sweetsh, u mean this article was given to the centres by Edexcel, that means the Edexcel Centre??? But when I went to apply for the exam fees, the application has stated that the scientific article will be released to the private student as well as those who go to school on the 22nd of may, because unit 5 exam starts on 22nd of June. It is quite strange , right???

Just don't make a big deal out of nothing. I don't know about private candidates but all I know they are released pretty early before exams.
So just use it to read it and prepare for it.
Thanks

Salaam all,
The article seems very interesting. I see it being linked to topic 1 (lifestyle, health and risk) of unit 1. However, one way or the other, it is linked to all the four theory units.
Here are a few tips for the article section of the unit 5 exam:
I suggest read it a couple of times first to allow it to sink in. Get two copies of the article.
If English is not ur first language and u do not understand the meanings of any word(s) within the article, do find out what the word(s) mean. They might be barriers to ur understanding of the article.
Make up your own 'question bank' to test your understanding. Use questions from the other sources as well and test your understanding with them.
Make up your own glossary of key terms with definitions of scientific terms in the article.
Do not forget to thoroughly revise the AS units and unit 4 as well.
Find out what areas of the ur A/L spec r woven into the article and do not forget to revise those concepts thoroughly along with any other concepts that seem relevant.
Use highlighters to highlight key concepts.
Read the article frequently. You might not understand everything on the article after reading it for the first time. So do read it frequently and try to find links to concepts u already know. You might also understand a new thing u might not hav before everytime u read it.
Use google and wikipedia to get more information on unfamiliar contexts mentioned frequently in the article. This might not be asked for in ur exam but this might help u to link ur A/L concepts in the context of the article.
Remember, this is a scientific article so make sure u can explain the facts within the article using ur A/L knowledge and concepts where possible. You might also need to use knowledge and concepts from more than one specification unit to explain ideas.
Learn any relevant GCE Biology definitions and be strict with urself when u do so.
Summarise the article under headings and sub-headings to demonstrate to yourself how well u hav understood the scientific content of the article. Moreover, this will force u to bring ideas given in different parts of the article under one sub-heading using bullet-pointed lists.
The last but the most important one - UNDERSTAND, UNDERSTAND, UNDERSTAND. If u do not understand the scientific article and simply read it for the sake of reading it or rely on ur teachers fully to help u understand it, then it won't work. Once u understand it, u can ask ur teacher to give u questions for practice. But understand it for urself frst.
If you have any specific doubts, do not hesitate to ask me.

Can i get some sample question for june 2012 artical?
Try making up questions for yourself. Or let us all post possible questions to get started. I will start:
On the last line of paragraph 52 on page 8 of the Scientific Article, there is a statement about the number of women dying because of HIV/AIDS. Explain how the disease caused by HIV has a sequence of symptoms that may result in death.
On paragraph 3 of page 1 of the article, there's a statement : "Obesity is defined as a surplus of body fat which is detrimental to health. This fat, or white adipose tissue (WAT), is located underneath the skin and around the internal organs and stores excess energy in the form of triglycerides."
Describe the structure of a typical fat molecule. Support your answer with a diagram of the fat molecule.
On paragraph 3 of page 1 of the article, there's a statement: "WAT located around the abdomen (giving rise to the ‘apple’ body shape) is considered more dangerous than fat stored around the hips and thighs as it is strongly correlated with type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer."
- Explain what is meant by a correlation
- Explain the difference between a correlation and causal relationship
- Explain why WAT located around the abdomens is dangerous for the heart
- Describe and explain what may lead to obesity
On paragraph 8 of page 1 of the Scientific Article, there's this statement: "Neuroscientists at Brigham Young University in Utah examined subconscious feelings about body image through fMRI analysis of the brains of healthy men and women who were assessed psychometrically as being confident with their bodies."
- Describe and explain how functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans can be used to investigate brain structure and function.
- There's another imaging technique called Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Describe and explain how Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can be used to investigate brain structure and function.
Compare MRI and fMRI scans.
I made these questions myself but I am not sitting for this exam. Hope you find them useful. And use your knowledge and understanding to answer them.
-
^'Explain the difference between a correlation and causal relationship'
Mind answering it?

^'Explain the difference between a correlation and causal relationship'
Mind answering it?
Oh no, I don't mind. But I will give the answer tomorrow. Is it ok?
-
^'Explain the difference between a correlation and causal relationship'
Mind answering it?
I guess this means the cause and correlation
"Correlation does not imply causation"
Correlation means that two variables correlate together but they they do not cause each other. Hence none of them is dependent on the other. (So you can put any of them on any of the axis when drawing a graph)
Cause is when a variable cause the another. Hence A causes B or A causes B. Where one is called "independent" the other is "dependant".For example, the light intensity and rate of photosynthesis; the increase in light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis.. So the light intensity is on the x-axis while the rate is on the y-axis

Thank you to all. please post more questions

Thank you to all. please post more questions
These were just self-made questions by me. Try making questions for yourself - it will help your understanding.

In paragraph/line 3...they have mentioned "type2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer"...they could ask us sumthing like a cause and correlation question....
even symptoms/risks of heart disease, type2 diabetes cud be asked!
....a general question on other risk factors of heart disease =P refering to unit1 studies!
wats thin media images?..and paragraph 7..cud any1 explain :S....
it wud be much appreciated if u all discuss watever concepts/points ur eye can relate to the units! so we all can revise those points and ace it together (Y) iA! :D

any progress here?
more questions please? :P

ethical issues of DBS?
Can worsen conditions of diseases if not placed in the right area of brain, not 100% guaranteed to work, costly?, only available to patients with severe conditions.
why/how does parkinsons cause tremors and involuntary movement?
Parkinsons disease results in death of dopamine secreting neurones in the basal ganglia, which normally release dopamine in motor cortex. Therefore the motor cortexes are not able to recieve dopamine which leads to loss of control of movement and tremors.
list shortcomings of levedopa and drug-telated treartment?
advantages of DBS over other treatments?
Do not have to take tablets, can be calibrated for optimum results
describe and explain side effects of DBS?
apathy (emotions become supressed), hallucinations, compulsive gambling,
hypersexuality, cognitive dysfunction (loss of intellectual functions), and depression (I assume it disrupts Serotonin levels?)
Explain ( in short detail) how DBS works to traet brain disorders?
DBS sends high frequency electrical impulses to specific areas to interfere with brain activity (passing of impulses through motor neurones) and regain some control.
Explain why DBS can be used to treat a multitude of disorders?
The lead for DBS can be placed at different areas of brain according to different symptoms

http://edexcelbiosolutions.com/
did anyone come across this website ?
has anyone purchased this pdf file ?
-
I haven't used that website before but I think the best questions and answers are by Examwizard(for edexcel). They can be found for all science AS and A2 on thies website. Hundreds of questions per unit thousands per subject. Comes with answers. Very similar to past papers, some are from past papers. It is by edexcel and they sell it at 200 pounds per subject, but you can get it free here.

Hey all, paper 5 exam is a week from today and I have just heard about this scientific article. Do you think I'm too late, or is there still time to study the article and scrutinize it well? and how long will it take to study it?
