
switches:
it is a more advance peice of network hardware than a hub with a switch , the data from any comp is transmitted to its destination widout congesting the other ports <unlike hubs>.a switch is capable of learnin the addreses frm the data packes which are sent to it from devices connectd to it . it sends the data packets directly 2 its destination

i have this doubt in the ring network it showed in may 2008 that each computer is connected to one another in a loop or ring in which if one breaks the whole network is affected but here it showed that they are connected to a ring cable http://www.igcseict.info/theory/4/topo/ which if any is broken then the whole network is NOT affected so who is correct??

Phased implementation
Phased implementation involves the introduction of the new system one part at a time. Eg: production of invoices is done by the new system while the payroll and processing orders are done by the old one. Step by step each aspect is moved to the new one.
-
it is when u implement the new system stage by stage
so tht u have the new and old systems wrking together
eg u have five sections
1st section u work with the new and the other 4 u work with the old
then when errors are correctd
the 1st and 2nd sections are new
and the 3 others are old

umm guys what's pilot running again ??
pilot running is wen the system is run on trial basis by a small number of users before the whole system is implemented ..
(source : my textbook)
-
running the new sys alongside the old sys but only processing a part of the data ...gradually the work will be transferred to the new system frm the old
<this is wat i learnt 4 pilot running but ppl r changing it to the def of phased implementatn>

ppl help me please
A router is a device that connects together two or more networks. like u right now be using a router .. hub is a device where all the computers or clients are connected together in a network .. like ur school ICT lab may use a hub to connect all the pcs to a hub .. a switch is usually used in place of a hub .. it is more advanced than a hub .. in ways like it sends information to only specific pcs .. this way data is secure but switch costs more .. ;)

good ques to ask for tht reply ..
@ 6394 .. get one thing clear ..
pilot running is wen the system is run on trial basis by a small number of users before the whole system is implemented ..
phased changeover is when parts of the system are implemented a little at a time ..
..

is there any difference By the way magnetic tape and magnetic strip?
I think a lot .. magnetic tape is more like a cassette which hav large volumes of data .. it usually is used as a 'back up' by companies which is conducted overnight ..
magnetic stripe is the thin black stripe found behind ur dad's credit card ;) it contains very small amount of data .. lik bank account number or account details .. i never has the amount of ur dad's bank balance .. so ur dad doesnt need to worry .. lol jus a joke .. dont confuse urself much ok ?? ;) do well best of luck .. =)

Umm not exactly. I mean with pilot running users are interviewed upon implementing the module, fine-tuning takes place before the next ... segment is implemented. Phased changeover does not involve this step ... There is a certain time frame for which bits of the system is scheduled to be implemented, but that's it.

And magnetic tape = Serial access. Also it is used for backing up a large amount of data ... I think magnetic stripe has been replaced by Chip and Pin, no?

can someone pleeeeease explain to me the differences between batch processing, online processing and
real-time processing.
Batch : Data collected over a period of time, processed at one go. Examples include producing utility bills.
Online : Contacts the server computer, updated real time. Examples include booking tickets.
Real time : Responds to input straightaway. Examples include monitoring a patient's condition at a hospital.
-

Real time : Responds to input straightaway. Examples include monitoring a patient's condition at a hospital.
Online = / = instantaneously, whereas real time processing is.

Firewall is a piece of hardware which prevents unauthorised access to a computer system or a computer network .. it 'filters' data passing through it and sends in only the 'good' data .. hacking can be preventing by using a firewall ..
Hardware O.O The filtering bit is inaccurate. Prevents unauthorised access to a computer network would suffice in gaining you 3 / 3.

They won't ask you what the word "bias" means, but instead they may throw you a question and you will have to analyse the pros and cons for students and teachers with the introduction of ICT.
Students
Advantages : Real time information can be found
Vast amount of information
Disadvantages : Time can be wasted if the student does not possess the skills in searching for the information (e.g. using the "site:" parameter in Google Search)
Student may easily get distracted
Teachers
Advantages : Assingments can be uploaded to e-classroom if a student is absent
More challenging assingments can be set
Disadvantages : Greater chance of plagiarism
May be required to retrain - Computing skills
-
what are loyalty cards .. any one know ?

i noe the 8 principles of data protection
BUT now i have a list of some____________*dash* LAWs<read n tel me wat laws are they>
1.all de compu system which processes any personal data must be registered with the data protection register
2.the personal data must not be disclosed 2 any1 outside the department
3.the data subjects have the right to see the information abt dem.
4.individuals are given the right for the compensationwhere they have suffered personal damage thru inaccuracy or loss of personal data
-
what are the different types of accessing?
serial and what else?
can u give me examples as well?
thank u :)
Serial : Records are accessed one by one until a match is found. Examples include magnetic tape.
Direct : The section containing the information is accessed directly without going through one by one. Examples include all magnetic discs.
-
what are loyalty cards .. any one know ?
card given by shops for costumer as a reward for spending a specific amount money in their store so encourages costumers to buy more and provide the shop with information about the costumer

Debit card is a card that you use to retrieve an amount of money from your bank account .. the difference between it and the credit card , is that you take money from the company using the credit card , and giving it back to the company by the end of each month .. and if you don't there will be a fixed intrest rate for late payments.

if the question is 8 marks...usually the last question about advantages and disavantages....
if i answered with 10 or 12 points??will they reject it?

i dnt thnk dey are same:
serial: it is where items are read 1 at a timefrom the physical start of the file in the order which dey r stored .
sequential: it is where items are read 1 at a tym from the logical start of file in key value orders.

