Title: UMS question (A*)
Post by: dragon_knight on May 26, 2011, 02:30:24 pm
hi guys, i would like to ask how do i calculate UMS marks?

like for example, edexcel 2011 Jan Chemistry paper5 (out of 90):
A* 72
A   65
B   58
C   51
D   44
E   38
N   32

if i get 75 raw marks, what UMS do i get? how about if i get 80 raw marks?

because i saw on student room, that "you don't need to get full marks of the raw paper marks to get full UMS" i was just curious on that.

(and that's just a random figure, i know not many ppl get that but i'll set those as my target :] )

they have a very complicated series of statastical formulas to convert raw marks to ums

hmm i think its like this not sure thaugh , just assuming !!

If the mean is lets say 57 & they might add the standed diviation into it ! , & then they might devide the raw mark by  the standerd + the mean , so this way its possible for the UMS to be above 100 ! , in exceptional cases where the candidates scores really well!
not sure @ all about this just guessing :D

awww... that means you won't know your UMS marks even u had calculated your raw marks while doing past papers? not even when the grade boundaries are issued?

anyway... thanks n +rep~

i think i know

for example , the minimum raw mark to get grade A (80% UMS) is 29 out of 40
then if u score 34, for example then

u cn get ur approx. UMS simple by cross mltipilcation that is

ur UMS = 34*80/29

i thaught we were discussing about hw we get the  80 % , when the marks are 29/40  ?? rite ?

No let me make it clear

29 in the minimum mark to get A out of 40

and 80% UMS is mimimun Percent to get A grade

there fore,   80% = 29
now u get 34 marks the
UMS for 34 would be = 34*80/29

yea thats looks allrite , but how do they say that  29/40 gives the 80% , thats my question :)

Dasith, yes thats true....29/40 does NOT give 80%....but Edexcel scale all the marks and fixa mark of 29/40 as the minimum to get 80% and hence get an A....this is basically to help improve our marks and make it comparable to previous papers.....good for us!!  ;)

By the way....MY REP POWER IS 90 AND SO ARE MY POSTS!! ;D

but it varies i think , specially in CIE , GCE -A/L
i dont knw about edexcel thaugh ! ,& i thaught we were discussing , how that variation occurs  ???

29 out of 40 is just one exampleee

i solved a paper (40mark) and scored 30 and in the grading technique the mimnum marks to gain A grade was 29

i used the above method to calculate my rough UMS

You get A in that component. Add UMS of other and calculate for your subject.
