Hello!
Can some one explain how expert systems work (like how to create one etc)? Thanks!
Title: Re: ICT (0481) help HERE only!
Post by: zara on May 19, 2009, 04:28:39 am
how an expert system is created?
>Users are interviewed for their requirements
>Data is collected from the experts
>Knowledge base is designed
>Rule base is designed
>Inference engine is designed
>Input screens and output formats are designed
>Testing of the system is done by sample inputs

hoe does it work?
>The input data is compared with the knowledge database
>It(the system) will ask for more questions if required
>It will come to some conclusion.

Q1 Are you guys studying for CIE ICT 0418 ? if yes, how ?

Q2 Are you doing past papers ? If yes, which ones ?

Q3 Do you have good revision notes/ resources to study ? If yes could you please post in this current thread ?

Q4 Is it sufficent to JUST do last 5 session papers to get an A* ? ( I believe i did well in Paper 2 and 3 )

Q5 Do you think May 2009 paper will have the same difficulty level like the last few years papers ( 2006 - 2008 ) ?

Please include any GOOD links and files which will be helpful

Thanks in Advance !

Good Luck And May ALLAH bless you all !

wat r hubs ,switches and routers??
i was jus studin dat
hubs are simple ways to connect multiple devices in the form of a single network
switches are advanced forms of hubs and are much faster
routers are used for tracking

So what are hubs, switches and routers?
Its coming in the exam and my teacher never explained it. Just gave us notes.

Hubs broadcast all data packets on the network to every other device on the network whereas, Switches are capable of inspecting data packets as they are received, determining the source and destination device of that packet, and forwarding it appropriately, by delivering each message only to the connected device it was intended for.
Hubs can cause lot of traffic on the network and can lead to poor network response times whereas, a Switch knows exactly which port to send the data to.
A Switch generally contains more "intelligence" and a slightly higher price tag than a Hub.

It's for these reasons why a Switch is considered to be a much better choice than a Hub.

This is very imp. to study as it has got differences between hubs and switches !!!!!!!!! ::)

Serial access is a method of accessing data records. In order to access a data record in a serial access file, it is necessary to start at the beginning of the file and read all the preceding records. The records are not stored in any particular order.

Direct access is the fastest method of accessing records in a file. The computer can store or retreive the records without the need to read other records first. Direct access is used with magnetic disks but not with magnetic tape, which use serial access.

A hub is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN.

The typical use of a hub is at the centre of a star network (or as part of a hybrid network) - the hub has cables plugged into it from each computer.
A hub is a ‘dumb’ device: if it receives a message, it sends it to every computer on the network. This means that hub-based networks are not very secure - everyone can listen in to communications.

--------

Router
A router is a network device that connects together two or more networks.

A common use of a router is to join a home or business network (LAN) to the Internet (WAN).

The router will typically have the Internet cable plugged into it, as well as a cable, or cables to computers on the LAN.
--------------
Implementing the system
Implementation is the next stage of developing a new system, after design. This is where the new system is installed, including:
•   writing programs          purchasing hardware and software
•   writing user documentation       testing the system using the test plan
•   installing networks          training staff
If the tests are not satisfactory then any problems will need to be corrected and the system tested again.  User documentation will be written to help staff become familiar with the new system. It will include:
•   a user guide             installation details
•   input and output samples                    screen shots
•   error messages (troubleshooting)
When the system is ready to go on-line there are different ways of changing to the new system:
•   Parallel running - running both the old and new system until you are certain the new system is working correctly. Parallel running is likely to be the most expensive as it involves doing the work twice for a period of time. However, it is the safest. If there are any bugs in the new system, you can always go back to the old system while the problems are corrected.
•   Pilot changeover - changing over in a small part of the company to start with. Only when the system is deemed satisfactory will it be rolled out to the rest of the organisation. A supermarket introducing a new 'self-scanning' system might choose to introduce it in two or three stores at first. This is a pilot changeover.
•   Direct changeover - the old system is scrapped and immediately replaced by the new system. With this option there is a danger that there may still be problems with the new system. Even though it is the most risky type of changeover, many companies use this method.

