Title: Mnemonic for electrolysis
Post by: thukon on May 30, 2009, 10:10:06 am
Does anyone know a good mnemonic for the preference order for ions to be discharged in electrolysis?
A mnemonic is like an acronym for those who dont know.
Any chemistry mnemonics are actually welcome, especially the reactivity series ones.

AND WHY IS MY REP -8??????!!!!!!!!

they arent any, electolysis is used for many stuff, each one cant possible have an mnemonic, u just have to learn it the hard way :/

yeah but theres an order kind of like the reactivity series for which ions are given out and which ones stay in the electrolyte.

here:
for cations reactivity series:
please-K
send-Na
cats-Ca
monkeys-Mg
and-Al
zebras-Zn
in-iron
large-lead
hired-H
cages-Cu
make-Hg
sure-Ag
padlocked-platinum

for anions:
someone -sulphate
only-hydroxide(gives oxygen on oxidation)
nice-nitrate
cleans-chloride
broken -bromide
items-iodide

for crude oil fractions:
please-petroleum gases
never - naphtha
kill-kerosene
dolphins-diesel oil
living-lubricating oil
bravely-bitumen

for litmus paper, here's how i avoid confusion:
            Be right back
    blue-red-blue
  blue-red(acid)  red-blue(base)

for solubilities,
PCB for sulphates (Pb-lead,Ca-calcium,Ba-barium)

i know some ppl who get confused with the electrodes; so here's 1

PANIC

Positive Anode Negative Is Cathode

Cool, but the electrodes are already kinda embedded in my head, because i did a course in roots, and the prefix cat- means negative.

AHHHH WAIT A SECOND!!! MY BOOK SAYS THAT HYDROXIDE IS DISCHARGED AFTER NITRATES
So ill remember it as Someone Nice Only Cleans Broken Items.

Theres another 1 to remember the fractions

Rolling------Refinery gas
Guns-------Gasoline
Nearly------Naphtha
Killed-------Kerosene
Drunk-------Diesel oil
Funny------Fuel oil
Limping-----Lubricating oil
Robber------Residue

here's another one ... i usually get confused in whether oxidation occurs at cathode or electrode, so, i keep in my mind the 5th letters, like:

 oxidAtion - Anode
 reduCtion - Cathode

@thukon- yesss hydroxide is discharged in preference!!! thanx for reminding,so now it is some1 nice only cleans broken items ;D

thanks. funny stuff's always easier to remember

dunno if ull know this(very common way of learning redox) but it's easy to remember

OILRIG

Oxidation Is Loss(of electrons) Reduction Is Gain(of electrons)

yeah oilrig is popular.

AHHH Angell, u edited 12345abc's post wrong. Its someone NICE ONLY cleans broken items. Not someone ONLY NICE cleans broken items.

yea...theres one mor way....sum might find this easy.. ;D
RED CAT and AN OX
(Reduction at Cathode and Oxidation at Anode)

Loss of electrons

Reduction
Is
Gaining of electrons
