Title: The A* grade
Post by: Saladin on August 24, 2010, 11:40:46 am
Read this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11037928)!

I was never in favour of an A*, because an A is enough for academics, we have to start looking at more dimensions than one! :(

I'm in favour of it. It helps a lot here.

for me..it doesn't matter

i've just started my A2..and well ofcourse i'm aiming at that A*. but what students should really really aim at..is to understand whatever they're studying completely.
because at the end of the day, grades don't count ..nothing does..when in the future your out there facing the world-its your skills, your talents that work..how well can you EXECUTE
for eg. i fail to get a * cz of sum silly mistakes but give me a practical to do or a simple toy to work, and i apply my knowledge and work a way round the problem...what matters more..my skill or the person who's got a * and damn i couldn't???

personally, everyone should know their capabilities well and aim accordingly. Everyone's brain doesn't work the same way. talking about why i couldn't get a * or even wasting time to think about it, will only bring my confidence level down..but if i know i am capable of doing all the hard work that it'd take to get that star..well why not go for it then?
:P ;D

I think the A(a) system was better. But most universities will still accept A grades in subject though.

Me too, I like the A system better, because you need a balanced person to do something, not a complete book worm.

Does edexcel follow this A* system too?

All boards do. Edexcel, CIE, OCR, AQA, all of them.

I might be a bit daft, but before the A*, wasn't 90 and + an A? Or was it 80 and + an A? Because my cousins say it was 90 and + an A before, so in that case, they just added a little shimmer to the system, that's all.

Do. ;)

For CIE A Level, > 180% is an A*.

Do. ;)

For CIE A Level, > 180% is an A*.

Does that mean that if I get 94% overall UMS in a subject, in my AS-Level, and 88% over all UMS in a subject in my A-Level, I would score an A*?

180%, that would bring to 90%.  ;)

I think I wasn't clear...I mean, even if I do not have 90% in my A2 components, but the overall percentage is 180% and above, I win (an A*)?

Yes, you do. If you are taking the A Levels. Yes. They count all.

Ah, okay. I asked because it's different for Edexcel.

Edexcel, I don't know... Just CIE.  ;)

No problem.  :)

CIE is harder than Edexcel but this does not change grades.

Because the grades depend on curves. And, because of that the same % of Edexcel and CIE will get A*s....

CIE is harder, the subjects are tougher. But, this does not affect the actual grades.

Overall, A* is the best wherever it is and how it's not :P