Phased Implementation is like only a PART of the SYSTEM is being changed, bit by bit

but in Pilot Changeover, the whole system is being implemented in only a PART of the company or branch.

Router>>It's hardware and software are tailored to the tasks of routing and forwarding the information.
It contains an operating system, RAM, flash memory and one or more processors.
It identifies the destination of the messages and send them via an appropriate route.
Hub>>It is a device for connecting each computer or terminal on a network and make them work as a single network segment. It does not manage any traffic that comes through them. Any data packets entering is broadcast out on any other part. Thus pasket collision results which slows down the smooth flow of the traffic.
Implementation>>It is the act of starting to use the computerised system in real situations after having designed and completed it.

What is the difference between Phased Change over and Pilot changeover?
the main differences
pilot is when a small part of the system is tried out on trial bases and if successful is implemented
phased is when an old system is changed into the new system in steps
hope this helps
if u need more explanation tell me

Title: Re: ICT/Computer Studies/IT help HERE only!

OK... batch processing is when all the data is collected togther before processing starts, and then input and processd at the same time.

Real time processing is when data is input and processed as it happens in real life or real time.

ok, batch is like for example, electricity bills, u collect EVERYONE's for over the whole month, and then input at the end of the month and process and send out.

but like, airline tickets, when someone makes a booking, the updating is done right away and the seat has been  'reserved' as soon as it is booked, in real time or as it happened.

hope that cleared it?

BAtch is like:Producing electricity bills,  Producing monthly payrolls.

A switch, like a hub, is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN.

The typical use of a switch is at the centre of a star network (or as part of a hybrid network) - the switch has cables plugged into it from each computer.

A switch is a more ‘intelligent’ device than a hub: if it receives a message, it checks who it is addressed to, and only sends it to that specific computer. Because of this, networks that use switches are more secure than those that use hubs, but also a little more expensive.

@sgvaibhav
im sure about the line thingy cz my teacher told me bout it..
As for the switches>>
It is a hardware device that joins multiple computers with one LAN. It identifies data packets as they are recieved determining the source and destination devices and forwarding them appropriately. Thus, it conserves networks bandwidth and has better performance than a hub.

An online system is one in which info is available to all users at their own computers in teh network. All the info is stored on the central computer called a server. Example: Electronic Point of Sale

airline is real time processing...this is bcz in real time the input, process and output are carried quickly enough to influence or control the source of the input data.(airline booking system affects worldwide)
Patient readings in ICU uses online processing(it does not affect worldwide)......It allows a computer device to be under the immediate control of the main computer.

This is the difference between online and real time processing.
this is what our teacher said about real time and online processing...

Advantages of using them instead of humans is that we dont pay them, they stand conditions humans cannot, they are accurate and faster to use and they dont become lazy like human beings =\

you don't need to know about robots in particular. you need to know about A.I (artificial intelligence) and that it is an expert system.

can i have more detailed or technical and the way data is handled in both of the real processing and online processing?

and it would really be great if i have like 2 applications or uses and examples for each of the both processing?

Thanks

OK
User documentation is written for the help of the users of the new system, for example how to install, load etc

Technical documentation is wrriten for the people or technicians who will be editing or making changes to the system in the future, and contains screenshots, validation routines used, data used for verification, etc!

Encyption is when a person codes the data in a way that cannot be understood by anyone else, for example  using special numbers, etc and it can only be de encrypted using a special software by someone who understands the data only i.e the intended authorized user.

In technical terms it is a computer program that contains the knowledge and analytical skills of one or more system, related to specific subject.

This was developed by researchers  in artificial intelligence in 1960s and 1970s and commercially in 1980s.
Artificial Intelligence is the study of a system that perceives its environment and takes actions which maximizes its chances of success.

It usually works asking serial number of questions to the end-user and some of the for itself
Example: A system is developed for making a Coffee.
It will ask several amount of questions
Like- Did the costumer entered the money or not? (itself)
What amount of sugar?
What amount of milk?
Do you want black coffee or the normal one?
Is the cup placed on the right position? (itself)
Is the cup filled to its maximum level? (itself)
Did the person take the cup or not? (itself)
And will repeat the same procedure for others.
-------------------------------------
Provides consistent answers for repetitive decisions, processes and tasks
Holds and maintains significant levels of information
Encourages organizations to clarify the logic of their decision-making
Never "forgets" to ask a question, as a human might
-----------------------------------------------
hope it helped u

Expert Systems are programs that mimic the intelligence of a human expert in a specific field of knowledge or experience.

