read all parts marked * in the biology syllabus. the questions will be around that topic only. ;) find some experiments around that topics

hey...i'm kinda confused...to determine dependent &n independent variable...someone can teach me??
one example...let's say in an experiment, we want to know the effect of several solution on size of stomata...we use several solution, and it's said that the concentration needs to be trialled depending on the leaves used(umm...why??)...what's the independent &dependent variable??
Title: Re: biology paper 5
Post by: Drugged Duck on June 04, 2009, 05:25:35 pm
the dependent variable is the dry leaf...as its written in the question...and the independent variable is time...as the time taken for the solution to effect the leaf cant be controlled.
Title: Re: biology paper 5
Post by: SuperSuper on June 04, 2009, 05:49:13 pm
ummm....
why the leaf? and what do you mena by th eleaf? the size?type?

Post by: iz on June 04, 2009, 05:59:39 pm
yeaa but i want to knw wht u guys thnk is gna come..like most probably?..a chi squared test?..respirometer?...or ny type of graphs?.
Title: Re: biology paper 5
Post by: demonrc on June 05, 2009, 05:13:08 am
independent variable is alwas the x axis in the graph...and dependent variable y axis...so whatever ur independent variable is your dependent variable will change accordingly!!

And chi squred jst knw that what if the chi squared value is above ur probality at 0.05% then difference between observed and expected is significant...n if its less its not significant and more due to chance...... ;)

PLANNINGS GNA B HARD!!!!nov 2008.....nt answers tht can b jst guesd at a time like tht!!!

Post by: ruletheworld on June 05, 2009, 05:32:37 am
dude i think ur wrong abt the chi square...
if the value lies in the range ABOVE 0.05 it is said the the difference is not significant and the null hypothesis is accepted
while if it is below 0.05, the chance that the difference is caused by random error is only 5% so the null hypothesis is rejected...and we get that the difference is caused by a certain factor other than experimental error.

Title: Re: biology paper 5
Post by: demonrc on June 05, 2009, 06:15:08 am
well dude u bta check up the cie bio text book.........it says tht if it is greater the difference is significant....n less meanin mre due to chnce n it is not significant

A  s= 2.23, SM =.1.58;;
B  s= 2.49, SM = 0.79;;

did u get the ans?
Title: Re: biology paper 5
Post by: 1510 on June 05, 2009, 08:18:23 am
hey even cie book says the same....if the probability obtained is greater than 0.05 (5%)...which includes 0.1 ,0.2..this means it is not significant(due to chance) and if we get a probability that is less than 0.05 it means its significant(not due to chance)....this the the chi square test....if its the t-test....if the value obtained is greater than the critical value it is significant.......
Title: Re: biology paper 5

if the value obtained is greater than the critcal value it is less than o.05?

hey so i just found out watde heck chi square  implies nd id like 2 share it wid u guyz hope tis not too late
the probability shows us to wat degree it is by chance. this means dat out of 100 ppl 5 ppl are having it by chance
so if the chi square value is more than 0.05 tis due to chance
if it is less than 0.05 it is significant
gonna go now for de exam starts in an hour
BEST OF LUCK!!! ;)

Post by: SuperSuper on June 05, 2009, 11:01:04 am
i'm super super sorry...i can't tell...no
but if your friend can do the P4 test
i guarantee he/she'll do just fine in this one
again no need to worry..
this paper is only 15% of the total score
and last year threshold for A is only 18 out of 30
it's not that hard to reach..
just tell your friend to think clearly...because again..the question is not complicated
u only need to really really understand the question before u answer anything..

The degree of freedom was one!!
Two pH values were tested, so 2-1=1!!!!

RIGHT?!  :o :'(

degree of freedom for t test is (n-1)+(n-1) right? with n=no of data for 1 ph. so the ans is 38.

degrees of freedom is 38.....total 40 taken..its a t test thts caried out..not chi squared...for t test degrees of freedom is n-2
