For example Potassium(alkali metal) has 1 valence electron in it's outer shell. It requires to 8 electrons to attain noble gas electronic configuration. So it loses the outermost electron and forms an ion with a +1 charge.(cation)
Chlorine(halogen) has 7 valence electrons, it requires one electron to attain noble gas electronic configuration..It gains an electron to form an ion with -1 charge.(anion)
opposite charges on the ions attract, and an ionic bond is formed
Hope this helps
