Fermentation is the process by which glucose is changed by yeast ( through anaerobic respiration) to ethanol and carbon dioxide. It is an exothermic reaction where heat is produced .....

PLEASE can someone send me the old pastpapers of bio to

any tips on how to draw graphs ( columnar )...and how to label the axis??

Jason they usually tell u what to put in both axes. Try to plot the points as accurately as possible. Your lines should not be thick!! The scale has to be suitable and occupies 3/4 of the graph paper (Don't take a scale which is too small cuz u will end up having a small graph and so marks are deducted!!)

That's it!! It becomes pretty easy with practise!

What do you mean by breaking an axis?? and how do you do it??
Do you alwayz have to use only even numbers when numbering the axis?? or will odd numbers do??

Its better to use multiples of 2,3,4,5 and 10, 20 but not of 15 or 16 on your axis...Also when drawing the line of your graph you can match your points straight with a ruler instead of a curve..like a straight line from point 1 to point 2 then another line from point 2 to point 3 and onwards

I don't think that's true. I hope it isn't. These exams don't serve their purpose then.....everyone with the paper will score well but the one's who sincerely work hard won't earn accolades. Not fair. Many knew abt the ICT practical papers too. It's so not fair for the ones who didn't know. I don't like cheating and don't like to see other's doin' it.

Yes cheating in the IG's is seriously unfair and i still dont understand how its possible for it to be leaked..

for the different formats of graphs in paper 6 biology::

(a) Graphs

(i) The independent variable should be plotted on the x-axis (horizontal axis) and the
dependent variable plotted on the y-axis (vertical axis).
(ii) Each axis will be labelled with the physical quantity and the appropriate unit, e.g.
time / s.
(iii) The graph is the whole diagrammatic presentation. It may have one or several
curves plotted on it.
(iv) Curves and lines joining points on the graph should be referred to as 'curves'.
(v) Points on the curve should be clearly marked as crosses (x) or encircled dots ( ).
If a further curve is included, vertical crosses (+) may be used to mark the points.

(b) Pie Charts
These should be drawn with the sectors in rank order, largest first, beginning at 'noon'
and proceeding clockwise. Pie Charts should preferably contain no more than six
sectors.

(c) Bar Charts
These are drawn when one of the variables is not numerical, e.g. percentage of
vitamin C in different fruits. They should be made up of narrow blocks of equal width
that do not touch.

(d) Column Graphs
These are drawn when plotting frequency graphs from discrete data, e.g. frequency of
occurrence of leaves with different numbers of prickles or pods with different numbers
of seeds. They should be made up of narrow blocks of equal width that do not touch.

(e) Histograms
These are drawn when plotting frequency graphs with continuous data, e.g., frequency
of occurrence of leaves of different lengths. The blocks should be drawn in order of
increasing or decreasing magnitude and they should be touching.

like temperature and time taken for starch break down for example;

the time taken depends on the temperature.......as temp increase time decrease......

u know wt i mean......the time will change when the temp change not the opposite.....so the time taken is dependent and the temp is independent

thats the " time " wt i said was the " time taken ".......

the first one is like the volume vs time >> here the time in independent so it is on the x-axis.......because the volume of a certain gas (for e.g) will increase as time passes

but the second one.......the time taken for starch to be broken down by enzymes will depend on the temp......as the temp increase the starch will be broken down in less time

sorry the size is pretty big of the scan

a doubt
they have mentioned like this in the markscheme..

O orientation of axes;
A both axes labelled + units;
S even scale;
P plotted correctly;
L line of best fit or ruled line point to point;

WHY NOT A CURVE? :@:@:@::@:@:@:

Its what the biology examiners prefer...my teacher went to some cambridge conference and they told her there so its better to have a ruled line as its more accurate than a retrded curve :P

Look its better to have all points together by a rule as its always in the marking scheme so always do the point to point thing.

and for the histogram and bar graph i photocopied a part of my notes and a past paper answer..hope you understand ..oh and column graph and bar graph are the same things.

