Most probably they did not answer what the question asked.
For example: Describe several methods of market segmentation.
In this question, you'll have to describe different methods - segmentation according to demographic area, religious beliefs, income, occupation etc.
You would get no marks for mentioning the definition of market segmentation, describing the marketing mix or describing anything else. Straight 0 if you do not exactly answer what the question asked.
This is the most common mistake which good and bad students alike do and for which, they are penalised heavily.

No. A student will get marks in the lower threshold if he/she does not answer what the question asks. If this pattern is repeated over many questions, it is very easy to get an U in the exam.

so far are there any complaints that the edexcel marking is unfair?

Interesting: :D http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Examiner+fails+in+Edexcel+unfair+dismissal+tribunal.-a097290494 (http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Examiner+fails+in+Edexcel+unfair+dismissal+tribunal.-a097290494)
Examiner fails in Edexcel unfair dismissal tribunal.
An examiner who claimed that he lost his job with an examination board after criticising his employers attitude to marking yesterday failed in his attempt to bring an action for unfair dismissal.
An employment tribunal sitting in Norwich ruled that retired headmaster John Mead, aged 66, of Cromer, Norfolk, was not legally an employee of the examination board Edexcel and therefore not entitled to launch an unfair dismissal case. Edexcel severed links with Mr Mead in June 2002 barely two weeks after he had complained that he was being asked to mark down GCSE history candidates.
Mr Mead, a history paper examiner since 1988, said he had been told that if too many candidates were regraded on appeal it would reflect badly on Edexcel.
But his attempts to win compensation fell at the first legal hurdle after Edexcel argued that Mr Mead had never been 'an employee' in the legal sense of the term but had worked on a contract basis.
Tribunal chairman Christopher Ash praised the eloquence of Mr Mead, who represented himself at the hearing, but said his claim could not be considered for legal reasons. After the hearing Mr Mead said he would consider what other avenues of appeal were available before coming to any decision as to whether to pursue his claims against Edexcel.
Mr Mead had earlier said examiners' pay was so 'beggarly' that the board was forced to recruit student teachers to mark GCSE papers. He said he thought that examination board Edexcel was 'mad' to use unqualified staff to grade papers.
'Because of the beggarly pay they were forced to look outside the teaching profession for markers,' Mr Mead told the tribunal in Norwich.
'They recruited student teachers who were then trained to mark by examiners.
'These were graduates who were doing their post-graduate diploma.
'At the time we were training them they were not newly-qualified teachers.
'I thought they (Edexcel) were mad.'

thx for the information
i hope its useful but i dont think the students that im talking abt are so stupid to not know what the question asks for
even if they get 2 marks out of every question theyll score better :)

well ok let me tell u a story that i heard about edexcel from different teachers in our school
now dont take thsi story as true, i wasnt there when this happened
but i knw the guy and he approved that this is what happened
well this guy is very good in chemistry but he got low marks in the As level unit one chem
so he asked for a recheck from edexcel and payed the money
so they sent the teacher a copy of his exam and according to what he said
the exam that edexcel sent was the wrong one
so he contacted them and asked for his exam again
and he go another different exam which does not belong to him
until he got fed up and accepted his mark
thank god he did well in these exams :)
thats why our teachers are warning students NOT to make a recheck since its a waste of money :)
and thatnks for the great article By the way :D

Great to know your friend did well! :)
I would say that CIE is much better than edexcel in this respect. My Computing AS grade was upgraded from B to A alhamdulillah after I sent it for a clerical recheck. Another student's grade was also upgraded from D to B.

That was case only. You cant judge on that basis.
At least Edexcel allows you to see your paper. CIE doesn't.

CIE does. ;) Check well.

I think you guys should rethink on what ur saying. When remarking is sent, the exam is revised from another examiner, hence it is NOT A WASTE OF MONEY. Thats why most cases the mark changes slightly.

if u read what i said again
u can conclude that the guys exam is lost
and i mean for real why eould a big company like edexcel prove itself wrong infront of the world?
of course itll change a bit or even stays the same :)

Give me a link.
It was an option in the form which has to be filled up for reassessment.

i wanted to do cie. but unfortunately the British council does not provide lab facilities to do the practical paper for science subjects. thus i am left with no choice but to do edexcel which has a written alternative paper. i really hope the marking id fair and just. cause i am really depending on my results for scholarship. and it cost me a bomb to do edexcel compared to cie. any suggestions?
-
There is something wrong with Edexcel.
Last year, I didn't get my AS grades for Chemistry and Physics.
Apparantely, according to them. . . there was some clashing between my grades and some candidate from 2002. Does this even make sense?
I don't think so.
We kept contacting them for months before they handed my grades over. =/

Yes, there were.
For example,

I agree although i got an A for biology however this paper was more difficult than the june 2010 !! and the boundary for the june 2010 (as i heard - not sure) 60% was an A? :O
are they out of their minds..
