Title: Maths C3 Help Please, this function stuff is killing me!

Its not my answer, its whats written in the marking scheme, but I have no idea what the link is between the question and answer, or the steps taken to get the answer. Any help would very much appreciated...

$f(x)=\frac{2(x-1)}{(x-3)(x+1)}-\frac{1}{x-3}=\frac{1}{x-3}[\frac{2(x-1)}{x+1}-1]=\frac{1}{x-3}[\frac{2x-2-x-1}{x+1}]=\frac{1}{x-3}[\frac{x-3}{x+1}]=\frac{1}{x+1}$