For the Leaves question i sorta lost a mark for not spacing then i redrew the whole thing as you leave a space because the spot thing is discontinous and it HAS to be equal thickness of the bar and even spacing. :)

LOL good ;)...scales depend on the readings like if they're close to multiples of 4 then use these multiples on the axis and if they give you a short line that doesnt fill up the graph divide the multiples to 2..sorry sorta hard to explain it but try a question and it wont seem that hard while thinking about this, and just remember dont use hard scales like of 15 or 16 or 26 use easy ones.

i only heard
multiples of 1, 2, 5 and 10

so eventually 20 will also be allowed..

but sometimes, they show in examiners report, about ppl using 2.5 and 3
that confuses me

then they even show even no, while i use 5.
that also confuses me.

I went through the graph you posted and you haven't done it right, it looks like you were in a hurry apparently? Because we had to plot the distance horiztonally firstly, then look at its readings ..they sorta go like 25 29 36.2 which is alot like 25, 30, 35 but you can't start from 25 as its a multiple of 5 it must start from 5 (because if the first number is 25 then the next value is 50)and the point that is the origin it is better to keep it 0,0 , so therefore it goes like 0,5,10. Okay now thats cleared you check that this way does your final number fit in and you count till the end of the axis and he last number is 70 but our final is 50 so it fits and it is not alot of difference so its cool..and by even scale they mean like you dont wanna go 6 to 13 to 45 they mean multiples of something like from 2 to 4 to 6 and so it can even be 5.
I solved the question you can check the whole thing out, any other doubts feel free to ask :P

:S:S:?????????????????

this is written in examiners report

Most candidates attempted to plot an accurate line graph with the values for the surface area of the
model fruit in cm³ on the x-axis and the distance travelled/cm on the y- axis. Some candidates
used a ruled line point to point and others a line of best fit. Either of these methods was acceptable
providing that the line was accurately drawn. The scale caused problems for candidates. The
range of values for the surface area of fruit increased by 32 cm² for each set of repeated values of
distance travelled and an even scale was required. If this range started from 30 cm² (instead of
0 cm²) and used one mm square to represent 2 cm² an even scale filled the printed grid. The
vertical scale for the mean distance travelled in cms for a value of 0 or 25 to 50 cm an even scale
could be used to fill the printed grid.

by the way, nice handwriting

Gosh yes didnt think about 32 :-\ so yea then your right but isn't it much more complicated this way starting with a dif number :S I mean if you change the Y axis scale to 32 64 96 128 160 its really much better and but starting with 0 makes it easier, though i noticed you depend too much on ms, go through it but dont chnge your answer exactly according to it i mean my way is partially wrong :P but if i chnge axis its cool and they said it is okay if you put distance travelled on y axis not that you have to so if a question does come be sure you put the ones on the axis they ask just in case ;) also they say you can draw the point to point method so thats answers your prev question :)

Your scale for y axis distance is good but the x axis division isnt correct and if done right it should be 25 when 5 small blocks later 30 and on, but i'd prefer using 32 mltiples for surface area and 5 mltpl for distance as your 1 point shows that its 25 and 30 and sorta doesnt make sense :s So to fix your graph change the 30 value in the start to 25 as it starts your y axis and so its the same(it has to be) and continue on with it like 5 blocks later 30 then 5 blocks later 35, and in the place you wrote 50 write 35, do i make sense? :-\

students who are bad in drawing or cant draw in proportion properly, or are looking out for easy alternatives make their own ways to draw
i dont know how, what how when ..
but this makes them easier to draw big and that to in proportion easly.

to magnify, my teacher recommended us to first, draw lines on the object you need to draw in the exam paper. then, measure all these lines. multiply the lengths by 2. now, draw one of these lines. measure the angle on the original object between the line you just drew and any other line, and use this to draw your second line on the image, using the same angle as the object. continue like this to get a diagram magnified by 2.

all ur doing is turning all the main features into lines, so that you can magnify by exactly 2. then, after they're lines, you add on the extra details (eg legs on top of lines). the lines should be real thin, ie, should be erasable very easily, light lines. the drawing on top of this should be much thicker. also, having lines helps you measure angles between structures and so make better drawings..

its easy... you use lines to represent things like body and stuff, then multiply them by 2 (their length) and u get the length it should be in the drawing, so u draw it, then measure angles to see where the next line should go, instead of approximating it,...

it doesnt take too long, maybe 5/6 minutes per drawing..

can u just show a part, i mean just a small part of a diagram. in paint or something or scan.   [2 lines and 1 angle]
i get confused when u mention a line.

yes, this is what i mean, but the lines are in the wrong position. they should be in the center of the leg... know what i mean? the line should run down the scenter, not down the side...

