Title: Calculators allowed in Math exam
Post by: NotAbod on April 20, 2011, 06:04:47 pm
which calculator is allowed in math 0580 IGCSE exam??
fx-991ES or fx-85ES  ??
if both of them are allowed, then choose the two options (in the poll)
our math teacher said that we cant use fx991ES, so i just want to make sure.

Take whatever calc you want into the exam. Just make sure it isnt a graphic calculator and dont go asking around if your calculator is allowed.

Anyways, you're marked according to the workings and not simply a correct answer.

No one is going to check.

As long as you DON'T bring in a graphic calculator you'll be fine.

Also, I doubt any of those calculators has the potential for solving algebraic equations.

fx 991es can solve quadratic equations.
and equations of the form:
anX + bnY + cnZ = dn
anX + bnY= cn
ax^3 + bx^2 + cx +d = 0

ax^3 + bx^2 + cx +d = 0

And no one needs to know that....

yes good idead to WASTE ur time checking each and every answer with the calculator.
Check twice dude or maybe thrice, np u will solve 50% of the paper correct, and u won't solve the other half cuz time will be over.
Advice: trust urself don't waste time checking ur answeres, and when u finish the paper, u can check ur answers with calculator.
991ES is not allowed in AS/A.

checking all ur answers WHILE SOLVING is just a waste of time, better to recheck ur paper after u finish it

i solve every question and revise it once before moving to the next one and i take from 1:30 - 1:40 or so.and when i revise i mean that i revise the whole working i did,and is it really not allowed,i dont think they would check for the calculator

991ES is not allowed in AS/A.

991 ES is allowed. Some of my friends used it in their maths exam (A/AS level).

It depends on personal preference, but I tend to check my answers instantly after solving each question because it is quicker. Most of the time, using this approach, I will have very little spare time after answering the question paper. But it works better for me.

2: cmplx
3: stat
4: base-n
5:eqn
6:matrix
7: table
8: vector
which modes are not allowed?

Due to the sheer number of different calculator models available worldwide, Cambridge cannot confirm which models are permitted in our exams and which are not.

Where the use of calculators is allowed in examinations, calculators used must not be able to manipulate algebra, they must be purely numerical integration/differentiation. Calculators with any of the following facilities are prohibited, unless specifically stated otherwise in the syllabus:

    graphic display
    data banks
    dictionaries or language translators
retrieval or manipulation of text or formulae
    QWERTY keyboards
    built-in symbolic algebraic manipulations
    symbolic differentiation or integration
capability of remote communication with other machines.

Cambridge will regard the use of any such calculator as malpractice. Students requiring more information should contact the exams officer at their school.