They are often used when experts are not easily available, or are too expensive, e.g. to give medical advice.

This works by using a database of stored information on computer about medical conditions. An expert gives the computer a set of rules to use when making a diagnosis.

ICT is probably one of the more easier A*'s out there, seeing how we did the practicals with ease. that was 60% overall. Tomorrow is a 40%. If we score 3/4 of it right,Woohoo!xD
so goodluck to all. and hopefully the paper wont be hard!:)

Expert systems usually have the following features:
Knowledge base: containing all facts and rules concerning the topic of study

Inference Engine: This is a program which gradually works towards a solution of the user's problem using the experts knowledge and user replies.

User interface: Enabling the user to communicate effectively with the computer systemm, using the appropriate terminology and question styles

The following steps are requires to create an expert system:

Application which involve the use of expert systems:

hey people wat is the definition of a hybrid topology?
Title: Re: ICT/Computer Studies/IT help HERE only!
Post by: angell on May 19, 2009, 10:08:35 pm
A hybrid network is simply one that combines two or more of the above basic topologies.

E.g. A network that has several star networks linked together is a hybrid network

i attached a document in one of the previous posts - regarding hybrid topologies

check the previous pages:)

Hope that helped! Best of luck!

wat r switches ??
Title: Re: ICT/Computer Studies/IT help HERE only!
Post by: ***-))((-S.U.B-))((-*** on May 19, 2009, 10:12:47 pm
Hybrid networks use a combination of any two or more topologies in such a way that the resulting network does not exhibit one of the standard topologies (e.g., bus, star, ring, etc.). For example, a tree network connected to a tree network is still a tree network, but two star networks connected together exhibit a hybrid network topology. A hybrid topology is always produced when two different basic network topologies are connected. Two common examples for Hybrid network are: star ring network and star bus network

    * A Star ring network consists of two or more star topologies connected using a multistation access unit (MAU) as a centralized hub.
    * A Star Bus network consists of two or more star topologies connected using a bus trunk (the bus trunk serves as the network's backbone).

While grid networks have found popularity in high-performance computing applications, some systems have used genetic algorithms to design custom networks that have the fewest possible hops in between different nodes. Some of the resulting layouts are nearly incomprehensible, although they function quite well.

Hope you didn't understand  ;D ;D ;D ;D

But don't worry read it 3 - 4 times n you'll for sure understand it!!! ;) ;) ;)

n BEST OF LUCK!! every one for tomorrow ..... :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
Title: Re: ICT/Computer Studies/IT help HERE only!
Post by: angell on May 19, 2009, 10:14:19 pm
A switch, like a hub, is a device that connects a number of computers together to make a LAN.

The typical use of a switch is at the centre of a star network (or as part of a hybrid network) - the switch has cables plugged into it from each computer.

A switch is a more ‘intelligent’ device than a hub: if it receives a message, it checks who it is addressed to, and only sends it to that specific computer. Because of this, networks that use switches are more secure than those that use hubs, but also a little more expensive.

eg; printer server
inertnet server

A proxy server is a computer setup to share a resource, usually an Internet connection.

Other computers can request a web page via the proxy server. The proxy server will then get the page using its Internet connection, and pass it back to the computer who asked for it.

Proxy servers are often used instead of router since additional software can be easily installed on the computer such as anti-virus, web filtering etc.

Illegally copying software is often referred to as software piracy.

If you make a copy of a game for a friend, get the latest version of Windows from a dodgy shop, or ‘borrow’ some software from work, you are probably breaking the law.

When someone creates an original piece of software, that person then holds something called the copyright for that software. (This is also true when people create books, films and songs.)

Holding the copyright for software means that you have the protection of the law if anyone tries to steal your software.

Under copyright law, people must not:
•   Copy the software for other people
•   Lend the software to other people
•   Rent the software to other people
•   Install the software on a network when other users can access it (unless it is a special ‘network’ version)
If someone breaks the copyright, they can be punished by fines or even by imprisonment.