They will stop marking the question when they have got full 8 points required, so to play on the safe side you may wish to include one or two extra just in case if you have suggested one advantage / disadvantage that is not ... concrete.
-

if i were you i would write exactly what's required , like 4 adv and 4 this .. and after i finished and if there is still time left , i would add the rest to make sure i get the whole mark , because if you wrote something wrong and added something right , they would over look the wrong and give you the mark
-
what if i give 10 points....only 1 is incorrect...and the other 9 is correct...
will i get full 8 marks??

Yeah but then it does not really matter in IGCSE, like all you need to know are serial and direct ...
-
When we write the adv and this, could we just like write them as points or do we have to write sentences? I think that would make if harder if so.
-

whats a physical start and a logical start? :/
-
thank you 6394 and ziozio for helping me....
-
whats a physical start and a logical start? :/
Physical Start- Start from the first file in the folder/location
Logical Start- Start from the first file in order of logic (I.e. going from A-Z. So files with A first, then B, then C and etc..)

It would be better if you can put them in a sentence, but if you are running out of time it is ok to bullet point!

Hey guys....I asked my teacher If bulleted points to answers are required. and he said its even better ;)

Hey guys....I asked my teacher If bulleted points to answers are required. and he said its even better ;)
Actually CIE don't specify it, so Bullet points and sentences are the same (considering you write what the question asks). But Bullet points are faster and you are less likely to make a mistake.
-
bullet point with a couple of line of explanaitions
for eg
adv of somthin:
1.accurate :concentration is not derived and computers cannot get tired, unlike human,
2.________:...
3________:...
4________:...
disadvantage of something:
1.time taking :time takes to travel n blaahhahahah
2________:...
3________:...
4________:...
conclusion:...

yes it's in the ROM ..
guys fields and records get me confused .. are they the same as columns and rows ?? , if not , what are they ??
Fields is like a feild name basically for example:
Customer Name or Date ( these are feilds)
Record would be "Name Abc" or 27-o5-10 (the data typed in)
Or maybe this would explain better
"The set of data associated with a single object or person is known as a record."
Anyone correct me if m wrng?

but in the book it said that the first row(labels , field names) "ID NAME MOB NO" is the fields , therefore it's three fields
and that the records are the no. of rows under the (label) row , so it would be four..

I advise you not to listen to rumors, not to mention, ICT is a late boomer subject so, im not sure they'll update everything but they may add new weird question in there, but other than that, i don't think so.

You GUYS
The exam is in a few hours
Rather than worrying when everyone else does the exam
Try to relax
You need to be awake for it
So if its midnight somewhere and you guys are awake, you should probably go sleep
Everything is general
We'll all ace this

Hey guys, please don't worry about ICT theory. It's really easy, in fact, it was the easiest paper I've ever done for ICT theory. Good luck :D
-
7mdella, i did perfectly A or A+ Inshallah! :D Good luck to those who still didn't give the exam.
-
yeee relly easiest ever i dnt sink anyone left to take the exam :D
-
Hey but one problem actually :o
Since the ICT paper is really easy, the level of competition for A* will be extremely high. Only the top 10%. I wonder what will the grade boundary for ICT this year will be.
-
ye curvesss are going to beee high to da sky (if it still exists)
-
No, no more curve. The grade boundary for A* will be very very high. As the grade boundary for A* is determined by the lowest score of that 10%. ;)
-
curve is still there! go to this site which is official. it says we will only get ADDITIONAL information.

Well anyways, let shall not discuss about curve right now. We'll all know when the results are out on August 12th ;).
-
Basically they're using percentiles
So yeah, it IS almost the same as the curve
When exactly can we start talking about the exam?
And does anyone know how many points paper 1 , 2, and 3 are?
-

Oh yes.
Paper 1 is out of 100 and it's worth 40% of your grade.
Paper 2 is out of 80 and it's worth 30% of your grade.
Paper 3 is out of 80 and it's worth 30% of your grade.
The mods, can we discuss about ICT theory exam now?

Paper 1 was out of 100, I calculated today during the exam as I got time to kill ... Let's just say that it is an exam which stretches students, but for those who has a good grasp of the concepts, the examination isn't really that hard ...

Just wondering, how can this exam stretch the students? I mean 2 hours are a lot and most people in my school finished it in less than an hour and everybody found it very easy.

Let's just say that the format of the questions that appeared on this paper did not adhere to the previously established pattern ... Oh yes, the format of the questions has changed. In all the past papers, there used to be tons of system analysis & expert system & all that pros & cons of supermarkets, etc. I guess CIE has realised that their questions are too repetitive now and it's time for a change. :D They're sticking back to the basic & more realistic actually.

Agree, can't wait but we don't want to get in troubles by breaking regulations so be patient until the mods give us an OK :D.
MODS, anyone? Can we start discussing now?
Yes, everything was in the syllabus. I think the problem with his friends and to a lot of people was that they assume the questions will be repetitive again so what they did was either solving past papers only or learn from the mark schemes, and did not revise any thing in the syllabus. Some people in my school did that as well.

Rather than using the endorsed textbook as a guide in revision, my friends have decided to read over the marking schemes to past examination papers instead ...

the pH range of saliva is rather large, from 5.0 to pH 8.0
The pH of the stomach is much acidic, around 1-3 (usually 2)
Intestine usually 8