[img=http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3315/indexphp.th.png] (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=indexphp.png)
you have to measure the angle between D1 and D2, between D2 and D3, D2 and D5, D5 and D6, the length where D5 meets D6, where D1 meets D2. all that... i forgot D4... and the lines on the body are just to give u an idea of how u would take lines for the body...

see in a fruit the ovary becomes the fruit and ovules become the seed. There is no cotelydon as such of the fruit(the flesh is called mesocarp). But there r different parts of the fruit which u can learn at http://www.fruitsinfo.com/parts_of_fruits.htm
Hope that helps clear ur  befuddled brain

Title: Re: Biology Paper 6!!
Post by: nid404 on May 17, 2009, 05:55:57 pm
not exactly......i might have to do some medicine here and there to be a wildlife conservationist.  I need loads of degrees apart from the normal zoology and stuff to be an expert(which I want to be)......ya so that's that. Love animals soooooooo much.I love Jeff Corwin's show on animal planet....follow it regularly and so badly miss Steve Irwin(kudos to him)....really appreciate what he did for conservation of wildlife.

Steve Irwin the legend.
It would be great if that accident wouldn't have happened.  :'( :'(
Even though i watch animal planet rarely, still i use to know him very well, he is that famous.

hey!!!! i'm drowning in past papers and notes! and i haven't found anything to help me in understanding what exactly is the formula for magnification, thts if there is a formula.. can anyone please help me know what exactly i must do when there is a question tht asks me to see how many times something has been magnified??
Title: Re: Biology Paper 6!!
Post by: twilight on May 17, 2009, 11:13:42 pm
magnification = enlarged drawing/real drawing
Title: Re: Biology Paper 6!!
Post by: LaRi on May 17, 2009, 11:15:56 pm
yes i know that, but there is a question that i saw last night while i was gng thru some past papers, and there was a magnified picture of a pollen grain and underneath it there was a question asking us to calculate the real size of the pollen grain and by how many times it has been magnified, thts wat i wanna knw, hw can i calculate magnification? :S
Title: Re: Biology Paper 6!!
Post by: twilight on May 17, 2009, 11:22:05 pm
measure the diameter of the pollen grain that is magnified .. using ur ruler
then divide this by the real size to get magnification
u can attach the question paper .. i'll go thru it and tell u

Post by: LaRi on May 17, 2009, 11:38:23 pm
oh ok!!!!!!! nw i get it! Thanks a lot hey :)
and umm one more thing, what exactly is a fair test? and a control? i never seemed to understand exactly what they r?

http://www.freeexampapers.us/IGCSE/Biology/CIE/2005%20Jun/0610_s05_qp_6.pdf

this is the paper am currently solving, everything is fine except question 2]d]i) and 3]a]ii)

i solved question 2]c]i) like you told me, and my answer was 0.024 mm = actual size

can u plz go thru it and tell me if its right? :)

Thanks a lot By the way :)

can someone tell me what is single cell protein (SCP) ????

I cant really understand it and what is its function?

help would be much appreciated!!

 ??? ???

Title: Re: Biology Paper 6!!
Post by: sanity_master on May 18, 2009, 08:48:21 am
single cell protein:

bring bacteria and allow them to grow and reproduce asexually in a bioreactor while providing them with the suitable needed nutrients and the conditions......they will increase greatly in number.....as their bodies is formed of 70% protein....they are dried out of the food stock and crushed then sold to be a food full of protein......there are advantages and disadvantages::

ADV:

1.low fat content.
2. suitable to vegetarians
3. no food additives
4. cheaper than meat

this:

1.unattractive appearance or taste
2. people dont like the idea of eating microorganisms

thats pretty much it

ill ask about bio paper 3 l8er. Right now ppl should be asking about paper 6. I have a question. Usually they ask you to draw a labeled and enlarged image of some organism that they give u a pic of. HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO KNOW THE PARTS? I did one paper where they ask you to draw a labeled image of an apple. Theres one more where they ask you to draw a labeled image of a slug. I mean... HOW? We havent learned the parts and theyre not in my textbook. Any enlightenment?
