alkenes reacting with kmn04
« on: March 13, 2010, 02:27:10 pm »
could someone please explain to me the reactions of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkenes with kmno4, in like simple terms. with the products. this is wat i know primary give carbon dioxide, secondary gives acid, tertiary gives ketone, but then my teacher also said that if u consider the double bond to be broken then a primary gives acid, secondary gives ketone, and tertiary doesnt react. if u didnt get wat i mean the just ignore and plz simply tell me the reactions, Thanks

this is in very SIMPLE terms....hope it makes sense
we have lets say

C2H4 now the double bond is  broken as it is oxidised(loss of electrons).....so wat do we have two Carbon Intermediates of CH2....which is not bonded to any other C..Now its simple this one will form CO2........

However if we have propene C3H6 then we have C2H4 and CH2 intermediates.........now this is IMPORTANT since in C2H4  the C is bonded with another C it is primary and will thus form aldehyde or when fully oxidised carboxylic acid........same thing u apply with a secondary......

got it