The reason for this is that creating software can involve the work of many people and may take thousands of hours. It is only fair that all of this effort is protected

airline is real time processing...this is bcz in real time the input, process and output are carried quickly enough to influence or control the source of the input data.(airline booking system affects worldwide)
Patient readings in ICU uses online processing(it does not affect worldwide)......It allows a computer device to be under the immediate control of the main computer.

This is the difference between online and real time processing.
this is what our teacher said about real time and online processing...

i think that these both are swapped
online is booking
real time is the ICU thingy
im not sure, but just checlk

how an expert system is created?
>Users are interviewed for their requirements
>Data is collected from the experts
>Knowledge base is designed
>Rule base is designed
>Inference engine is designed
>Input screens and output formats are designed
>Testing of the system is done by sample inputs

hoe does it work?
>The input data is compared with the knowledge database
>It(the system) will ask for more questions if required
>It will come to some conclusion.

For more information: www.igcseict.info

u 4gt 2 mention that according 2 da rule base da answer is given  :)

A3.i hav my skool notes in my ntbk...as said by zara b4 go to tht website...its really good
A4.i hav no idea
A5.yup...bcuz of da new sylabus

try doing the pastpapers from freeexampapers.com

about hubs, Bridge, Gateway, switches and routers

Gateway: It connects networks of difrnt kinds.eg connecting a network of PCs to a mainframe computer.

Bridge: It connects networks of the same type but in different topologies.like ur skool computers different computer labs (LAN networks) are connected together maybe 1 is a star and da other is a ring topology

Router: It connects several networks. It is smart enough 2 pick da right path of communications traffic, If there is a partial failure of the network, a router looks for an alternate route.

Hubs: Connect the stations in the LAN working by broadcasting ie radio signals

Switch: It is like a hub but its more intelligent 2 no the IP addresses.

I hope that this helped.. :)

look batch processing is wen data is collected in ""batches"" then processied all in one go when there is no1 working on da computers like in payroll systems

realtime processing is wen small errors arent accepted and may cause a lot of damage like in car manufacturing .. robot arms cannot put the nail in another place as a slight delay will ruin da car shape

online processing is wen there is a slight delay while da data entered is being prcessed like in cinema booking systems....there might b a slight delay as da order would b checked wid other ""booking windows"" to ensure that a seat isnt booked twice

i hope that this helped :)

umm is it really true tht real time affects world wide and like online proceesing doesnt. cuz tht just doesnt make any sense. i mean so what happens if u use real time in ICU in hospitals?

can i have more detailed or technical and the way data is handled in both of the real processing and online processing?

and it would really be great if i have like 2 applications or uses and examples for each of the both processing?

Thanks

It is used in ICUs in hospitals becoz if there is a second delay da patient may die so it wont take tym as sonn as anythng is detected watever action has 2 b taken is taken bt imagine if it was onlyn processing....it will frst read it then detected and there may b a slight delay which may cause a apatient 2 die!!!!!

Systems Analysis is, as the name states, the analysis of systems!

The systems that we are talking about are the systems within organisations and businesses - systems of communication, financial systems, manufacturing systems, etc. - basically the systems that make the organisation or business work.

A person who analyses systems is known as a Systems Analyst.

Often systems analysts are employed by organisations of businesses to help them improve their systems and so become more efficient, and for businesses, more profitable.

A systems analyst would generally perform the following steps in the order shown...

Research
Collecting information about the present system works

Analysis
Examining out how the present system works and identifying problems with it

Design
Coming up with a new system that will fix the present systems problems

Production
Creating the new system from the design

Testing
Checking if the newly created system works as expected

Documentation
Creating documents that describe how to use the new systems, and how it works

Implementation
Replacing the present system with the new system

Evaluation
Checking that the new system meets all expectations

A HUB is a device which recieves data from one computer in a network and sends it out to all other computers in the network. It is often not used as it decreases the speed of transmission and increase data collision

A Router is a device similar to HUB but it only sends data to the computer its adressed to, therefore decrease data collision and increase speed of transmission

A Bridge is used to seperate 2 networks therefore increase speed of transmisson and decrease data collision

A Switch is a combination of a HUB, Bridge and Repeater

A Repeater gives boost to data to travel further in a network

A modem converts Analogue data to Digital data and Vice-Versa

Batch Processing
for eg-

In a bank, all the data is collected during the day and is processed at once during the night and the accounts are updated the next morning.

