x^2 + 6x = 9 - (x-3)^2
therefore a = 9
b = 3

the general rule
x2 + nx = (x + n/2)2 - (n/2)2
n = 6
therefore n/2 = 3
here its -x2 + 6x = (x-3)2 - (3)2 = -x2 + 6x = 9 - (x-3)2

Should be (x+3)2-9
