The unit 5 biology aricle for 2012 has come out so I created this thread for any discussions so we can share info and resources eg.

-linking concepts in our syllabus to information and processes in the article

Since this years article is well organised into short,numbered paragraphs, another use ful thing is to summarise, fill in gaps and link to our syllabus for each paragraph or topic(at the top of the page).

InshaAllah, so will all of you. I can help you guys with the questions. Don't rack your brains too much cos the questions are always more or less the same. At least now that I am thru, I can guess the kind of questions they're going to ask. Just want to help :) The problem is people usually have tend to fear the 'sensationalized' article. Anyways, erm, you know, since you've got the hard copy, you can ask your school teacher to give you the soft copy. Could you? Cos as of now, the file is going to be password protected. Only the schools, centers to be more precise, can access those files via their password. Haha, but you see, we're the SF pack. I am sure someone or the other is going to get the file and put it up here for all of us :D
So I guess we're going to have to hold our horses back :D. Lets see for a week and if still no one turns up, then you could scan and upload it :)

i dont have a scanner anyone who has please post the article. Meantime anyone with material from their teachers or school should post it up. important sections of the book to focus in is 8.4 and know all abt parkinsons. Also, think of ethical issues and side effects and other limitations of DBS. That's what my teacher told me, at least.

This session's article seems very informative and the concepts are presented visually, summarised into key points where necessary and some photographs as well as tables hav been included where necessary to support ur understanding. I think u all will hav fun studying the article.
I suggest read it a couple of times first to allow it to sink in. Get two copies of the article.
If English is not ur first language and u do not understand the meanings of any word(s) within the article, do find out what the word(s) mean. They might be barriers to ur understanding of the article.
Find out what areas of the ur A/L spec r woven into the article and do not forget to revise those concepts thoroughly along with any other concepts that seem relevant.
Use highlighters to highlight key concepts.
Read the article frequently. You might not understand everything on the article after reading it for the first time. So do read it frequently and try to find links to concepts u already know. You might also understand a new thing u might not hav before everytime u read it.
Use google and wikipedia to get more information on unfamiliar contexts mentioned frequently in the article. This might not be asked for in ur exam but this might help u to link ur A/L concepts in the context of the article.
Remember, this is a scientific article so make sure u can explain the facts within the article using ur A/L knowledge and concepts where possible. You might also need to use knowledge and concepts from more than one specification unit to explain ideas.
Learn any relevant GCE Biology definitions and be strict with urself when u do so.
Summarise the article under headings and sub-headings to demonstrate to yourself how well u hav understood the scientific content of the article. Moreover, this will force u to bring ideas given in different parts of the article under one sub-heading using bullet-pointed lists.
The last but the most important one - UNDERSTAND, UNDERSTAND, UNDERSTAND. If u do not understand the scientific article and simply read it for the sake of reading it or rely on ur teachers fully to help u understand it, then it won't work. Once u understand it, u can ask ur teacher to give u questions for practice. But understand it for urself frst.
P.S. This article seems to be linked more strongly to Topic 8 of Unit 5. Do not forget to learn the ethical issues related to experimenting on animals as well as the main imaging techniques used to diagnose brain disorders, tumours and to identify the main location and extent of damage caused to the brain due to strokes, injuries etc.

I am doing Edexcel A/L. I am doing edexcel A/L self studying as well as self teaching presently..
May I know are you doing A/L in school or privately???
May I know which unit of which subjects are the easiest???
I am doing chemistry, physics and biology only.. What about you?? Is self studying a good method or is attending group class a good method??

No dear, i haven't found any yet. Try searching again later and do keep a look at the TSR site. You can create a discussion thread at TSR site as well.
Meanwhile, keep revising the A/L spec. areas woven into the article and also try linking the various concepts in the article.
Create a question bank urself to help test ur understanding and try other questons as well.

to predict which line , you have to predict a question for that line so might as well have a set of Q&A stating which line for which question just like in edexcel examination

I am inshAllah going to post a file that's going to contain all those questions which, imo, are liable to be asked. If not questions, at least it's going to have notes on what you should learn be thorough with for this part of the exam.

1) Be thorough with everything about Parkinson's disease –cause, effects, possible treatments etc.
Things you should know: Substantia Niagra, loss of neurotransmitter dopamine as loss of the cells that produce it, loss of axons that spread thru the brain stem, frontal cortex and spinal cord, symptons (memorise from textbook)
How DBS actually works: it sends electrical impulses for stimulation—imitates the natural process of stimulation but electrically, that is to say that there is no depolarization but a rather direct stimulus. Say for example, in Parkinson's, we don't have the cells that produce dopamine and the axons for the production and conduction of impulses, hence the muscles
2) Learn about Levodopa
3) How depression is caused? Learn everything about depression
4) Process of carrying out tests with DBS
Ans: group of people with the same disease taken. Same age, gender, nationality, culture, mass, height etc.
I am sorry I couldn't go thru the entire article so this is all I could come up with. Romeesa, you got something to help them with?? I've been trying to look for the member who had uploaded such a useful pdf and it contained all the possible questions that could be asked from our article (June 2011)...I forgot who she is...Anyways, the rest of you who're inshaAllah going to sit for this paper, how is your preparation?

Edit: Sorry for the misinformation. I didn't notice that it asks for a username and password. Actually, there wasn't a unit 5 exam in january 2010 but unit 5 exams started in june 2010. I got 98% in the unit 5 exam and I assure you, you don't need to study other exam articles thoroughly. What you can do is just read/go through the past exam articles and check what type of questions are asked in relation to them (notice even questions relating to the practical work, i.e. core practicals, might be asked in the article questions). Study your exam article thoroughly and understand it very well. Then you can make up your own 'question bank' to test your understanding. Use questions from the other sources as well and test your understanding with them. Make up your own glossary of key terms for scientific terms in the article. Also do not forget to thoroughly revise the AS units and unit 4 (about half of the questions in my unit 5 article question were from the previous units).
