Which grade is better, IGCSE A* or O level A, how high must an O level person reach to achieve an A star?
-
There is no A* in O Level, A is > 90%, sometimes > 95%, in case the paper is too easy.
What is the range of marks for an A*, IGCSE?
-
@alpha- A* IGCSE is Greater than 90 percentile
-
hey adi, long time no see.

lah, where did you get that?!!!
A= >80% maximum >85%, but usually 80%. varies according to the demand for question papers.
no idea about IGCSE.
and I am talking about CIE GCSE exam.
Cheers
-
Yaaa, sorry, I forgot.
Came back to correct. A> 80%
A is divided into distinctions 1 and 2.
Dist. 1 > 90%; dist. 2 80%-90%.
I was talking only about dist. 1.
Then an A, dist. 1 = A*.
Thank you Borakk & Adi. :)

hey dude!!
yeah...just got busy in a few other things...anyways...this forum seems so much quieter nowadays...not the same as it was during november..that was really cool time..

check these for A LEVEL
HOW TO GET A*
-
A* has also been introduced in CIE GCE 'O Levels' from this November '09 session...keep one thing in mind that now there is no percentile on higher grades in CIE GCE 'O Levels' (like A*, A and B)...percentile will only be for grades C-E...and this scheme will going to be followed in the coming May-June '10 session...so that means if you want to score an A*, you'll have to get marks higher than 90...for A you have to get marks higher than 84...This means that now in GCE 'O Levels', there will be less A* and less students ungraded...
IGCSE is basically for those students who find most of the subjects difficult...and also its marking criteria is a little bit different than that of the GCE 'O Levels'...so I think you should not be comparing these two and in fact just concentrate on whatever you have chosen and try to get good grades...
Wish you best of luck!
-
I disagree with you Dr. EVil, only mathematics is harder, other than that IGCSE is a lot tougher when it comes to economics and other humanitarian sciences. Also among the sciences, like physics, chem and bio, they are at par.
-
I gave GCE o level in 2008 november. There was no A* then. Only A(a) being the highest grade.
-
There is only A. No parts to it, and you get the percentage.
-
DrEvil, for IGCSE, I heard it... But O Levels? A*? Was it applicable for those students taking the exams last year?

Yes, me too.
There is only A. No parts to it, and you get the percentage.
But I did not get the percentage. Just the distinction. Gives you an idea about the percentage.
-
Ok then, then the O levels have changed, and now, you cannot give O levels any more. You can only give IGCSEs.
-
??? Why can't you give O Levels? We give it here. Isn't it a choice made by the Ministry?
-
Around the world from 2010, the O levels will become no more. This was decided by the exam boards.
-
Any link? So that I can check...
-
You ppl are so stubborn...i am talking of November '09 session and u are bringing November '08 session...what kind of an argument is this??
...and if any of ur friends gave any subjects in this November '09 session, better ask 'em...
and also one more thing that O Levels is going no where and no exam board has the authority to decide this until unless the number of candidates become too less that the British Council and CIE cannot make huge profits and they suffer loss...so be patient and as i said just concentrate on ur studies and don't worry abt these boards...
-
Borakk and I did the Nov 09 session. NOTHING was changed to A*. And for all my 8 subjects, I got a distinction 1, > 90%, with an A. There was no A*. Dist. 2, I saw on my friends' result slips were graded A as well.
I don't know if this is true, but some people say that the O Levels are graded A both for dist. 1 & 2 because the papers are more difficult. So that more students get a Grade A in it.
My sister is going to take the O Levels this November, 2010. And NOTHING was said about the grades. Nor was anything said about not having the O Levels. Since years, Mauritians have been attempting the O Level Papers, don't think anything will change now.
-
my bad...well u belong to a different zone...i was talking abt Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Turkey and other 3 minor countries in the zone 4...
-
No worries.
I don't even know in which zone I belong. :)

I as a moderator certify, that after the JAN 2010 session for Edexcel, there will no longer be O levels. So please, do not argue, O levels are no more.

-
now where did the EDEXEL came from???
i was talking abt 'CIE GCE O LEVEL'
-
CIE is very likely to follow. I have contacted CIE about this. Maybe astar can give betr insight.
-
hehe...in the Middle East, forget abt that... :-* :-*

Hey Alpha, I got the full percentage marks for my O level exam just after a few days after getting the provisional result. Just day before yesterday I got % marks for my AS exam too. Not sure why didnt you get it ???
-
Yes yes yes finally confirmed from someone. Its the edexcel who has dropped O levels and decided to conduct only IGCSE. CIE DID NOT DO IT. In our school many students registered for the may june O level exam.
And Alpha yes CIE HAS NOT adopted an A* grade for GCE O levet. Only in cambridge IGCSE there is A* grade.
Congratulations Alpha. Thats an outstanding result! Hope you do good in AS too!
Hehe! I also got for 9 subjects % marks > 90%. And got A(a) grade. Dont know if I got distinction 1. Those who got 85 or 86 also got the same grade.
And for those who are talking about A*: i got 95% in additional maths in november 2008 which was top in the world for that subject. Still I failed to get an A*. This grade has NOT been adopted by CIE.
-
Another confirmation: NO distinction 1 or 2 for us. If somebody gets A(a), thats it. No further hassle. He or she got the toppest grade. Dont know the system adopted by mauritius though. ??? We are in zone 4. Mauritius is probably on zone 3.
-
An Astar at IGCSE is equivalent to a distinction at O level.
-
To be 100% sure that u have gotten an astar, you have to get 95%-100%, even after that if you did not get an astar, there is none.
Stylish, i am so happy for u man, i know how it feels to do very well!

:) Moderators are not members of the Examination Board. By the way, we were talking about CIE. But anyway, didn't know Edexcel had abolished O Levels. Thank you for the info.

We normally do not get them in Mauritius. MES ethics. :( We don't even know yet who topped, maybe end of Feb. :(

Dist.1 is > 90% here, don't know about there.

Thank you for giving an idea about the zone. In Mauritius, we do have distinctions, maybe cause we don't get our results in percentile form.

Ya, that's what I said.

Hey Thanks a million dude! Actually, before the O levels, I was roaming from country to country for some reason. I just landed at BD at 13th and the First exam is at 21st. I didn't even have the commputer coursework done then. Just Imagine!!!
But alhamdulillah all went well. I managed to do the coursework and went through all the exams well!

O level people have to have a greater depth of knowledge, but IG people have to apply the knowledge they gain much more than that of O level people. I had this discussion wid astar, he stuck to his belief of O level, but I had this to say:
O level is ancient, so old that it barely teaches you anything new.
IGCSE applies better, i have seen O level people do badly while i do very well, because they dont know how to apply the concepts
IGCSE thus is not easier.
IGCSE is far more reputed and accepted anywhere nowadays.
you might wanna review all the posts because this topic has been resolved... ::)
we aren't fighting over here over the fact which is better IGCSE or O Levels...we were comparing the grades in both the boards... ;D
if you have done IGCSE and you think you have gained more knowledge than a student doing O levels, good for you...just concentrate on your studies these days because these days are critical due to exams so we'll decide later which is better and which is not... ;) :D
-
huh who was fighting ? + i know that the topic was resolved before i posted tht 1
