mana, for part ii), the readings that would need to be taken are: First, record the background radiation (without the source and absorber), then record the radiation count with the source (using the detector) and lastly, record the radiaiton count with source and absorber (using the detector).

P.S Did anyone try drawing for Q7a), May/June 2008, paper 3???
