Title: Biology Paper 1 help!
Post by: Mastermind on June 04, 2009, 03:31:38 pm
This is a question from Paper 1 2008, May/June:
23 The table shows the amount of water and salt lost from the kidneys and skin on a hot day and on
a cold day. Food and drink intake are the same on both days.

           | water lost from  |   water lost from  |    salt lost from    |   salt lost from
           \ kidneys/dm3      /   skin/dm3          /    kidney/g          /   skin/g
cold day|      1.8            |        0.0            |          20.2         |      0.0
hot day |      0.4            |         2.3           |         14.4          |        5.8

What do these results show?
A) Less water is lost from the kidneys on a cold day than on a hot day.
B)More salt is lost from the kidneys on a hot day than on a cold day.
C) The total amount of salt lost each day is the same.
D) Water is not lost from the kidneys on hot days.

& If you could tell me, why is more water lost in the kidneys on a cold day than on a hot day?
& why is more salt lost from the kidneys on a cold day than on a hot day?

the answer is A because on hot days u need water because most of the water is lost as sweat so the body retains the water for osmoregulation
salts part i dunno

this isnt june.. ive just done june 08..

the answer is C..

as in a hot day the total amount of salt lost is 14.4+5.8= 20.2
and in a cold day its just 20.2 so theyre equal!
good luck m8

the answer is C..add the two salt values to get the same as cold day..on a hot day, more water is lost by sweat..so to prevent dehydration of the body..less water is there in the urine...and for salts..its mainly..negligible or no sweat is produced in cold weather...so when there is sweat..we know that salts are an important part of sweat..so when sweat is produced..some salts are lost through the sweat..and the rest..through the kidney..

Kim..
the denitrfying bacteria just convert the nitrates back into nitrogen so its not good.
and the other one is y chromosome.. cuz alleles can be anything!

Could someone explain this to me?

usually in the gut
cuz then it goes in the liver and the liver reduces the concentration

The alcohol is 1stfound in the hepatic portal vein coming from the small intestine and is broken down in the liver to remove its toxicity! :)

Does anyone know the difference between continous and discontinous variation?? pls!
discontiniuos variation is when u only have a imited amount of possibilities such as blood group or eye colour

continious is when u can have a lot of varieties such as height where a lot of ppl take the middle spot
also weight

gettit?

Does anyone know the difference between continous and discontinous variation?? pls!

continuous variation are characteristics of an organism that are affected by both the genes and the environment but discontinuous variation is shown by organisms when a charcterisitic is affected only by the genes

e.g.continuous-mass,height
discontinuous-lobed ears, blood group, ability to roll tongue