In online processing:

the data is collected and is processed at the same time and the account is updated instantly.

Real time processing I too dunno  EHEHEHHEHEHEEHH  :D :D :D :D :D :D

I dont understand batch, realtime and online processing at all!
Batch Processing - Collecting all the source documents and processing them in a batch.

Examples: Payrolls, Utility bills

On-line Processing - Involves the use of a central system or computer to update the information as soon as it originates.

Examples: Airline booking, cinema and theater booking

Real-time processing - Involves a control system which uses a sensor requiring immediate access

Examples: Hospital patients monitoring, rocket fired into space, burglar systems.

wasn't airline booking real time. i mean i saw it in mark schemes.

and for booking a seat in cinema while purchasing tickets. what type of process is tht?

and from what i understand

batch processing: its where an organisation waits for all inputs to come in and then process them all in once together at a certain date.

eg: 1)like when u get electricity bills every month after all the meter readings (inputs) is collected by the electricty company.
2)a monthly paid employee gets his payroll done after a month and then gets payment.

transaction processing: it is same like batch processing except u dont have to wait for a certain period of time to collect all inputs. u can just process any data any time.

eg: when a monthly paid employee leaves in the middle of the month. so the company does not have to wait till the end of the month for the payroll to be done. the company can just do it rightaway and pay tht certain employee.

real time processing: its like every thing is happening NOW any change made it will show in the screen that change was made. here there is no waiting. this process responds directly to an enquiry. any problem and VOOOM it will try to solve it DIRECTLY.

eg: when u book seats for in a plane and when u choose a seat it will show on the screen tht it is occupied by u.
suppose another dude attends and says tht he wants the same seat U already booked for. the clerk working there says "oh, sorry sir, this seat was already taken" how does tht happen?,this happens cuz this shows on the screen tht seat  is alraedy taken by u  directly after u booked and took a seat. this is done by real time processing. THE CURRENT SITUATION IS ALWAYS SHOWN.

online processing: now this iam confused with real time processing. i feel tht it needs to be connected to the internet (online) then it carries out process.

so therefore i would like to have a great explaination on online process and its examples. ;D

hey eamyy

the inputs would be all the symptoms of the sick guy.
it would also be what age or what is the problems of teh sick guy.
then what did he ate or what did he do previously.

an expert system is a system tht acts like an expert. it would feel as if the doctor is infront of you.
the systems ask questions and then later gathers all the answers and comes to a conclusion (which is the sickness of teh sick guy and what medication he must take)

so here the answers are the inputs which are like :

1)the inputs would be all the symptoms of the sick guy.
2)it would also be what age or what is the problems of teh sick guy.
3)then what did he ate or what did he do previously

then simply describe them

Oh and the Steps in creating the expert system are:
- Expert doctors are interviewed by Knowledg eexperts

- Knowledge base is created
- Inference engine is designed
- Interface in the form of output screens and output reports are created

An expert system is a human-created system that has artificial intelligence, its designed to replace the human experts in areas where human experts wont b able to reach or maybe they r tooo expensive to hire.

information is collected 4rm da experts then a knowledge base and a rule base is created and designed then the inference engine is created and designed.after that the input and output formats are created and designed.then the system is tested.

in a case of a clinic>>surgery in their terms<<
the symptoms of the patient and other necessary information is entered into the interactive user screen(input) and according to the knowledge base(proccessing) and the rule base, the disease is said and the suitable diagnosis is suggested (output)

expert systems can also be used in the identification of animals>>ie mammals, reptiles,crustaceans....<<

no its mentioned lsn by common sense the data is colllected from da scientists and then aknowledge base and a rule base is created and designed then the inference engine....blablablaa

then thius is da input proceess output
information and hw da animal appears is inputted<<has scales, hair antenna...>>
(input)then the entered data is compared wid the experts information in da knowledge base and rule base(processing) and according to that suggestions are made(output)

right?
